Introduction

Greetings Summoners,

Welcome to my first guide on how to play Varus "The Arrow of Retribution".
I will go into brief depth on certain things such as items,
and go into further depth on how to use and play Varus to his ridiculously carrying capability.
I hope you enjoy this Guide on how to play Varus.

Quoted:
Varus is a mix of physical ranged carry and caster, adept at whittling down individual targets or assassinating them from afar. Utilizing his mix of persistent and burst damage, Varus is an exceptional addition to any team composition.
- Phreak

PLEASE READ: This is my first build, dont expect it to be amazing and dont forget to comment!
ALSO: The OFFICIAL Riot Games Champion Spotlight
for Varus is at the end of the guide for any extra information you may seek.

Thank you!

Lore

For his incomparable skill with the bow and his unquestioned sense of honor, Varus was chosen to be the warden of a sacred Ionian temple. The temple was built to contain an ancient pit of corruption so vile that Ionian Elders feared it could envelop the island in darkness. Varus prided himself on his position, as only the most exceptional Ionian warriors were selected for the role. He lived with his family in a nearby village and led a quiet life of disciplined routine until the day the forces of Noxus invaded Ionia. Their shock troops left nothing but death and desolation in their wake, and the temple lay in their path. Varus was forced to make a decision. He was bound by honor to stay and defend the temple, but without him the village's few inhabitants could offer little resistance against the oncoming war machine. Gravely, he chose to fulfill his duty as a warden. The corruption could not be allowed to escape.

His arrows sundered the troops who tried to wrest the temple from him that day. However, when he returned to his village, he found that it had been reduced to a smoldering graveyard. Remorse at the sight of his slain family gave way to overwhelming regret and then to seething hatred. He swore to slaughter every Noxian invader, but first he needed to become stronger. He turned to that which he had sacrificed everything to protect. The pit of corruption would consume him wholly, as a flame devours a wick, but its abominable power would burn within him until he was lost. This was a path from which there could be no return. With grim resolve, he condemned himself to the black flames, feeling malevolent energy bond to his skin... and with it, the promise of ruin. He left, seeking the blood of all Noxians involved with the invasion, a grisly task that eventually led him to the invasion's most infamous perpetrators in the League of Legends.

"The life of an arrow is fleeting, built of nothing but direction and intent."

    Defensive Masteries:
  • Hardiness Applied to make Varus more durable

Runes

This "Rune" section is not in alot of depth because in my opinion
runes are all about personal preference, Here are the Runes i use otherwise:

My Runes:
Greater Mark of Attack Damage Is used for a slight early game boost in AD (attack damage).
Greater Seal of Armor Is used for a boost in armour (also early game).
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist Is used for a boost in Magic Resistance.
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage Attack damage increase.

Other Rune Choices:
greater mark of desolation Armour Penetration
greater glyph of sheilding Magic restist, to combat enemy support/mage.

Abilities

  • Living Vengeance (Passive):
"On champion kill or assist, Varus gains 40% attack speed for 6 seconds.
On minion kill, Varus gains 20% attack speed for 3 seconds."

The effect of this passive is incredible, it really does try to force the player to last hit minions and make sure they get that champion kill, it also helps with snowballing and getting multiple kills at once.

  • Piercing Arrow (Q):
"Varus starts drawing back his next shot, gradually increasing its range and damage, then he fires it, dealing minimum 10 / 43 / 77 / 110 / 143 (+1.0 per attack damage) to maximum 15 / 65 / 115 / 165 / 215 (+1.6 per attack damage) physical damage, reduced by 15% per enemy hit (minimum 33%).

While preparing to shoot, Varus cannot autoattack or use abilities, and his movement speed is slowed by 20%. After 4 seconds, Piercing Arrow fails but refunds half its mana cost. "

This ability i use as my "Poke", after i have some stacks from Blighted Quiver i use the Piercing Arrow to deal extra damage towards the champion, I've found this poke is unforgiving against squishy champions.

  • Blighted Quiver (W):
    "Varus' basic attacks deal bonus 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26 (+0.25 per ability power) magic damage and apply Blight for 6 seconds (stacks 3 times).
Varus' other abilities detonate Blight, dealing magic damage equal to 2 / 2.75 / 3.5 / 4.25 / 5% (+0.01% per ability power) of the target's maximum health per stack.

This damage is capped against monsters."

This skill is the "santas little helper" with your Q, you poke targets as it applies Blighted Quiver then you use your Q, you can either choose to max this 2nd or last, but i generally max it last, as i only use it for poking in the early stages of the game.

  • Hail of Arrows (E):
    "Varus fires a hail of arrows that deal 65 / 105 / 145 / 185 / 225 (+0.6 per bonus attack damage) physical damage and desecrate the ground. Desecrated ground slows enemies' Movement Speed by 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45% and reduces their healing and regeneration by 50%."

This skill is useful for slowing down your enemies, which results in, you hitting them more with your auto attack or you're abilitys, which therefore leads to more damage.
I usually max this 2nd, but its personal prefernce on which one you max first.

  • Chain of Corruption (R):
"Varus flings out a tendril of corruption that deals 150 / 250 / 350 (+1.0 per ability power) magic damage and immobilizes the first enemy champion hit for 2 seconds.
The corruption then spreads towards nearby uninfected enemy champions, applying the same damage and immobilize if it reaches them. The corruption will continue to spread until there are no further unaffected targets in range."

His ultimate is Chain of Corruption, this move can easily change around team fights, if applied at the right time. master the art of this beautiful ultimate and you could turn around the whole game!

Items

Main Items

  • : Increases attack speed, (one of the main things needed for a carry)
  • : Great life steal, even better with the stacks, can heal yourself extremely quick again by ducking into the jungle or taking out a wave of creeps
  • : Incredible item, amazing for dealing tons and tons of damage, not to mention in creases your critical hits to 250% which is a huge increase
  • Your on personal choice weather to buy one or two, i prefer two as it gives you a higher crit chance.

    Other Items:
  • Double dorans blades at the start of the game can or cannot be used well, some say they are a waste of money, but others say you can out farm and harass your opposition and hurt more early game with another extra blade.
  • Helps to take out the tanky opposition quite nicely, and gives you an additional 40 AD.
  • Frozen mallets give you a great chunk of health and an amazing slow that can really rip into an enemy while fleeing as it slows the enemy by 30%.
  • This item is a tough item, towards the end of the game you need some sustainability in team fights, and because your the AD carry people tend to focus you, you could either take a guardian angel if your against a fairly balanced opposition.
  • Great health/sustain.
  • Gives you a decent amount of attack speed, attack damage, and reduces the enemy's armour, what more could you want.
  • Great counter against a highly based AD team for more sustainability in team fights.
  • 55 Magic resist, and is great against any soft or hard CC
  • Health, Magic resist and some mana, gives you a nice little shield to

Summoner Spells

Is a essential as Varus has no way of quickly escaping enemies apart from flash.

Exhaust can come in handy, as it yeilds the movement speed of your targeted champion, making them more vulnerable for attack and damage.

Other Spells:

As varus has no escape tools apart from the summoner spell flash, this can also be handy to either chase down the enemy, or to run away.

Teleport in my opinion is only helpful for solo top, or for solo mid, as you can make it back to your turret/lane alot quicker.

Heal is a good spell to have as it can lead to making your team win a team fight, by healing yourself and all nearby allies.

Releases you from enemy CC. Can be useful as Varus has no escape abilitys.

Tactics/Combos

Poking:
For poking the enemy team while laning, take an early point in your Blighted Quiver so you can have extra damage when using your Piercing Arrow on them.
Keep poking them until they have a stack or two of Blighted Quiver on your opposing champion, then use your Q from a safe range, to slowly dwindle down their health.

When you start to play more aggressive with Varus you are going to want to basic attack your opposing champion until about half health or so, then your going to unleash on them,
First you will trap them with your ultimate freezing them to the spot for a few seconds, you will then follow up with 2 or 3 basic attacks for stacks of blight then use your Hail of Arrows so their movement speed is slowed, and while the "E" is being shot you should also shoot off your "Q". By this time your opponent should either be drastically low on health, or dead.

Team Fights:
In team fights, make sure you time your ultimate at an appropriate time, a great time is when the enemy team is all bunch together or when they are running away.
Mastering his ultimate takes some time, but its well worth it in the end.
