Who Am I?

Hello! Welcome to my Azir guide, and also my first guide on this site. Well, the first guide I've really made anywhere. Feedback is appreciated. I'm a gold Azir main. That is all.

Which build should I go with?

Rod of Ages Azir is one of my favorite builds, not only are you still doing the same damage but you aren't blown up when a Janna autoattacks you! Go with this if you want a safer start of the game but are willing to sacrifice damage. This build works best in low bursty matchups such as Ahri or Akali. Consider buying Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads to add to your tankiness. This build is also good when your team doesn't have any tanks and you'll be taking your fair share of hits in a fight.

Luden's Tempest Azir is reliant on the burst he gets from Thunderlord's Decree . This is great for roaming because of the movement speed and if you're the only one who can actually poke throughout the game. Since it's great for burst and poke, there's no need for any extra attack speed in the build.

Morellonomicon is best for bursting squishies. This is the build I usually go with since the build path is just extremely good compared to others.

Feel free to build Zhonya's Hourglass or Banshee's Veil against champions with high kill pressure in lane such as Katarina LeBlanc Talon.

Pros / Cons

Mobile - Safe
Long range
Strong teamfighter
Can single handedly carry games harder than other midlaners
Great waveclear
Takes tower fast, even without any attack speed items
A lot of outplay
Instant autoattack, easy to cs.
LeBlanc is nerfed
Cho'Gath is rarely played

Weak level 1
Squishy
Low movement speed
Hard to learn, even harder to master
Positioning can be hard
Lichbane LeBlanc is really strong
You'll run into Cho'Gath mains every once in a while
Chances are, you'll get tired of hearing SHURIMA.

Summoner Spells

Flash is the best summoner spell in the game, you don't have an escape until level 3 and sometimes it isn't able to get you out of every sticky situation. You'll take this every game. It's also
yellow, like SHURIMA!

Barrier is the second best summoner spell for Azir. Take this by default. Much like flash, it's yellow, like SHURIMA!

If you're comfortable with this, use it against skillshot reliant champions such as Xerath Vel'Koz Keep in mind Barrier blocks more damage.

Against high CC comps like you would any other midlaner.

Don't fall into this trap, Ignite isn't that good on Azir. Taking a defensive summoner spell instead will help ensure you're alive to keep doing damage, you don't need any extra damage to your soldiers.

Masteries

Thunderlord's Decree vs Deathfire Touch

This is purely preference/situational.

Thunderlord's Decree is if you want higher kill potential in lane and if you're looking up to 3 hit blow up a single target in the lategame. Deathfire Touch is better for sustained damage, don't forget - you ARE a high DPS champion. Take this if you're looking to do large amounts of AOE damage with multiple soldiers. It also reduces your reliance on Thunderlord's Decree with your 3 poke throughout the game. In lane, you'll be able to Q more and still do a lot of damage instead of waiting when Thunderlord's Decree is off cooldown. Also, you're able to take Piercing Thoughts which gives % magic penetration.

Azir with stormraider's surge, I've seen this done, but personally I don't like it even though Azir is really slow. It helps you kite yes, but it's pretty useless until you're almost full build.

Precision

With enough practice, we really don't need to take any attack speed on Azir.

Items

Situational Items

Combined with Thunderlord's Decree It'll make it easy to burst down a target of your choosing. It also gives some movement speed, which is great on slow Azir.

I take this as a mid game or late game defensive item. It's helpful against abilities like Event Horizon Rupture Rocket Grab Light Binding that leave you a very low chance of survival after getting hit by.

Even though it's yellow LIKE SHURIMA, I really don't like this item, it lowers your damage and there are better items for health such as Liandry's Torment Banshee's Veil so why is this good for Azir? In high elo where you have a reliable team following up on things you do.You're a permanent slow bot for your team. That's why it's core on a lot of Azir guides. Everywhere else it's better to get any other item. So, when do I get Rylai's Crystal Scepter? Darius Garen Hecarim If you go up someone like them that are easily kitable, but you still need more peel for yourself outside of your Emperor's Divide then consider getting it.

This is a great item to rush when laning against someone who's really dangerous to you. Get a Lost Chapter or two Doran's Rings for the mana sustain and then build towards this item. You can also pair this up with a Ninja Tabi for increased armor against Zed Talon and other ad midlaners. Most importantly, it makes Azir say a little something in game.

Almost always an item I get on Azir as a 5th or 6th item. Maybe 4th if you're really snowballing hard.

This item is amazing. Flat magic penetration, a bit of ability power, health, but the thing that makes it so great is the passive. Helps you burst down squishies and melt tanks at the same time. Consider getting this core in almost every game.

Farming

Many midlaners lack waveclear before they get items

At level one, shove your opponent in early. Many midlaners such as Anivia Annie Lux lack waveclear early. Do this by setting a Arise! down so it can hit and attack all 3 of the caster minions at once when they line up in a row. Finish off the melees with autoattacks or another soldier if needed. At level one you should avoid trading unless your opponent makes a heavy mistake or if they're Akali or Diana and you're punishing them for coming close to the wave.

Azir's Arise! cost little mana, focus them on last hitting and use your Q to poke your opponent down when you have an opening. Most of the time though, you'll just want to farm to reach lategame. Use your Arise! sparingly, you're pretty defenseless without it. It's always a good idea to back off right as you've used it. Live to level 2, you'll need to wait for 7 minions to die for that to happen.

Some champions may gank you early

Be careful about pushing, Hecarim Shaco Lee Sin can get an early kill off of you since before level 3 you're a squishy immobile bird that can't fly due to your lack of Shifting Sands.

Trading

Trading with Azir is different than most champions, you either win the trade hard and take little to no damage in return, or they get on you and you almost die.

Using your Shifting Sands grants a shield if you pass through someone. This is helpful, it gives you a small shield and it also moves you. This is great for early trading because you're able to dodge skills such as Dark Sphere Force of Will and you can Shifting Sands + Conquering Sands towards her and keep autoing her. It's also great to dodge skills like Orianna's Command: Attack to avoid her FULL combo!

You should try to trade with 2 Arise! soldiers if you can. Have one out already last hitting with it. Get another one out and Conquering Sands towards them when they're near the caster minions. Get some double soldier autos off and then hit the caster minions with both soldiers, deleting them pretty fast and shoving the wave towards their tower. Be careful though, this sets your Conquering Sands Arise! on cooldown and you don't have a very good escape.

If you take Thunderlord's Decree , always try to get 3 hits off and try to only poke when it's up to avoid wasting mana.

VV Soon to be a video of dodging orianna's full combo with azir's dash

Playing from behind

So, you've fallen behind on Azir? Maybe you got camped, or that Talon just kept killing you over and over. Whatever the reason is, you just can't fight anymore.
    Use your
Shurima's Legacy defensively, meaning use it in a lane that you predict is about to get sieged.

Become a waveclear bot, make use of the range of your Conquering Sands and stop splitpushers. You shouldn't die, as you're behind you should have been building Zhonya's Hourglass. That and your Emperor's Divide Shifting Sands should prevent you from dying unless they send what, like 4 after you?

Shurima Shuffle! No, seriously. Use Emperor's Divide to catch out almost every lone target you see, it doesn't matter if you die - you're already pretty useless. The most you can do right now is keep farming and pick off targets with your ultimate to get your ADC, jungler, and anyone else fed.

Things that I put here

If you're new to Azir and find yourself having trouble positioning, try attacking from behind walls.

A good Azir isn't a good one because of his shuffling, it's because they can kite and position very well. Positioning and kiting are key with Azir.

Against champions such as Vayne who can kill you just as fast as you can kill them, do a W +EQ right into their face and Emperor's Dividethem immediately. Place another Arise! down and kill them while they're knocked up.

When you're ahead in lane, poke non stop. Your job as a laning Azir is to take total control of the lane and do your best to prevent your enemy from farming.
