Intro

So...I'm TROLLing1999 and this my 5th guide here on Moba, presenting one more adc, this time Lucian, The Purifier.

I won't lie to you, Lucian is not even close to the top tier of adcs, he's really skill cap and he has several weaknesses that might be proved vital regarding the how well you scale into lategame. So you'd better not even touch him if you're new to adcs or the game since he requires some knowledge to be played at full potential.

And that's exactly where I come, this guide is here to help to kick ***es with one of the most so-called "weak" champs and make your enemies look at you like "WHAT?".

Because Lucian is Underrated.

Masteries

The usual marksman 21/9/0 tree getting all physical attacks bonuses in offense. In the defense tree you can even put some points in Resistance insted of Hardiness if you face llanes with a lot of magic damage like Zyra+ Corki. Never forget Summoner's Resolve ,which gives nice a bonus to Cleanse or Barrier.

Runes

Greater Mark of Attack Damage(9): AD for AA and your abilities, which means easier last hits and better trading potential.
Greater Seal of Armor(9): Armor is always great vs adcs as well as vs AD-oriented junglers.
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist(9): Most support deal completely magic damage so to reduce the incoming poke get flat MR.
Greater Quintessence of Life Steal(2): Guarantees you sustain on hit. It accompannies well with Doran's Blade.
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage(1): Even more AD, mainly for easier last hits under turret.

Summoner Spells

FLASH...
Although, Lucian has some mobility, he still lacks the sure escaping mechanism, so Flash is absolutely neccessary.
invisible text
...AND BARRIER

Introduced in S3 , Barrier is a great spell for every adc.It can absorb tons of damage, surprise the enemy and it's not countered by healing reduction effects. It can be used defensively or in order to join a fight stronger.
invisible text
...OR CLEANSE

Great vs high CC team/lanes. Note that you can always get a Quicksilver Sash

Abilities

Your passive...it brings a lot of burst and it is a reason not to build much AS. It can help you take down turrets, last hit and of course trade. The first attack procs Sheen's passive and the second works with crit.

This ability is your main damage source apart from AA. Early game it can be used to harass enemies from a safe distance, while the fact that it deals AoE damage makes it great for wave clearing. Note that it might be hard to lean how to use the skill at first place.

Your second best normal ability in terms of damage output. It deals magic damage and it has great AP and AD ratios. You can abuse the long range of it to harass, use the AoE to waveclear or take advantage of the bonus MS to chase or escape.
Spoiler: Click to view

This is your ultility spell. It works like Cleanse and Flash in one. However, it is not always a safe escaping method. You can use it during The Culling without interupting the ultimate.

Your ulti might be hard to use and indeed it might not be as strong as other ultimate abilities. However, if used at the right time it's vital. For more info on this check the spoiler below. Remember that you are able to move while using The Culling.
USING THE CULLING

Skill sequence

As I mentioned above, Piercing Light is your primary damage source, so you maxt firsr. Then you maximize Ardent Blaze because it deals considerable damage. Relentless Pursuit is used only as an ultility spell, so don't max it before level 18. Get The Culling, whenever possible.

Items

Item Sequence

Boots 300
Vampiric Scepter 900
B. F. Sword 1300
Berserker's Greaves 1100
Bloodthirster 3400
Trinity Force 3333
Last Whisper 1450
Banshee's Veil 3100
Infinity Edge 3300
Enchantment: Furor 450
Elixir of Fortitude 350
Elixir of Brilliance 250

Start with Doran's Blade, unless you don't have lifesteal quints to guarantee you sustain. In this case go for Boots and 3 Health Potions. In your first back, you shall buy tier 1 boots and Vampiric Scepter for more trading potential and durability in lane. Then rush B. F. Sword asap. If you have fallen behind though a second Doran's Blade will help you catch up in damage and lifesteal and will allow you to be competetive in trades. Afterwards upgrade your boots into Berserker's Greaves. Getting Bloodthirster is your first priority because of the large AD and Lifesteal pool it has, especially if fully farmed. Then rush Trinity Force. Since you're a caster-like adc the bonus damage from Sheen's passive and the all around stats from Trinity Force will be more beneficial for you than Phantom Dancer or Statikk Shiv would be. Then go for Last Whisper to counter the armor your enemies must be building. Now you probably, need some defense. Choose from these four according to the situation: After that buy Infinity Edge for maximum damage output and upgrade your boots into tier 3 ones. Get Enchantment: Homeguard only if you need to defend very often. Don't forget elixirs!

Item Sequence

Boots 300
Vampiric Scepter 900
B. F. Sword 1300
Berserker's Greaves 1100
Bloodthirster 3400
Statikk Shiv 2900
Last Whisper 1450
Banshee's Veil 3100
Infinity Edge 3300
Enchantment: Furor 450
Elixir of Fortitude 350
Elixir of Brilliance 250

This build is the same with the one above just with one difference. Instead of Trinity Force you rush Statikk Shiv. This means you have less burst damage but much better waveclearing power. So use this build when you have the opportunity to split-push. Late game you might sell Statikk Shiv for Trinity Force in order to deal more damage, but this situation will not happen very often.

Tactical Play

Laning

Lucian is preety strong during laning phase and he is able to win many trades in lane. This doesn't mean though that you should play 100% as a lane bully. In the very beginning, you maybe want to push the lane for a superquick level 2. Then you can abuse the level advantage in order to zone your enemy. This will be achieved due to poking either due to abilities or with AA, especially if the enemy adc is about to last hit a minion. In the meanwhile, you must have stopeed pushing and focus on last hitting, which means waiting until the minion is at an hp level where you can make the killing blow only. This way you will not push your lane and you will avoid being ganked easily. Generally, you must keep up poking and farming until level 6. There you can force a 2vs2 trade and use your ultimate combo which is:
  • Piercing Light
  • Auto attack, which will proc passive
  • Ardent Blaze
  • Auto attack, which will proc passive and grant you movement speed
  • The Culling
  • You can use Relentless Pursuit to stay in range or to reposition your self, while your ultimate is on. If they have a slowing ability wait until they use it one you and then use your E to remove it.

Mid&Late-Game

During mid-game your priorities are turrets and dragon. If you choose the Statikk Shiv path you'd better stay bot and split push the lane. This way you can secure a lare amount of gold for you and your teammates and gain map control. Major thing when splitpushing is not getting caught, which means that warding is essential. If you got the Trinity Force path you should join your team and focus on getting the turrets at middle lane. This will often be done due to early teamfights. Don't forget to kite whenever possible, which means attacking the enemy and getting back to safety. This can be done due to the following combo:

Teamfights

In teamfights your main priority is to stay alive. As adc you probably deal the most damage of the team so if die the teamfight will be lost for your team. Stay behind your team and wait for your tank/ offtank to initiate or in the worst case to get initiated. There really is no need to take down the enemy marksman. This is the job of the assasin/anti-carry. You should attack the closest enemy always prioritizing the squishiest of the ones that are in your range. The AoE damage from Piercing Light and Ardent Blaze is vital so make sure you land the correctly. Use Relentless Pursuit as a disengage ability if something goes wrong. Only use it to get closer if you are really not in danger. The Culling can either be activated at the very beginning to deal some damage from a very safe distance or in the end to take down fleeing enemies. It is useless during the actual teamfight cuz a tank can easily go in the range and absorb the damage plus that it does not allow you to reposition yourself.

Synergies

So Lucian cooperates well with supports that can keep the target in one place (thanks to CC), so that he can land his combo. Some examples are:

  • Leona- Probably the best killing support atm... Leona has 2 stuns and she can bring much damage to the table, while she is tanky as well. I feel she is underrated in the current meta. Note that this is an all in lane since Leona has nothing more than good trading potential.
  • Zyra- Zyra has both nice poke and CC. These make her good safe pick for Lucian. In this lane you can either go for all in trades especially after level 6 or you can focus on poking.
  • Nami- Nami is among with Zyra the best support pick for Lucian in my opinion. She has good harass mechanisms, she is ok at trades and she provides you wiith mobility as well.
  • Thresh- Thresh is one more good pick. He might not have good harass but he if he lands a hook you can easily burst down the enemy. In addition to this your ulti does not interrupti if you use his lantern.
  • Lulu- Lulu is similar to Nami or Zyra. A safe pick with extremely good poke and ok trading potential that can help you zone an enemy and guarantees your safety due to CC and multiple bonus.

As for other supports I'd like to mention Taric and Soraka who are probably the best choices if you're in a hard matchup or in your very first steps as Lucian. Soraka mainly because of the multiple heals and the mana restore which will allow you to spamm non-stop your abilities and Taric due to his combination of good killing potential and babysitter thanks to the armor auro and the heal.

Conclusion

So that was the guide so far. I hope it was informative enough and it helped you discover some of the strenghts of Lucian.
