Season 13 - A Simple Nautilus Support Guide

By jmp_01_
Introduction
Hello!

I am Feet Sucker. I play Nautilus quite often and there is a current event going on in which I am participating.

You can find my account here:
https://u.gg/lol/profile/euw1/feet%20sucker/overview
My current peak is Diamond 1 98 LP and I am looking to aim for Master or higher!

With this I want to thank you for reading this far. Down below you can see all the chapters I added to this guide and I hope it will help you out when you play Nautilus in Ranked!

Thank you so much <3

Nautilus Overview
In this Guide Chapter there is not really much to say, all necessary information is on the LoL-Wiki of Nautilus: https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/Nautilus/LoL

You can also find Nautilus's patch history here:

Pros & Cons
Just like any other champion, Nautilus has strenghts and weaknesses.

I will start with the strengths of Nautilus:
+ High base stats
+ One of the best crowd-control in the game
+ Very good at going all-in in 2v2s
+ Very good at peeling your ADC / Carry

Now im going to continue with the weaknesses of Nautilus:
- Lack of mobility
- Big champion hitbox
- Falls off late-game
- Not so tanky if falling behind
- Without your hook your level 1 is nothing
Items
Now to my favourite part of this whole guide: Items

If you are playing Nautilus on Support you usually do not have so much open space when it comes to itemizing, but probably still more than most others.

I am going through the whole list but explain shortly what each item does / when to build it.
The list is split in "Mythic Items", "Legendary Items" and "Boots". All of them have their items listed alphabetically ascending as well.

Mythic Items:

- Evenshroud
I would say it is also a really good mythic option since you and your team can deal a lot more damage to the CC'd target and it also helps making snowballing easier.

- Locket of the Iron Solari
Probably in 75% or more you kind of have to build this due to survivability in bigger teamfights. It can really make a difference with the shield active ability.

- Radiant Virtue
I did not expect that Riot Games would adjust this item and make it so cheap that even Support Tanks can use it now. Compared to other Mythics, this item lets you live longer compared to Locket of the Iron Solari and heals your allies as well for a good chunk. I need to check it out further but in my opinion you cannot do anything wrong with this item.

- Shurelya's Battlesong
I think considering it is an Enchanter Support mythic option, it can still be good on Nautilus even if you cannot use the passive with the bonus movements speed when healing / shielding allies. Although I would only buy it if your team comp is good to utilize the active. It also makes you less tanky of course since it does not have the Aegis of the Legion component.

Conclusion:
In my opinion, these are the only 4 viable options for Nautilus on Support role. Other mythic items just do not fit due high prize, bad utilization etc.

Legendary Items:

- Abyssal Mask
In my opinion really underrated item, especially for supports. Good when you got some magic damage in your team and enemy team has Magic Resist and / or magic damage.

- Anathema's Chains
Really good if enemy team has a stronger carry since this item helps you take you less damage from the champion you marked as well as reducing their Tenacity by 20% as long as you are near them. It can really make a difference so I really think this item is really good in some situations.

- Force of Nature
It got heavily nerfed in Patch 13.10, I do not know why since it was the only viable Magic Resist for Support Tanks with Abyssal Mask. I still think it is decent enough but you can truly feel the hard nerf compared to before.

- Frozen Heart
Good item against many AD champions, it grants you everthing you need except for HP, but the 90 Armor and 400 Mana will make up for it. 2700 Gold is a good prize for it and you usually build it into champions that rely on auto-attacks, making its value spike if you play against e.g Caitlyn and Yasuo.

- Knight's Vow
One of the tank Support items that you build to protect the carry. The item helps your ADC survive longer / not take too much damage. It's not really only for protecting / supporting ADCs but you can use it on any type of champion, even when it comes to frontline Juggernauts or simply just fed Skirmishers as long as it means they are the carry.

- Randuin's Omen
Just like Frozen Heart another item that has Warden's Mail as component. It's really good against Marksmen due to reducing incoming crit damage as well as slowing enemies near you with the active of the item.

- Thornmail
I think that Thornmail is better off this season compared to the ones before. You mostly do not want to rush Thornmail first item, Bramble Vest is enough for Grievous Wounds (Anti-Heal). You can still finish it as second item if enemy team comp really has brutal healing. It also does good damage against auto-attackers. I recommend rushing it against Soraka, Taric and in general any champion that has so much (self-)healing in its own kit.

- Zeke's Convergence
Yeah, I think really one of the items that are always good if you have a Marksman that lanes with you. It can be activated with any CC of yours and your ADC deals more damage. As simple as it sounds. It also provides okay-ish stats for the prize, but your ADC will benefit a lot from it, so it is considered a must buy for many Nautilus players.

Conclusion:
Do not mess around with components, finish your item(s) instead of building 4 components for 3 different items at once. Only get Bramble Vest if needed.

Boots:

- Boots
Basic boots, I would always try to look to get Boots on first back. Mobility is crucial for Nautilus so really try to get at least 300 Gold on your first back for your Boots.

- Boots of Swiftness
I have never been a fan of them. I do not think that they are good on Nautilus so I would avoid them whenever possible.

- Ionian Boots of Lucidity
Ionian's are really good if you want to fight whenever possible since these reduce your Flash as well as your Ignite or Exhaust cooldowns by a lot. They are also cheaper than some other Boots, making them sometimes a good first buy as well.

- Mercury's Treads
Into AP-heavy teams or simply if the enemy team has so much CC .

- Mobility Boots
I just do not like them. Of course they are good for roaming, but outside of roaming they have no meaning at all. I do not recommend them ever.

- Plated Steelcaps
Into AD-heavy teams or if enemy team has mixed damage, but block some of the damage from empowered auto-attacks. Example would be Darius's W - Crippling Strike or Jax's W - Empower.

Conclusion:
Only build Ionian Boots of Lucidity, Mercury's Treads or Plated Steelcaps depending on the situation.
Combos for Nautilus
Nautilus has many different combos you can use to CC-lock your enemies. Here are 2 of the most common ones.

Combo 1: Q - AA - W (AA) - E - AA

Combo 2: Flash - AA - W (AA) - Q - AA - E

These 2 are the most common combos and can be extended as well with your Ultimate - Depth Charge

And here you can extend your Ultimate and surprise your enemy like in the example below:

Warding
As Support you are also responsible for Warding and Vision for your team.

Here you can find the most basic and one of the best Warding spots for normal Stealth Wards and Control Wards if you are on Blue Side. It is effective and does not make you buy Control Wards on every single back.

Of course you may think "Wait, you cannot place 2 Control Wards at once!". Yes that is true, you have to decide if you ward the bush between Enemy Blue Sentinel and Gromp or in the so-called "Tribush" below the Dragon Pit. But you actually can place 2 Control Wards with a specific item: Vigilant Wardstone, it is allowing you to have 2 Control Wards placed at the same time. The Stealth Wards should be used to avoid being cheesed by a lane gank and / or perma-ganking enemy Jungler.

Blue-Side Ward Map:

And basically the same applies for when you play on Red Side.

Apart from that, you do not need to know much more for Warding and Vision. Also do not waste your Charges from your Support Item for unnecessary spots. Never take Farsight Alteration. After you completed your first Support Item quest, always get Oracle Lens.
Conclusion
Thank you for reading my Nautilus Mini Guide for the S13 Mini Guide Contest. It really means a lot to me. :)
