Ryze (TOP) guide to climb the ladder... Maybe...

By Pescepallace
PRO/CONS
Pro:
- One of the most fun champ of the game.
- Very good wawe clear.
- One of the most adattable champ of the game.
- Insane damage output if used well.
- Possibility to be tank without giving up the offensive power.
- Unstoppable in late game.
- It's a little blue man.

Cons:
- Pretty weak early game.
- Hard to master.
- The only escape ability is the speed taked by Phase Rush + combos.
- To get the real wizard hat you have to buy the skin.
Abilities

Ok, let's look at the abilities one by one and how to be a great little blue man.

Ryze's spells deal extra damage based on his bonus mana, and his maximum mana is increased by 5% per 100 ability power.

I love this ability of Ryze.
Our little man blue, uses a lot of mana, and increasing our mana-pool we also get damage, increasing the AP, we increase the mana ... wow!
All this allows you to build objects like Frozen Heart or Abyssal Mask without losing offensive capacity.

Passive: Ryze's other basic abilities reset Overload's cooldown and generate a Rune for 4 seconds, up to a maximum of 2.
Active: Ryze unleashes a runic blast in the target direction, dealing 60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160 / 185 (+45% of ability power) (+3% of bonus mana) magic damage to the first enemy struck and consuming all of his Runes.
If Ryze consumes 2 Runes, he shields himself from up to 65-150 (60 +5 per level) (+60% of ability power) (+3% of bonus mana) damage for 2 seconds and gains 25 / 28 / 31 / 34 / 37 / 40% bonus movement speed for the duration.
Flux: Overload deals 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80% bonus damage based on Spell Flux's rank and spreads to all nearby enemies marked with Flux, consuming the mark on all targets.

The main damage ability of the blue man, the cooldown is reset with all our other abilities, this allows for various different combos to get different effects.
Overload deals a lot of bonus damage if it hits an enemy with the Mana flux mark.
Consuming runes you get one of Ryze's strongest passives, a shield and movement speed bonus.
So, in addition to doing damage, this ability can be used to escape from bad situations.

Ryze instantly deals 80 / 100 / 120 / 140 / 160 (+60% of ability power) (+1% bonus mana) magic damage and roots the target enemy for 0.75 seconds.
Flux: Rune Prison's root duration is doubled to 1.5 seconds.

This is the only CC of our little blue man, used on Spell Flux to extend the duration. With Overload combos, this ability can help you survive and escape from bad situation.

Ryze hurls an orb of runic energy at the target enemy, dealing 70 / 90 / 110 / 130 / 150 (+30% of ability power) (+2% bonus mana) magic damage and marking them with Flux for 3 seconds, causing his next basic ability against them to consume the mark and gain bonus effects.
Flux: Spell Flux spreads to all nearby enemies, applying 50% of its damage and marking them with Flux.
Enemies killed by Spell Flux or while marked with Flux also trigger its bonus effect.

Useful ability for farm and to boost Overload damage.
Spell Flux is the Ryze base for combos, used before other spells, so you can change their effects (empowered damage, extend root duration, spread the mark).

Ryze opens a portal to a nearby location. After 2 seconds, all allied units within the portal's sphere are warped to the target location.
If Ryze becomes unable to cast or move, Realm Warp is cancelled.

One of the most useful ability in the game, with a good macro-game, this spell allows you to to create good spot to take advantage as a team (Steal objectives, escape from bad situations, team ganks etc etc...).
Runes

Now let's talk about the primary runes. Sorcery for me is the best choice for Ryze.

No way to use this... Flying cat...
To deal more damage this rune is great for Ryze, with Rune Prison + Cheap Shot + Arcane Comet, you can deal a stupid amount of damage in early game.
My fovourite rune on Ryze. The speed of Phase Rush + Overload, can help you in most situation, chase, escape and give you a outplay potential.

Mini Hexdrinker at a 60s cooldown is a great choice against a strong APC ( Viktor, Karthus as for the 8.24 Patch).
Ryze is very mana hungry, this rune can help you for the early/mid-game.
I dont like this on Ryze, Manaflow Band is better... and essential.

CDR is one of the best choise on Ryze. With this rune, the exceedin CDR become AP, so, take this.
After the change, this rune has lost efficiency on Ryze, to be taken only if we want to improve Phase Rush + Overload.
No bad rune, but i prefer the CDR of Transcendence.

Damage added to the Rune Prison + Cheap Shot + Arcane Comet combo, no bad in easy match-up, can help you to snowball in early game.
Generally i dont take this, it's too situational for Ryze.
Ryze scaling better, this rune help in that. Free AP gained with time, after the Scorch nerf, this rune is better for damage.

Now let's see the secondary runes.

Inspiration it's great in some cases, mainly when you need to buy items as fast as possible.

Being able to buy items earlier than normal can make the difference between winning or losing Lane, especially in hards match-ups.
Save 300 gold? Yes thanks. Receiving the Slightly Magical Boots at 10 minutes (or less if you get kill / assist), allows you to concentrate on buying other useful items for laning-phase.
In games where you think you have to buy Zhonya's Hourglass, taking this rune saves 600 gold and has a Stopwatch to 10 minutes. Very useful if you are against anyone who has a burst damage.

Take Resolve against hard match-up, or everytime you need more defense.

Is a must against a poking-lane, Second Wind + Doran's Shield, heals you a lot every time you get damaged by enemys.
Giving you the chance to stay in Lane longer and eventually win trade against the enemy.
One of the best runes of Resolve. Mitigate damage during the laning-phase, it gives you advantage over your opponent in early trades.
Free Hp's? Why not? Seriously ... do you need an explanation?
It might be useful, but I prefer the Overgrowth HP's bonus. I teke this only vs enemys with a tons of CCs.

Domination, it's the best choice for Ryze in most cases, it offers sustain that makes you a monster in 1v1 or 1v2.

With the ability to spam spells of Ryze, this rune has a very strong sustain. It makes you extremely oppressive in 1v1 fights, especially used with Ravenous Hunter.
As explained in the Taste of Blood paragraph, sustain is very strong on Ryze.
Laning phase/Team fight

Laning phase

The Ryze TOP laning phase is based on farming and scaling.
Harass is very important, especially in TOP, where most champions are melee, so use AAs on enemies whenever you can.
Attention during the early stages of the game because our blue friend, devours the mana, at the first levels try to use only Spell Flux as a poke, and eventually the fast combo E + Q. Remember that your only escape ability, is the spell combo that consumes a lot of mana, so be careful to always keep some resources for a possible gank of the enemy jungler.
Once you have purchased Tear of the Goddess, you can have more fun, constantly harassing your opponent, which also helps to transform it.
Once you have bought Tear of the Goddess + Catalyst of Aeons, you can win almost all 1v1 trades and even try to kill your opponent.
Ryze, with the first 2 items, can push strongly, which allows you to roming. Realm Warp is great for setting up a gank, so DO IT! Use Ryze's kit to help your team, but remember not to waste precious time and farm, proper roming takes time and patience to be learned.

Team fight

Ryze in team fight, requires a lot of time to be used well.
Positioning is essential, all damage is based on repeatedly hitting the same target, which is not easy the first few times. Try to position yourself behind a tank or someone with CCs, take advantage of the opportunities given by your team to do damage to priority targets and make picks from unexpected positions thanks to Realm Warp.
Stay close to your team and take advantage of the mobility offered by Realm Warp to engage / disengage, chase or reposition all your allies.
If the situation allows, Ryze is a champion who can split-push very well and in late game, if you are fed, you win the 1v2 or 1v3 safely.
Items

Now let's look at the core items of my favourite build. Obviusly this list can changed based on the situation, expecially the "first-back", when you're behind or it's a difficult lane, the first item will be difensive like Glacial Shroud or Negatron Cloak.

The best 1st back can be desired, good mana pool and an essential passive for our little blue man.
Use the spells as much as possible to transform it quickly.

Useful 1st back if you are against a heavy AP like Teemo, Swain, Viktor etc etc..., later can become Abyssal Mask.

Useful 1st back if you are against a heavy AD like Tryndamere or Riven, later can become Frozen Heart

Best boots for AP champ. Change this only in desperate situation.

HPs, mana and sustain of life and mana... Absolutely rush. Can become Abyssal Mask or Rod of Ages

The best offensive item for Ryze, huge mana pool, a passive that increases damage based on mana and an active one that allows you to survive very difficult situations. It's absolutely a must on our little blue man. Thanks to this you can outplay in many situation.

Our dear ROA, gives everything Ryze needs and helps him to even better scales in late game. The time it takes to complete itself requires that it be created as quickly as possible, So ... FARM !!

Incredible item if you are vs strong AP, and his passive, can help you, and your AP teamates, to deal more damage. Good HPs, mana and MR.

If you need armor, this item is the best choice for Ryze. The mana obtained increases the damage, and the armor gives you the chance to survive / win at unfavorable trade against strong AD champions.

Good stats for low price, MP is alaways good.
THE END
Ok, we have reached the end of this short guide, I hope it will help you to discover this fun champion and maybe climb in ranked. I will try to keep my guide always updated. Thanks to everyone and see you soon!
