Mastery Tree Is Outdated
WARNING: These masteries are still using the old tree and have not been updated to the new tree by the guide author. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Masteries
Introduction
This guide is undergoing updates, updates will be as following:
- adding teamwork/stragety section (I should really start on that section already)
- adding jungle section

Hello everyone I’m AkaiSwift and this is my

Masteries
For the masteries I focused on defense because my item build has a bit lack of it. I chosen offense as second tree because of it's ability power, cool down reduction and magic penetration.
So to be honest this mastery tree should explain itself. It's based on defense even though maybe worth a little explanation I chosen attack as second tree. I've chosen this tree because in the build I’ve got a huge lack of AP and magic penetration. Also the only really useful ones would be
Obviously I chosen in this mastery tree attack because of its ability power, magic penetration and cool down reduction. As second tree I chosen utility mostly because of the mana bonus and mana regeneration bonus, you can of course choose defense as second tree then I'd use these:
So this mastery page may seem strange in the beginning since the most mastery pages have some kind of 21-9 distribution but I ensure you this works. I took 2 points in offense for the
Runes

I can understand you don't want to have 3 pages of
| Runes | |||||||||||||||
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration 9 |
Greater Seal of Armor 9 |
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist 9 |
Greater Quintessence of Health 9 |
||||||||||||
Greater Quintessence of Health:Useful in early game and when not stacked, most of my HP comes from
Feast with a extra bonus from
Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Late game you'll probably have those items but in early game you won't so then this rune gives you more of that early game tank status.
Greater Seal of Armor:More survivability against AD DPS-ers and also helps for that early game tank status.
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist:More survivability against AP DPS-ers and also helps for that early game tank status.
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration: It makes sure your abilities do more damage and since my item build does not contain any magic penetration items this is most useful. Of course you won't need it with
Feast, but the burst combination attack of
Rupture
Feral Scream and
Feast with this rune it will do greater damage. I'll give more explanation of the use of this combination later on.

| Runes | |||||||||||||||
Greater Mark of Health 9 |
Greater Seal of Armor 9 |
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist 9 |
Greater Quintessence of Health 3 |
||||||||||||
Greater Quintessence of Health:Well of course for this early game survivability, since you're the tank they'll target you first and from level 6 they'll really start focusing on you because they don't want you to get too much
Feast stacks.
Greater Seal of Armor:More survivability against AD DPS-ers and also helps for that early game tank status.
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist:More survivability against AP DPS-ers and also helps for that early game tank status. (Well those last 2 should sound really familiar by now, sorry for the repeating but it's just to explain the choice.)
Greater Mark of Health:It was quite hard to figure out what rune to place here aiming for primary and defense in the end it became
Greater Mark of Health as you noticed of course. The reason I chose this 1 is the same as with
Greater Quintessence of Health.

| Runes | |||||||||||||||
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration 9 |
Greater Seal of Mana Regeneration 9 |
Greater Glyph of Mana 9 |
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power 3 |
||||||||||||
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power:Well it's quite obviously why I've chosen this rune I guess, the early game damage and for in late game that little bit extra damage. I'd get this rune and
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration as first, because of the fact that with your
Vorpal Spikes deal extra AP damage.- Greater Seal of Replenishment:I've chosen this rune for it's mana regeneration what you'll really need as an AP
Cho'Gath because early game you'll run out of mana very quickly.
Greater Glyph of Mana:Hello mana bonus, of course the same reason as with the greater seal of replenishment. I guess i've repeated it enough now you have mana trouble in begin and as and AP mage we cant have that.
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration:Well magic penetration you won't really need it with
Feast but it empowers the other skills and since you'll be in trouble if the enemy tank is going to be smart *** and take much magic resistance we can better take some magic penetration.

| Runes | |||||||||||||||
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration 9 |
Greater Seal of Armor 9 |
Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction 9 |
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power 3 |
||||||||||||
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration: Magic penetration guess I've explained this enough times
Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction: Cool down reduction. Getting your
Feast max in least time possible is a must- geater seal of resilience: Armor for the tank status and early game survivability in jungle.
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power: Ability power, makes your
Vorpal Spikes stronger early game
Summoner Spells

|
Flash: it can help you greatly when you run into a group and have to get out quickly. Or whenever you want to chase an enemy and want to close in quick to slow him/her with
Rupture.
Clarity: it will help out greatly in early game when you ran out of mana, what will happen quickly if you spam your skills too much early game
Ignite: like I mentioned earlier
Cho'Gath isn't the quickest champion so when an enemy is about to escape you might want to quickly use
Ignite to secure the kill
Cleanse: if choosing this one I'd choose it in the tank build and replace it with
Exhaust. It can be useful to escape from a group of enemies though I don't use it much.
Surge: alright I know this seems a bit weird, but in fact it's more useful then you'd think on first sight. Because from
Surge you get attack speed and AP, using these bonuses in combination with the combo of
Rupture
Feral Scream and
Feast it will be more powerful but mainly I've chosen this 1 because of this: using this skill in combination with
Vorpal Spikes you deal more damage because of 2 reasons: 1) you deal more damage with your
Vorpal Spikes. 2) you deal more damage because of the higher attack speed. Remember its alternative it has a reason it isn't chosen in the main set,
Exhaust just has more potential. If you decide to use it I'd recommend using it in the AP build.
Smite:Well obviously for in the jungle build. Every jungler needs
Smite even if you got an awesome ultimate like
Feast.
Skill explanation
Carnivore: Whenever
Cho'Gath kills a unit, he recovers 34-68 (+2.0 each level) health and 3.5-7.75 9 (+0.25 each level) mana. The values restored increase with
Cho'Gath his level.
Carnivore +
Shurelya's Reverie will cause you to regenerate both mana and health quickly. I personally think this is an great passive for a tank like
Cho'Gath because you'll need less (or none) lifesteal items and also less mana regeneration/ health regeneration items.
Rupture:Ruptures the ground at target location, popping enemy units into the air, dealing damage and slowing them. Ruptures the ground at target location. After a short delay, enemies are launched into the air for 1 second, dealt 80/135/190/245/305 (+1) magic damage, and have their movement speed slowed by 60% for 3 seconds.Cost: 90 Mana, Range: 950.
Rupture is like the most useful skills of
Cho'Gath if you ask me, combining fleeing and chasing possibilities with great damage. It comes to it's best use when combined with
Rylai's Crystal Scepter, leaving your enemies barely able to move. Now, I'll come back on the burst combination I mentioned earlier. By using
Rupture in combination with
Feral Scream and
Feast you'll most likely kill squishy enemies like
Fiddlesticks (I succeeded at this quite a lot) and leave stronger enemies like
Graves crippled to be finished off by allies.
tip:When enemies are running use
Rupture in the direction the enemies are heading at a distance that the outer circle is at the feet of the enemy.
feral scream:
Cho'Gath unleashes a terrible scream at enemies in a cone, dealing magic damage and Silencing enemies for a few seconds.
Cho'Gath screams in a cone in front of him, silencing enemies for 2/2.25/2.5/2.75/3 second(s) and causing 75/125/175/225/275 (+0.7) magic damage. Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 Mana, Range: 300
Feral Scream is extremely useful against mages. But it can be usefull on more ways like when
Tryndamere is chasing your ally which has low health you can silence him so he won't use
Spinning Slash.
vorpal spikes: Cho'Gath's attacks passively release deadly spikes, dealing damage to all enemy units in front of him. Toggle: Cho'Gath's physical attacks launch spikes that deal 20/35/50/65/80 (+0.3) magic damage to a line in front of him. Cost: No Cost, Range: 40
Vorpal Spikes is useful with farming minions quickly. It will be even a greater help when you bought
Rylai's Crystal Scepter, because from that moment when
Vorpal Spikes is toggled on even your basic attack slow enemies.
tip: When attacking a tower while enemy champion is near- toggle off else you might hit champion and tower will target you.
feast:Devours an enemy unit, dealing a high amount of damage that ignores magic resist. If the target is killed,
Cho'Gath grows, gaining maximum health (maximum 6 stacks).
Cho'Gath loses up to 3 stacks upon death. Deals 300/475/650 (+0.7) true damage to target champion, or 1000 true damage to target minion (ignores resists). If the target is killed by
Feast,
Cho'Gath grows, gaining 90/120/150 maximum health (maximum 6 stacks).
Cho'Gath loses up to 3 stacks upon death. Cost: 100 Mana, Range: 100
Feast is a great ultimate for both tanking and dealing damage. It deals true damage what means that it ignores all magic resist, and when you kill an enemy with this ultimate you get extra maximum health! Even though be careful when dieing because you'll lose half of the bonus maximum health you've gained.
tip: If you're having trouble getting enemy champions to low enough health
Feast on minions till you reach max bonus (6 stacks)
tip: Many people forget that after you've got the maximum bonus health you can use
Feast as an high potential damage skill, you don't need the enemy to die from it anymore!
As people who read my guide before I updated it might have noticed I decided to make skill sequence and skill explanation 2 different chapters this is because the skill sequence was getting too long.
random
So before heading on with the further I thought this would be a good time to show you some video I made specially for this build it's how
Cho'Gath looks like in its most massive form, with
Wild Growth,
Surge, storm shield and the maximum stacks of
Feast
Like my video on youtube if you liked it thx ^^
Skill Sequence
why I've chosen this order: I start up with
Why I've chosen this order: This skill sequence seems a bit hard if you look at it in the beginning and it isn't some standard sequence you'd use but it's quite easy when you think about it. If you didn't notice it yet the order is as following: first level up the first 3 skills in order, then max out
Why I've chosen this order:At first we level
Why I've chosen this order:So i've chosen this order because of the fact that in the jungle your Items

-
Doran's Ring: +80 Health +15 Ability Power +5 Mana Regen per 5 seconds
item for that early game ability power and a small mana regeneration boost so you can use your skill more often, of course the health bonus is never bad on
Cho'Gath. This all together makes a fine starting item. -
Boots of speed:UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 1 (does not stack with other Boots)
It gives you bit more mobility which gives you more chance on successful escape and chasing -
Tear of the goddess: +350 Mana +7 Mana Regen per 5 seconds UNIQUE Passive: Each time you use an ability, your maximum Mana increases by 4 (3 second cooldown). Bonus caps at +1000 Mana. Does not stack with Archangel's Staff or Manamune
From now on you can spam your abilities a lot more because of the mana regeneration and every time you use a spell you get an extra 4 maximum mana. -
Mercury's treads:+25 Magic Resist UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 2 (does not stack with other Boots) UNIQUE Passive: +35 Tenacity (Tenacity reduces the duration of stuns, slows, taunts, fears, silences, blinds and immobilizes. Does not stack with other Tenacity items.)
So obviously these are tank shoes, magic resistance and tenacity. Well this quite much reduces the effect of all skills both in damage and in special effects like slow stun etc, don't think I need to explain more. -
chain vest:+45 Armor
So I noticed after playing for a while that early game you just don't have enough armor to survive against AD carries so I’ve decided to put this item here to build up some armor while concentrating on the main items. -
Abyssal scepter:+70 Ability Power +57 Magic Resist UNIQUE Aura: Reduces the Magic Resist of nearby enemy champions by 20
A double effect item at once since you deal more damage and the enemies take more magic damage because of the magic resistance reduction! -
guardian angel:+68 Armor +38 Magic Resist UNIQUE Passive: Revives your champion upon death, restoring 750 Health and 375 Mana (5 minute cooldown).
Great item for tanks, gives more survivability with extra magic resist and armor and once in the 5 minutes revives you! Give everything you have to protect your team you'll have a second chance to escape, got killed in 1 vs 1? Don't worry just get back up and take revenge! And you won't lose any stack when being revived. -
archangel's staff:+400 Mana +25 Mana Regen per 5 seconds +45 Ability Power Passive: Grants Ability Power equal to 3% of your maximum Mana. UNIQUE Passive: Each time you use an ability, your maximum Mana increases by 4 (3 second cooldown). Bonus caps at +1000 Mana. Does not stack with Tear of the Goddess or Manamune
Mana, mana regeneration, ability power AND a passive that gives you extra ability power equal to 3% of your maximum mana. I buy this item this late because I think the other items have more use and this item will only come to it's full potential when it's maximum mana passive is stacked as high as possible, this is why I bought
Tear of the Goddess earlier too, when you buy this item the stocked bonus mana in
Tear of the Goddess gets transferred to this item. -
warmog's armor:+920 Health +30 Health Regen per 5 seconds Passive: Minion kills permanently grant 3.5 Health and .10 Health Regen per 5 seconds. Champion kills and assists permanently grant 35 Health and 1 Health Regen per 5 seconds. Bonuses cap at +350 Health and +10 Health Regen per 5 seconds.
So this is your source of health en health regeneration in this build, very useful specially with your
Vorpal Spikes since you'll farm minions fast you'll be able to stack this item quite quick, where much champions take it early game for the stacks you can fill it up so quick you can easily get this late game -
rabadon's deathcap:+140 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: Increases Ability Power by 30%
Well extra ability power +another 30% ability power. Your resource for damage, nothing more to be said.

-
regrowth pendant:+15 Health Regen per 5 seconds
early game health regen, I've got magic resist armor and health in my runes but no health regen so it's the first thing we take. -
mercury's treads:+25 Magic Resist UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 2 (does not stack with other Boots) UNIQUE Passive: +35 Tenacity (Tenacity reduces the duration of stuns, slows, taunts, fears, silences, blinds and immobilizes. Does not stack with other Tenacity items.)
So obviously these are tank shoes, magic resistance and tenacity. Well this quite much reduces the effect of all skills both in damage and in special effects like slow stun etc, don't think I need to explain more. -
Glacial Shroud: +425 Mana +45 Armor UNIQUE Passive: +15% Cooldown Reduction
This item you'll most likely get around level 6, so armor to deal with AD DPS-ers a little mana bonus which will help stay in the lane longer. And most useful too 15% cool down reduction, this will greatly help getting the stacks for
Feast faster what of course is important for your health boost being a tank and all. -
Force of Nature: +76 Magic Resist +40 Health Regen per 5 seconds +8% Movement Speed UNIQUE Passive: Restores 0.35% of your maximum Health every second.
Well being
Cho'Gath with his great health bonus is fun and all, but what use has it when once you lose a quarter of your hp you'll hardly get it back? Of course you can get your health back using
Carnivore but
Force of Nature will also help a great deal. So easily said: great item for health regeneration. And of course the magic resist helps too. -
Frozen Heart: +99 Armor +500 Mana UNIQUE Passive: +20% Cooldown Reduction UNIQUE Aura: Reduces the Attack Speed of nearby enemies by 20%
Well armor, mana, cool down reduction, I don’t think I’ve to explain those things. The thing that caught my attention too when choosing item is how you help your whole team thanks to its attack speed reduction, this will lower the damage greatly with a team that depends on attack damage. -
Banshee's Veil: +375 Health +375 Mana +50 Magic Resist UNIQUE Passive: Gain a spell shield that blocks the next incoming enemy ability (45 second cooldown).
So first: health, I this gives a small bonus I know I got quite a lack of it in my build but that's because of
Feast it gives great health bonus, so I concentrated on making sure you don't loose your health to quickly. Further, obviously great tank item, magic resistance and once in a 90 seconds it blocks a ability completely (fun when the enemy uses his ult exactly when you got this effect). And a small mana bonus always useful for a mage like
Cho'Gath because even though you play like a tank don't forget, you're a mage -
guardian angel:+68 Armor +38 Magic Resist UNIQUE Passive: Revives your champion upon death, restoring 750 Health and 375 Mana (5 minute cooldown).
you're a tank not immortal, at least that's what they say. With this you might be able to convince them otherwise. Great item armor magic resistance, and a revive once every 5 minutes. Using this revive you can go all rampage for getting that 1 kill or give everything to save an ally, and the best you won't lose any stacks upon dieing. -
abyssal scepter:+70 Ability Power +57 Magic Resist UNIQUE Aura: Reduces the Magic Resist of nearby enemy champions by 20
As last but not least:
Abyssal Scepter giving using this to catch up the magic resistance with armor and give you AP, wait AP!? Didn't see that before in this tank build. That's right, at the end I thought lets at least give you a little damage, and a double effect at once since you deal more damage and the enemies take more magic damage because of the magic resistance reduction!

replace
mercury's treads by ---->
ninja tabi it gives you a greater defense against AD but be carefull if the enemy team got to much crowd control (like silence stun etc etc) keep replace
abyssal scepter by ---->
zhonya's hourglass this give you more armor and abilities power though it doesn't have the aura to low magic resistance it will give you the option to become invulnerable for 2 seconds, it might not seem long but it saved my *** many times because maybe in these 2 second you team can just get to you and scare the enemy offreplace
banshee's veil by ---->
thornmail it won't give you mana or HP but it will give you an great defense again AD damagers since it will give you 100armor and it will return 30% of the damage you get to them selves
replace
glacial shroud by ---->
kindlegem it will give you a small HP boost mid game but I'm more interested in the 10% cool down reduction which will let you stack up replace
frozen heart by ---->
spirit visage this will still give you the 10% cool down reduction and it will give you magic resistance with it, even more useful is the 15% extra health regeneration and healing effects (it gives more but we got no use of that) which will boost your
-
Doran's ring: +80 Health +15 Ability Power +5 Mana Regen per 5 seconds
item for that early game ability power and a small mana regeneration boost so you can use your skill more often, of course the health bonus is never bad on

boots of speed:UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 1 (does not stack with other Boots)
it gives you bit more mobility which gives you more chance on successful escape and chasing -
tear of the goddess: +350 Mana +7 Mana Regen per 5 seconds UNIQUE Passive: Each time you use an ability, your maximum Mana increases by 4 (3 second cooldown). Bonus caps at +1000 Mana. Does not stack with Archangel's Staff or Manamune
from now on you can spam your abilities a lot more because of the mana regeneration and every time you use a spell you get an extra 4 maximum mana. -
sorcerer's shoes: +20 Magic Penetration UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 2 (does not stack with other Boots)
this will of course give you more mobility and it empowers your abilities great because of the +20 magic penetration. -
Sheen:+250 Mana +25 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: After using an ability, your next basic attack deals bonus physical damage equal to your base Attack Damage (2 second cooldown). Does not stack with Trinity Force or Lich Bane.
So
Hextech Revolver was here earlier but I noticed it's not as useful as it seemed since the passive
Carnivore gives you enough survivability. I had to think of something new and then the
Sheen came in, it's a nice item for the mana and ability power boost, but except those two it also strengthens your basic attack since because of
Vorpal Spikes your basic attacks still are a great source of damage. -
rylai's crystals scepter:+500 Health +80 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: Dealing spell damage slows the target's Movement Speed by 35% for 1.5 seconds (15% for multi-target and damage-over-time spells).
I think this item is really necessary not only because of its extra health and ability power, but also because of the fact that with this combined with
Vorpal Spikes even your basic attack slow. -
rabadon's deathcap:+140 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: Increases Ability Power by 30%
well extra ability power plus another 30% ability power. Your resource for damage, nothing more to be said. -
Lich Bane:+350 Mana +80 Ability Power +30 Magic Resist +7% Movement Speed UNIQUE Passive: After using an ability, your next basic attack gains bonus physical damage equal to your Ability Power (2 second cooldown). Does not stack with Sheen or Trinity Force.
Replacement for
Will of the Ancients. Upgrade of your sheen futher empowering your damage output and it works just find with
Rylai's Crystal Scepter since the movement speed let's you catch up to your slowed enemies even faster -
archangel's staff:+400 Mana +25 Mana Regen per 5 seconds +45 Ability Power Passive: Grants Ability Power equal to 3% of your maximum Mana.
-
void staff:+70 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: +40% Magic Penetration
last but not least void staff, fitting with the terror of the void i think, it gives +70 ability power and plus another 40 magic penetration, now you'll be sure you can destroy any thank that approaches you.

-
cloth armor &3x
health potion :+18 Armor , Click to Consume: Restores 150 Health over 15 seconds
we'll make a standard jungler start, cloth to defend against the monsters and health potions for when you get below 50% health. -
tear of the goddes :+350 Mana +7 Mana Regen per 5 seconds UNIQUE Passive: Each time you use an ability, your maximum Mana increases by 4 (3 second cooldown). Bonus caps at +1000 Mana. Does not stack with Archangel's Staff or Manamune
to get that extra mana pool that we don't really have as
Cho'Gath and since you can get the blue buff you can spam your
Rupture and
Feral Scream to stack it up quick. -
boots of speed :UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 1 (does not stack with other Boots)
movement speed. Nothing more to say. -
malady :+25 Ability Power +50% Attack Speed UNIQUE Passive: Your basic attacks deal 20 bonus magic damage and reduce the target's Magic Resist by 6 for 8 seconds (effect stacks up to 4 times).
ability power and attack speed goes great with your
Vorpal Spikes especially in jungle. -
Mercury's Treads :+25 Magic Resist UNIQUE Passive: Enhanced Movement 2 (does not stack with other Boots) UNIQUE Passive: +35 Tenacity (Tenacity reduces the duration of stuns, slows, taunts, fears, silences, blinds and immobilizes. Does not stack with other Tenacity items.)
magic resist and tenacity, the tenacity can really save your *** when counter jungled or can give you more success rate in counter jungling -
rylai's crystal scepter :+500 Health +80 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: Dealing spell damage slows the target's Movement Speed by 35% for 1.5 seconds (15% for multi-target and damage-over-time spells).
to make sure your targets won't escape when ganking or just when trying to flee -
guardian angel :+68 Armor +38 Magic Resist UNIQUE Passive: Revives your champion upon death, restoring 750 Health and 375 Mana (5 minute cooldown).
to give you more survivability and give you that second chance in a team fight or when escaping giving your team maybe just enough time to get to you. -
Archangel's Staff :+400 Mana +25 Mana Regen per 5 seconds +45 Ability Power Passive: Grants Ability Power equal to 3% of your maximum Mana. UNIQUE Passive: Each time you use an ability, your maximum Mana increases by 4 (3 second cooldown). Bonus caps at +1000 Mana. Does not stack with Tear of the Goddess or Manamune
well by now your
Tear of the Goddess should be stacked up quite good and will give you quite the ability power boost when grading up into this, also more mana regeneration. -
lich bane :+350 Mana +80 Ability Power +30 Magic Resist +7% Movement Speed UNIQUE Passive: After using an ability, your next basic attack gains bonus physical damage equal to your Ability Power (2 second cooldown). Does not stack with Sheen or Trinity Force
movement speed and ability power plus the fact that it's passive (next basic attack deals bonus damage equal to 100% of ability power) works great with the fact that even though your a mage your also a melee character

Cho'Gath is an awesome champion to play with if you like tanking while dealing huge damage, I wish you lots of fun with playing and good luck. I'll update my guide with some features I can't add yet at the moment.
Also if you use my guide and got a good final score you can screen shot it and post it in comment I’ll use it and of course give you credit for the screen shot.

Up vote my build if you liked and only down vote if you really feel it's necessary, if you down vote comment why and I'll see if I can undo my mistakes .

I'd like to tank JhoiJhoi for her awesome guide on how to create guides and for her in-build line dividers her guide can be found here and i'd like to thank wRAthoFVuLK for his banner, his banner and sig shop can be found here
