Aatrox is said to be a counter to Darius. Not really. He actually poses zero threat for the Dunkmaster. Be aggressive 24/7, but be careful not to push, because bringing your minion wave under his turret might give him the chance to heal up a lot of his HP. Remember that you can grab him while he is mid-air casting his Dark Flight. If something happens and you start losing the lane (that is nearly impossible to happen unless you get babysitted) rush Randuin's Omen and by also using your Crippling Strike you will greatly decrease his damage output through reducing his ATK Speed. Do not fear this USELESS champion.
Akali
Akali gains a lot of power after 6, like you. The point is, that pre 6 she is ridiculously easy for you. Aggressive 24/7, you must kill her pre 6 at least one time, or you might have problems. But even post 6 you can duel her all-in or force her out of lane.
Azir
Azir's laning phase against melee attackers like you for instance is pretty strong. His Sand Soldiers are dangerous after he gets some AP and you should play defensively until 6. Then you start being aggressive on him. Consider rushing some Magic Resist items like Hexdrinker. However, you might be able to force him out of lane if he is not careful even pre 6 after a successful Apprehend and a good combo.
Cassiopeia
This serpent is actually a monster. She can kite you a lot and cause serious damage with a consecutive barrage of Twin Fangs. Rush Magic Resist items and dodge the areas she poisons. TP is good choice here, you won't need the ignite more than it. However, she is really squishy and if she is not careful you can kill her.
Cho'Gath
Cho'Gath has got that overpowered sustain, poke, CC and later on tankiness. You can deal with the three first, but if he gets the fourth you will get into trouble. Exploit your early game advantage.
Diana
Good Diana players will keep some distance from you and poke you. Try to dodge her poke and deny as much farm as possible. She definetely can't all-in you.
Dr. Mundo
Mundo is a mid to late game super tank with a good damage output. However, early game he can be stopped by lane bullies at toplane like Darius. Ignite him as soon as he casts his ultimate and dunk him in the face. Dodge his cleavers that he will probably spam by standing behind minions and everything will be alright.
Fiora
Fiora should be easy to deal with 9 of 10 times. Be aggressive and do not dive her unless you are 100% sure for the kill. Also, keep an eye of her Riposte so you do not cast Crippling Strike when it is activated and its damage gets blocked.
Gangplank
An experienced Gangplank would probably harass you without you being able to touch him often. You should consider building some armor so you can deal with his Parrrley. Remind your teammates to be careful of his Cannon Barrage which can help Gangplank and his team achieve gold and objectives.
Garen
Your nemesis. Garen has more natural sustain than you, more tankiness and he is mobile due to his Decisive Strike sadly unlike you. He can escape ganks easier than you so ward your territory consistently. Do not cast abilities except your ultimate of course when his Courage is activated. Note that your dunk is pretty stronger than his Demacian Justice due to the true damage and the shorter cooldown. Buy some armor pen and do not let him heal up with his passive. Lastly, when he casts Judgement do not run, apply to him more Hemorhagge stacks. He also outscales you a bit late game, so be careful.
Gnar
His main weapon against you is his insane CC and his tankiness in his mega form. Ward your place and force fight as soon as he is retransformed into little. Be careful not to be stunned at walls by his ult or you get rekt son.
Irelia
Irelia is feared among a lot of toplaners out there due to her insane sustain, true damage, gapcloser and tenacity. As you can see, she is not an easy opponent. After level 9 you might have some problems if you haven't got some advantage previously. Ask for a gank early and ward - as always. You outdamage her by a lot at early levels (1-4) so take advantage of it. Lastly, be careful when you have more hp than her as she can land a good stun on you and change the outcome of the fight. She is one of the few champions who might be stronger than you during mid-game.
Jarvan IV
A good Jarvan might get a kill on you or force you out of lane at levels 3-4 if you are not careful. His Dragon Strike and Demacian Standard Combo is destroying, even more when combined with his passive Martial Cadence. He is also good at setting up ganks so you know what to do. After 5, at latest point 6, level you outdamage him and you are really stronger. Just buying a Pickaxe will give you the advantage. Show him who dunks the best in this league.
Jax
Jax is a late game beast. However, you are an early-mid game beast so you can handle him at lane and at some skirmishes and delete him. When his Counter Strike is activated do not land autoattacks, just try to dodge it. More good news for you is that even if he gets one kill (or even two lol) he can't snowball. After 6 you are just better and from level 1 be aggressive 24/7.
Jayce
Jayce is a common pick nowadays because of his safe laning phase, strong early-mid game and poke. This guy is said to be one of the few real counters to you, though he is not, but you can do a lot of things to reduce his snowball potential. First of all, play defensively (yes as you just read), ward 24/7, buy a lot of pots and armor. Ask for some ganks and wait until 6. If you chose to take Ghost instead of Flash, as I do for this matchup, you should definetely go for an all-in and dunk him. That's it. Send him back to the beauty contest where he belongs or get rekt son.
Karma
Don't laugh. I have faced at least two times a Karma on toplane as Darius in platinum elo games. She is pretty strong due to her poke, shields and MS buffs (I think she has got a heal too wtf lol). Really broken vs a melee champ like you. Defense my dear friend, defense. Do not even try to touch her, especially if you understand she is good.
Kassadin
Kassadin belongs to midlane unless he goes Voyboy build and can duel tanky toplaners. However, not all Kassadins build tanky (why should they?) and that results in getting the enemy Darius fed. Kassadin is too squishy for you bro, you will find out yourself. Easy.
Kayle
Just laugh because you know what to expect. An OP mage with wings, shielding herself and her teammates to protect them from your dunk. She also has the ability of kiting you pretty hard, poking you, and sustaining through her Divine Blessing. Consider getting Ghost just like the Jayce matchup and you might manage to get some kills early on. However, later the nightmare begins and you have to use your brain - a lot. Or if she is good you will actually land 0 good ultimates at mid-late game teamfights - you will be useless. So build some magic resist items and some sustain and do your best.
Kennen
That little yordle is also SO annoying you can't have fun at all. Kite, poke, ridiculous MS, stuns etc. This is Kennen. He also outscales you so do not hope of getting blessed later. You are cursed. Unless you play smart, smart defense.
Kha'Zix
Hmmm... dat bug is pretty weak vs you early on, but if it manages in some way to get a bunch of CDR and evolves his Taste their fear it will be a bit dangerous. It has got some sustain, soft CC and escape of course, but only a few Kha'Zixs would be problem for you. Smash this nerfed bug underfoot.
Lee Sin
When he jungles, the blind monk is a threat early game because his ganks are just insane and he prepares his team for mid game fights in order to win the game. However, at top lane, there is nothing he can do against a Darius. Just try to dodge most of his Sonic Waves and everything will be alright. Aggressive all the time.
Lissandra
Lissandra's poke and CC might annoy you a bit, but definetely not scare you. Dodge her poke as much as you can, do nice grabs and ward your place. Build some sustain, magic resistance and attack damage (e.g. Hedrinker, Vampiric Screpter, Pickaxe) and whenever you find the opportunity, all-in her.
Lulu
So, Lulu has got that skillset which pull everyone's nerves. I would suggest playing defense until 6, taking Teleport and going mostly for defensive stats. Even if you get some kills on her, she will still have the utility so you should not risk it - you are not always sure about the outcome of an aggression, so play defense.
Malphite
Malphite is one of the tankiest champions in the game mostly due to his massive armor. Darius though deals mixed damage so its hard for Malphite to itemize correctly. Ward your place, rush Ravenous Hydra and try to kill him before he gets too much tanky. His damage output is also good and if he maxes Ground Slam you might lose some trades.
Maokai
Maokai has got nearly everything: tankiness, sustain, CC and good damage output. This tree might even kill you if you are not enough good. Do not push the lane at any reason, wait until 6 when your dunk counters his ultimate. If nobody gets a kill and you have the same farm (you should have more though) until 6 you win the lane unless you get ganked more than one time.
Mordekaiser
Can't really see how a Mordekaiser could defeat a Darius. You outdamage him and he is really vulnerable early game (squishy and no escape). He is also a natural pusher so the lane will nearly never be pushed under his turret and thats good for you. He also have zero CC so go and prove him that the D-man isn't feared of twisted spectres of his kind.
Nasus
Nasus's early game is one of the worst in the game and yours one of the best. Aggressive all day, do everything to prevent him from getting more Siphoning Strike stacks. He outscales you a lot however and that's why you should delete him entirely, meaning you deny him a lot of XP and farm/stacks as mentioned before.
Nidalee
Nidalee has got some mechanics to keep up with you, but you can deny her. Avoid getting marked as ''Hunted'' because her damage is greatly increased on you. You need smart Apprehends.
Nunu & Willump
Nunu is gonna do only two things to pull your nerves and maybe force you out of lane (you must be really bad to be killed by him). Healing himself with and harassing you with Ice Blast. Buy as soon as possible sustain and magic resistance items and wait until 6... Then dunk him. Watch out when walking towards bushes because of Absolute Zero.
Olaf
A good Olaf would rush some armor and sustain at the same time, so after a point of the game (9-10 level) start kicking your butt. But that will happen only if you do not exploit your advantage early game. You must play aggressively so you can deal with him later. He is a beast if he gets the correct build and maxes Vicous Strikes second. Careful.
Pantheon
Pantheon has got a really strong laning phase pre 6, so build tons of armor and health, buy a lot of sustain and wait till 6. Then you can kill him easily. Consider getting Teleport and not landing Crippling Strike when his passive is activated. Lastly, it wouldn't be bad if you started cloth 5 instead of Doran's shield, as you do most of the times in hard matchups. It's only about preference though, you choose.
Poppy
Because Poppy is not played a lot and a majority of players doesn't now her abilites, check them out. I must also clarify you must not let her Heroic Charge you into a wall, just like Vayne's Condemn. You outdamage her a lot, so go aggressive.
Quinn
Quinn deals MASSIVE damage mostly due to her passive, Harrier. She can also kite a lot and blind you. However, if you are good enough and pay some attention to one and only weakness of her, you might win the lane. Her weak spot is that when he is in mid-air Vault you can actually grab her and then she has no escape. Consider getting Teleport or even Exhaust (Yes, Exhaust). Ghost might be a good spell too. So play defense and wait till 6 when you can kill her, even if it's hard, you can.
Renekton
So you have to face the almighty Renekton, good. You are one of the few who can best this beast at laning phase. He has got more natural sustain, more tankiness after 6, more mobility due to Slice and Dice and he doesn't use mana, but fury. Pay attention to his fury bar, do not let him increase it and land some good Decimates on him. Lastly, 4/5 Renektons will rush tank items like Sunfire Cape so you know. You should get the advantage most of the times, because good Darius>good Renekton.
Rengar
Darius is said to be really strong against this kitty, even before the latest kitty's nerfs (after rework). This is FALSE. You should respect Rengar's damage output especially when he has his fury bar fulled because you can cause serious damage. Play carefully and kinda safe until 6 when you start being aggressive and maybe getting some kills on him.
Riven
Riven is arguably really dangerous, but not vs you (you are the D-man). Aggressive 24/7, build tons of AD (who cares about armor when you can dunk?) and punish her. Seriously, I have played more than 20 times as Darius versus Riven and I can't remember of a time that I lost my lane to her. She is easy.
Rumble
Rumble, Rumble, Rumble. Though not a common pick (or better common counterpick in our situation) that little yordle is really strong against you. After he gets some levels on his Flamesplitter you are condemned. Rush Hexdrinker and BEG for ganks. The only chance of you killing him is you grab him and kill him when he overheats. DANGER!!!
Ryze
Ryze will harass you until his endless mana points reach zero. Play defense, rush magic resist, ask for ganks and wait till 6 when you can all-in him. Ghost good option instead of Flash.
Shen
Don't know why and how, but this ninja while buying only tank items can deal a looooot of damage. Be careful not to get taunted under his turret and when he reaches 6 let your teammates know. If you see him casting his ultimate, grab him even if you need to burn Flash. Outfarm him and try to dunk him at levels 9-12. He shouldn't be able to KILL you though, only force you to go b.
Shyvana
Shyvana is strong enough to drop your health a lot during prolonged fights at levels 2-4, but even if do so, your Hemorrhage will drop hers even more (most of the times). After 6 you dominate her and win every fight. Notice she deals a lot of magic damage, so if you have to buy defensive items health is more important. But losing the lane is so hard, either you are bad or she is korean.
Singed
You will nearly always (9 out of 10 times) win the lane against a Singed. Advice: Do NOT chase him, only when you are sure (100%) you wil survive and he will die. However, yes thats good for Singed, if the game reaches late, you will probably lose because he outscales you SO MUCH. If you do not have late game carries in your team comp do not pick Darius vs Singed.
Sion
Sion just can't do much to stop you. Deny him farm and avoid good-charged Decimating Smashes. Ward your place as he has a lot of CC to set up good ganks.
Teemo
To make this clear, Teemo is not a counterpick to Darius. He might have some mechanics to manage to win, but he is not a counter. Get Ghost and Ignite, rush Hexdrinker and after level 3, be aggressive 24/7. Do not let him to kite you - good Apprehend's. After 6 you should be dominating the top lane.
Trundle
Trundle is a really versatile and good 1v1 champion. Nobody has the advantage in that lane in any stage of the laning phase, it depends on both you and Trundle experience and skill and your junglers. Ward your place and just try to make him lose as much as farm possible.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere as all players know (or so I believe) is a right-click champion who relies on his basic attacks to crit and deal damage. He also has got some sustain and that overpowered ultimate, the notorious Undying Rage. At levels 1-2 if Tryndamere manages to full his rage bar it is possible of you to get killed. However, before he builds it up, you must stay in fron of your minions and prevent him from attacking them. After level 3, you start partying on the toplane and getting kills. Do not dive him though under his turret. Easy lane if you are careful at levels 1-2.
Udyr
Udyr's skillset allows him to win a lot of trades with you. Keep your distance and play safe till 6. After 6, ward your place and start spamming Decimate. When his hp drops below 50%, grab him and all-in him. If he is good though, you will surely have some problems even after 6.
Urgot
That matchup is hard only if Urgot is good and experienced. He can poke you and kite you so hard, reduce your damage and he is really tanky. Play safe behind minions. If you understand that he is actually bad, start being aggressive. After 6 he definetely can't all-in you, but he is still enough strong to kill you after some poke.
Vayne
The late game monster Vayne tends to get bullied in laning phase, but not easily vs you. A good Vayne will be able to kite you a lot and maybe kill you. Whenever you land a good Apprehend try to deal to her as much damage as possible in the shortest time because she will probably Condemn you unless the skill is on CD. After she reaches 6 concider buying Vision Wards and you might get fed. If she is not good and can't kite you get fed easily anyways.
Vladimir
Vladimir should be treated as a weak early game champ whose only hope against you is his sustain. You outdamage him and can easily grab. Except his Sanguine Pool he has no escape so be aggressive 24/7. Keep an eye on his Tides of Blood stacks as he deals more damage and might result in pushing the lane under your turret. Whenever you see he has got 4 of these stacks go FULL aggressive with your Decimate as the lane won't be pushed at all and you will steal deal more damage. Get a Hexdrinker and good spell option is Ghost.
Volibear
Volibear is an easy matchup for you. Use your ignite when his passive Chosen of the Storm is activated and. I would suggest rushing Ravenous Hydra after buying a Giant's belt because Volibear is capable of melting squishy champions. So, do not let him farm and do not underestimate his damage (he deals a lot).
Warwick
After the latest Warwick's nerfs (patch 4.21 and I think one more I can't remember), you dominate him easily. Most Warwick players will rush armor items like Frozen heart or Sunfire Cape and will make it a bit less easy for you to beat them. However, you should win the lane.
Wukong
The monkey might be seem as strong as you, but after 6 it has no hope. Play smart until you get your devastating Noxian Guillotine and DUNK this monkey on the face.
Xin Zhao
Xin Zhao is the early game beast all champions should fear of. Even you should keep your distance and play passive until you get your dunk. Post 6 you should win all the fights, unless Xin is ahead of you by a lot because of a kill he got or more farm. Talon Strike op so build some armor, ward your place and wait... till 6.
Yasuo
Yasuo also might get a kill on you at level 2 if he is really good, but even if he does so, he gets rekt later. He can't fight with you, show no mercy.
Yorick
So Yorick, the gravedigger. The horror and nightmare of all toplaners. But do not cry when you see him picked and do not cry neither when he starts harassing you. Buy a lot of health AND mana potions and start trading with him after 6. In an all-in after 6 you can win. Yorick is really annoying, he can force out of lane but hasn't got the burst to manage to kill you. Stay back until 6 as I said before and ask for ganks. The lane is lost only if you make mistakes. Yorick counters all toplaners, but he is not undefeatable. You can defeat him, so go and do your best son. Keep in mind that a lot of people pick Yorick only because he is to be a counter to you, so if you are a good Darius, trust me you can win.
Zac
Zac's sustain when he is below 40-50% hp is really good, and he can spam Stretching Strike until you both reach that hp and make your life a bit hard. He can also knock you up 2 times in a row with Elastic Slingshot and Let's Bounce so he sets up good ganks. Ward your place, buy sustain and be aggressive. He is not hard, but neither easy.
Zed
Zed hasn't got the early game damage to stop Darius. Like seriously, he must be very good and you very bad if he wins the lane. Dodge his Razor Shurikens and if he stays really behind and just farming with them do not try to grab him or Decimate him unless he loses his position.
Zyra
Yes people I have faced a Zyra at top once. This matchup is similar with the Karma matchup. Do not try to touch Zyra, you will regret it. Build magic resistance items and ask for ganks. In mid-game teamfights (or better skirmishes) you are stronger - exploit it.
Hello guys, my summoner name is Juni0rBlack and I am a diamond elo player in EUNE. This is my first Mobafire guide. I am really good with a big range of champions and my best position is toplane. There are a lot of picks that I feel comfort with at toplane, but arguably Darius is by far my best pick. I have played with him over 250 RANKED games (LEL) so you can understand why. He is a fairly simple and easy champ to learn, a bit harder to master and even harder to be played in high elo ranked games. However, I really believe his potential is great in specific situations and knowing how to play him good might help you get a lot of LP. I hope this guide help you and maybe change your opinion about this champ who is being characterized as useless by many people of the community.
When to pick Darius?
When to pick Darius?
Darius shouldn't be picked before the enemy toplane champion is seen. There are some champions that will make his life pretty hard in lane and deny his early game potential (take a look at Vs. Champions section). Junglers that are awesome gankers (e.g. Vi, Jarvan IV, Lee Sin) pose a big threat on him because he has no escape. This is getting even more serious if the enemy toplaner has a lot of CC to set up good ganks or there is an enemy champ on mid who can roam easily and help their team (e.g. Twisted Fate, Katarina, Akali). So, if you don't know how to ward properly, watch the map and know when to expect enemy ganks do not pick Darius. Yours and enemy team's composition matters as well. If you feel that their late game is really strong for example and your team will be outscaled, choose a late game champ because Darius falls off after mid game. If they have a lot of CC and kiting potential, choose a more mobile champ. These are the main reasons that you should not always lock Darius in ranked games.
Pros / Cons
Pros / Cons
Pros
+ Lane bully + Mid game carry + Hard for enemies to itemize + True damage nuke + Pentakill machine + Great duelist
So what makes Darius special? Firstly, he bullies nearly everyone if he played correctly and his mid game is one of the best due to his insane damage output. Moreover, his skillset makes it hard for the enemy team to itemize against him properly because he actually deals magic damage (and only that) as well. In addition to the mixed reductionable damage he deals, his best weapon in his arsenal is the almighty Noxian Guillotine he is mostly known for. TONS of damage -> Pentadunk. Lastly, his Crippling Strike help him duel a lot of scary AD champions especially mid-late game.
Cons
+ No escape + No natural tankiness + Falls off late game + Kiteable and CC hurts
His only mobility given is the bonus movement speed from his passive and it's not enough. Except his high armor stats early game he is really squishy (he might not seems to be, but he is) and late game he is pretty bad, although not as bad as other champs. CC hurts of course and because of his short range skills and lack of mobility he is kiteable.
Runes
Runes
Runes
Precision
Press the Attack
Arcane Comet
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush
These are in my opinion the best runes for Darius because they buff his already strong early game by making him tanky and increasing his AD. They are the most common for AD bruisers at top lane anyways.
AND READ THIS: Do not laugh at the 1% critical chance mark that I put there because you never know, it might win you a marginal fight that you would lose. Many Korean challengers choose to have that 1% crit. chance mark, too. And I am talking to you seriously, one time I was playing Graves (love this champ) at botlane and crit 2 out of 5 consecutive auto attacks with that 1% crit. LOL!!

Spells
Spells
As solo top bruiser Darius there are 5 viable summoner spells.
1. Flash as an escape or chase tool through walls. Also for avoiding deadly abilities, making outplays and positioning for an Apprehend.
2. Ghost mostly for being able to chase and all-in champions who are prone to kite you in lane. Pretty good spell for Darius.
3. Ignite works incredibly well with your passive and ultimate, securing kills and dealing massive true damage accordingly. It also reduces healing on which rely a lot of toplane champions to escape or win all-in fights (e.g. Volibear, Dr. Mundo, Vladimir).
4. Teleport allows you to get back to lane fast if you are getting harassed or ganked often and roam. Roaming after you get some items will help your team get objectives and gold.
5. Exhaust for being able to duel dangerous top lane champions or later in need of protecting your carries.
Your primary spells are Flash and Ignite which you are going to choose most of the time. However, the other three spells are useful in some matchups as well.

Hemorrhage: Your basic attacks and damaging abilities each time apply one Hemorrhage stack, stacking up to 5 times. Enemies affected by Hemorrhage are dealt magic damage every 1.25 seconds for 5 seconds depending on the number of stacks, Darius's AD and level. For every bleeding champion, Darius gains 5% bonus movementspeed.
This passive is pretty strong. It will finish off low hp opponents, improve your damage output and it is the key for winning the lane. Try to apply as many stacks as possible and refresh the time that your targets bleed.
Decimate: Darius swings his axe dealing physical damage to all enemies within a 425-range area. Champions more than 270 units away from him are hit by the blade and take 50% additional damage.
Tips and Tricks
Always hitting with the blade of the axe to maximise your damage output.
Decimate is a good harassing tool but be careful not to push the lane and get ganked.
In teamfights, land it on as many enemy champions as possible to increase your movementspeed through Hemorrhage.
Crippling strike : Darius' next basic attack deals bonus physical damage and slows the target's movementspeed and attack speed for 2 seconds. Crippling Strike's base cooldown is reduced by 1 second for each stack of Hemorrhage on the target.
Tips and Tricks
It resets your autoattack timer, so use it right after you land an auto attack.
Try to apply at least 2 stacks of Hemorrhage before using it in order to reduce its CD.
Do not forget to use it on turrets.
Apprehend: Darius passively gains armor penentration and upon activation he pulls all enemies in front of him.
Tips and Tricks
Keep in mind that Apprehend has the best range of all Darius' abilities (550).
Try to be unpredictable - grab them when they do not expect it.
You can also use this ability to interrupt channels and attack animations.
Noxian Guillotine: Darius leaps to an enemy champion at 460 range and strikes a devastating blow, dealing massive true damage. For each Hemorrhage stack on the target, Noxian Guillotine deals 20% bonus damage. If Noxian Guillotine kills the target, it can be recast within the next 20 seconds. This can occur multiple times.
Tips and Tricks
Apply as many Hemorrhage stacks as possible for maximum damage.
20 seconds are enough to recast your dunk, but keep a look at the remaining time.
Laning phase, Mid game and Late game
Laning phase, Mid game and Late game
Early game: In the early game aka laning phase you must be really observant, exploiting your opponent's weaknesses and mistakes as well as watching out for enemy ganks. Do not forget to buy wards at least 1 out of 2 times you go b. Build and play properly depending on your enemy and scale as well as you can into mid-game.
Mid game: The stage of the game that you should be considered as a high priority target for the enemy team. Carry your team to victory by helping them achieve objectives like dragons, turrets and kills. Focus the enemy carries and do not steal all the kills because if you do not finish the game fast enough, you will put your team behind. Remember to stay back at first and let your tank engage because while you are very strong, enemy team is able to take you down.
Late game: You are now becoming weak, but there are still champions that you outscale. Stay close to your carries and protect them, especially from enemy assassins, by using Apprehend and Crippling Strike. If you trust them a lot, you could even tank some damage for them in order to do their job.
