Introduction

Introduction

Greetings, im Palenozord, welcome to my first ever MOBAFire guide!. It will be focused on Rengar! He is a versatile champion who excels at fighting near bushed areas thus making him very proficient ganker and jungler. If you feel like playing an stalker champion hes your kind of guy. His signature ability - the Pounce component of his passive is easily one of the most fun aspect of this champion, defining Rengar as an ultimate predator, throw in crazy good snowballing item, well rounded kit and you get amazingly fun champion at your disposal. Variety of his gameplay options make him excellent addition to almost any team.

Note that this guide is still in progress and i will be adding new stuff constantly, be sure to return to check updates!

IMPORTANT

Cheat sheet above is only to give you general idea of what's good for Rengar, not what will work every game. You should always build ANY champion according to situation. I don't always build him like this and neither should you!

Few words about Rengar himself

Rengar is a big, fluffy kitty, with braided hair and knack for homemade jewelry. He also has unusual hobby of collecting teeth. Oh, and those teeth were ripped them from his enemies corpses, now he wears them as a necklace. Just as his smaller feline cousins loves to jump on all sort of things, he also enjoys it, though Rengar prefers fragile frames of lesser creatures such as raccoons, yordles and carries over furniture.

Whenever you you draw sadistic pleasure from stalking unaware champions, laughing as they pointlessly struggle to run away, or brutally tear them apart before they even realize whats going on, or maybe driving them paranoid with lethal game of cat and mouse, You will love playing Rengar.

  • Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed Movement speed is essential for Rengar, esspecially when playing him as a roamer. Higher speed simply makes your life easier, be it last hitting, kiting, chasing, poking or dodging skill shots. I prefer bonus mobility over damage but it's a matter of preference.
  • Greater Quintessence of Desolation Armor Penetration works great over whole game duration and always viable option. They work great in jungle, lane or when roaming. Dealing almost true damage early is invaluable.
  • Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage For early game Attack Damage boost. Allows you to last hit easier, and harass harder, however they really fall off rather fast. Still significant boost for your early game, mostly due to sick AD ratios on your Savagery
  • Greater Quintessence of Ability Power Option only when playing AP Rengar a bit of bonus damage to your Battle Roar

  • Greater Mark of Desolation They increase value of your Attack Damage and stack great with other ArPen items too. With just The Brutalizer and bonetooth necklace on top of masteries and runes you will gain up to 50 Armor Penetration, throw in Black Cleaver and you do true damage to almost anyone.
  • Greater Mark of Attack Damage Early game they will benefit you more than Desolation, due to whooping 2.5 AD ration on Savagery however they will fall off quickly.
  • Greater Mark of Attack Speed Since jungling speed is one of Rengar weakest points, these could a good option. Require testing, i don't own those tough so if someone could leave his thoughts on them i would be grateful/.
  • Greater Mark of Magic Penetration For AP Rengar only, slightly better than flat AP.

  • Greater Seal of Armor I'm a big fan of these runes because they are very helpful when it comes to better sustain your lane. They will let you to shrug off some harass and minions attacks during trades. For a jungler those seals are not negotiable!
  • Greater Seal of Vitality Bonus HP is very noticeable and shine during Mid Game. Decent choice for solo top or roamer.
  • Greater Seal of Ability Power You probably now this already, these are for AP build only

  • Greater Glyph of Magic Resist Equivalent of Armor Seals, improves your sustain, letting you farm, harass and defend more efficiently
  • Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist Same as above but scales of your level and get more effective than flat MRes after level 9. Reason why i recommend scaling over flat is because you shouldn't take much magic damage early and later these will make you much beefier.
  • Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction Cooldown Reduction another great stat for Rengar, it let's him spam abilites faster resulting in faster ferocity generation. Great for jungling and very solid option for any build
  • Greater Glyph of Ability Power Guess what? Those are for AP build, duh

Summoner Spells

Top tier

Ignite
Works wonders over whole game adds up even more burst to your arsenal, as well as shutting down victim regeneration. As Rengar you will hunt down fleeing enemies a lot, sometimes all you have to do is to throw Ignite from save distance and watch them burn.

Exhaust
Versatile, amazing spell for any champion. Can be used both offensively and defensively, adds some nasty CC effect at your disposal. It's great over whole game duration allowing you to stick to your target like glue, shut down enemy damage output and scraps away they mobility. Using this spell, you can also catch up to or escape from enemies to obtain kills or saves other allies, including yourself.

Flash
This spell is so versatile it hurts, as Rengar lacks escaping tool fits him perfectly. It as countless usage options. Be it offensive or defense it's one of the most powerful Summoner Spell on any champion. Use it for gap closing, tower diving, flash through walls, get out of sticky situations. Usage options of this spell are countlessUsing this ability WILL NOT break your stealth!

Ghost
Extra mobility always comes in handy, with Ghost you will be able to outrun any champion. Whenever it's life threatening situation, you're out of position when your team started big fight or you have problems with enemy getting away, just pop your Ghost and say goodbye to all these problems. In addition it provides you much more mobility than flash when you're able to use your passives' Pounce. Using this ability WILL NOT break your stealth!

Smite
This is obviously a must pick for junglers. Not only it helps you jungle faster than you could with any other spell, it also grants you amazing buff controls. I can't even stress how important Smite is. While some champions can get away with jungling without it, Rengar can not, period.

Honorable Mentions

Spells below might be good under some circumstances, but i did not test them or they are simply inferior to other picks.

Teleport
Teleport gives simply amazing map control. Teleporting on wards and other invisible/hidden objects allows you to gank very effectively. With this spell you can push or defend wherever it's needed. Also works great when backdooring(although i usually don't approve it), simply put ward inside enemy base and teleport to it when they are away. Rengar is amazing demolitionist, and you will be able to cause great havoc in enemy base.

Heal
Heal is very strong right now very overlooked. During Early Game it's probably the strongest spell, lets you top almost anyone in 1vs1 fight, escape ganks and provides amazing lane control. Coupled with empowered Battle Roar it gives huge heal at your disposal. Might save you and/or your teammates. It's also good to bait enemies into towers.

Cleanse
Rengar is allergic to CrowdControl, this spell solves the problem and is simply amazing. However it's advanced spell, requiring very short reaction time and is very hard to use to full potential. You want to remove CC in instant it landed on you but at the same time you need to factor in a lot of different things, less experienced players should drop it in favor of other spell.

Clairvoyence
Woot?! Clairvoyance! Even though next to noone uses this spell anymore(at least in normal games/my elo range), it's still strong team oriented spell. It gives your team free map awareness and let's you track your enemy's jungler. Protect people from ganks, let's your team move as a group without stumbling into a trap. But why would anyone pick it on Rengar? Aside from pointers above, to take advantage of his passive obviously, it really allows you to perform some amazing tricks while running through the jungle, it's quite fun. It's here only because it deserved to be mentioned.

Skill Breakdown

Unseen Predator
(Passive)

space
His innate consists of two parts:
Ferocity once you get used to his resource bar you will love it. You want to spam abilities whenever possible to build it as fast as possible. Your Ferocity enhanced abilities got no cooldown and available to use as soon as you reach 5 bars.
Pounce in my opinion one of the best passives in game, makes Rengar terrifc ganker/assasin. It's amazing for chasing, initiating, kiting or simply running away. Mastering it will separate great from decent players.
Cooldown: none
Range: 600/750(with 9 stacks on bonetooth necklace

Tips & Tricks

  • It fades off after 0.5sec after leaving bush, if you move fast enough you will be able to Pounce into dragon or baron through walls
  • During teamfights try to utilize it to dodge skill-shots and kite those annoying bruisers by Pouncing around
  • Ward or have your team ward jungle, ability to leap between neutrals camp will improve your juking and chasing potential greatly
  • When Pouncing out of stealth provided by Thrill of the Hunt you can Pounce twice if u click fast enough, this allows you to cover pretty large distance when chasing/running away

spacespace

Savagery Q
space
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Damage: 30 / 55 / 80 / 105 / 130 (+100% of Attack Damage)
Attack Speed Bonus: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 %
Range: melee
Ferocity Empowerment: additional +150% Attack Damage and +100% Attack Speed bonus

Savagery is your main ferocity builder. Its damage alone is decent but when you combo it with Ferocity enhanced Savagery it will sky rocket, allowing you to virtually one-shot people. People really seems to overlook bonus AS provided by this ability, it works wonders when pushing towers, clearing jungle/minion waves and give you solid chunk of DPS in team fights. When maxin Savagery first it will give you the highest possible damage, when you don't have to worry about beign squishy or low CC. During early/mid game it will make you hit like a truck.

Tips & Tricks

  • Bonus Attack Speed from Savagery and its empowered version stacks up to 150%, increasing his burst even further
  • Usage of this ability resets your auto-attack timer, use to your advantage in small skirmishes by timing your combo immediately after landing auto-attack
  • Activating this ability won't break stealth from Rengar ultimate
  • You can surprise enemies while on low HP by luring them in once you have 4 Ferocity bars and burst them down from 70% withing split second

spacespace

Battle Roar W
space
Cooldown: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 seconds
Magic Damage: 75 / 120 / 165 / 210 / 255 (+1.0 per ability power)
Bonus Armor & Magic Resist: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 for 3 seconds
Range: 400
Ferocity Empowerment: In addition will heal Rengar for 15% of total HP

Battle Roar is your defensive option, during laning increases your dueling potential greatly. It's obvious choice for AP Rengar but works very well with every build. Players neglect maxing it as viable option due to heal not scaling with ranks, but +60 armor/magic res on top of heavy magic damage and shorter CD during early game will let you take on almost any champion, it's also great tool for clearing waves.

Tips & Tricks

  • Try to save it to shrug off initial burst in teamfights
  • Heal from Empowered Battle Roar will work even if you don't hit any enemies with it
  • Using Battle Roar and Empowered version works great in jungle provides great sustain as well as fast clear time, use it after 3sec because resistances doesn't stack
  • Try to maintain bonus resistances when using it's empowered version, they won't stack so use it in intervals to prolong they duration

spacespace

Bola Strike E
space
Cooldown: 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 / 8 seconds
Physical Damage: 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240 (+0.7 per bonus attack damage)
Slow: 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 %
Range: 575
Ferocity Empowerment: Will immobilize target for 1 second and apply slow for remaining 1,5 seconds

Bola Strike is your only form of CC, while in 1v1 situations will fall off behind Savagery and Battle Roar, it really shines during ganks and team fights. While slow duration is rather short its very potent. When coupled with empowered Bola Strike, it turns out into one of the strongest snares in game, allowing you and your team catch up with the victim easily. When pushed back it may also serve as ranged poke and last hitting tool, allowing you to harass and farm from relatively safe distance.

Tips & Tricks

  • It's devastating during ganks, immoblize+heavy slow over 5sec should be more than enough to secure most kills
  • Don't use it for sheer damage alone, it's slow component is too great to waste
  • Builds Ferocity while kiting, this may allow to punish overextending chasers

spacespace

Thrill of the Hunt R
space
Cooldown: 120 / 85 / 50 seconds
Movement Speed Bonus: 10 / 15 / 20 %
Reveal Range: 2000 / 3000 / 4000
Stealth Duration: 7 seconds (10 seconds with 14 stacks on Bonetooth Necklace)

Multi purpose ultimate. Makes Rengar stealthed, while revealing enemies in large area, rapidly fills Ferocity bar and increases his movement speed significantly. Versatility of this skill allows to use it both defensively and offensively.

Tips & Tricks

  • Using items or abilities such as Youmuu's Ghostblade, Savagery and Ghost/ Flash won't break stealth, this allows you to attain huge mobilty bonus(other items and summoner spells require further testing)
  • Use it's reveal component to setup ganks and catch lone champions
  • This ultimate is great escape mechanism, it has 2sec fade time though so requires some timing to be effective
  • During teamfights use it to bypass hostile tanks and bruisers to assassinate squishes
  • If you use it to reveal enemy stealthers remember attacking them will interrupt reveal

Skill Sequences

If you play wizard Rengar feel free to skip this section, you always want to max W first, hope it saved your time.

There is an ongoing debate on which ability should be maxed first, this guide will not tell you which one is superior. Each of Rengar abilities is viable, each have good damage, each is unique and each serves different purpose. Im not gonna tell you that you should level-up the same ability in every game, i want to encourage you to try to find your own mix. Just as you buy items to counter enemies, exploit their weaknesses or take advantage of your strong points, you should carefully consider which ability will give you the biggest advantage after each level-up.

There are many different factors which should be considered in every game, thus im not able to cover every possible scenario. I can however, lay the basics.

Obviously you want to level up your Ultimate whenever possible, higher movement speed bonus, wider range of it's reveal component and shorter CD are all invaluable. You want use it as often as possible.

Deciding which ability to level up is tricky, but after a bit of experience with Rengar you should know pretty well what will benefit you the most. Generaly You want to level:

Savagery

when:
-snowballing, it's perfect option to secure your dominance after succesful early game
-facing easy lane opponent such as Nasus
-you need heavy burst and can rely on your teammates CC
-you want more pushing power
sp
sp
sp
sp
sp
sp
SPACE

Battle Roar

when:
-facing opponent(s) with heavy harass and/or armor(i.e. Darius)
-enemy has some way to neglect your physical burst
-you need to be tanky during team fights
-you want to mitigate heavy burst champions
sp
sp
sp
sp
sp
SPACE

Bola Strike

when:
-your jungler got high damage but lacks hard CC/gap closer(i.e. Shyvana)
-your team is low on CC
-you will need to peel off enemies training your squishes
-you need some way to secure kills due to enemies having high mobility
-youre jungler/roamer and beign concerned about CC more than DMG
sp

Remember it's not mandatory to max an ability ASAP, theres nothing in the way if you think leveling all abilities simultaneously will benefit you more. In fact it gives you more versatility over maxing an ability. In every game you will find yourself in different situations, deciding which ability should be empowered with Ferocity is what separates good from bad Rengar players, if situation doesn't favor your maxed ability you will suffer from dimnished efficency. It's all situational and i strongly recommend to try out different skill sequences, no seriously feel free to experiment during games, dont blindly follow cheat sheet.

Itemization - Bonetooth Necklace

This item deserves individual section

bonetooth necklace Bonetooth Necklace is Rengar exclusive item, its incredibly cost-effective and fits very well into his hunter theme. Also turns our feline pupil into badass tooth fairy who not only pulls teeth straight from kidschampions mouths but steal their money as well!
For 800gold we receive:
10(+2 per level) Attack Damage totaling 46 AD at level 18. That's right 1AD more than B. F. Sword for less than half of it's price! On top of that it's will give you significant boost after successful hunting:
  • 3 trophies will provide you with additional 5% Cooldown Reduction and 10 Armor Penetration
  • 6 trophies result in 25 bonus FLAT movement speed, as long as you can manage those stacks this makes Rengar one of the fastest champions in game.
  • 9 trophies increase Pounce distance from your passive by 150, this open whole new spectrum of creative plays while prowling in the jungle.
  • 14 trophies is your ultimate goal, it offers buff to your Thrill of the Hunt increasing it's duration up to 10 seconds and causing your next ability to generate additional Ferocity

Summarizing, it's one the best cost-efficient item in the game even if you can't pile up your trophies. Buy it in EVERY game! Although it will lose some of it's shine toward end game, there's nothing in the way to sell it and replace with stronger item, by the time it' come to it, bonetooth necklace will surely return it's cost with surplus

Hidden Passive
With the release of Kha'Zix hidden passive of bonetooth necklace was impremented. When facing your Kha'Zix, both of you will get a buff named "The Hunt Is On" champion who first kills his nemesis will trigger hidden passive, assists count as well. For Rengar it turns your necklace into Head of Kha'Zix, which is equivalent of fully stacked bonetooth necklace, it will no longer lose effectiveness on death. You will gain equivalent of 14 stacks despite how many you have at the moment of killing Kha'Zix.

Exact conditions to active "The Hunt Is On" aren't known yet but Rengar must have his bonetooth necklace and Kha'Zix must have 3 evolved abilites.

Itemization

Starting Items

Not much of an option here:
+3x I strongly recommend those whenever you're laning, jungling or roaming. Better mobility allows you to perform better in any aspect of game. Always a strong option. As a jungler take those only if you're going for early ganking

Good choice for easygoing lane, bonus Attack Damage increases your harassing power.

+5x Good for jungling or when laning against some strong harasser like Riven or Pantheon, they will give you nice sustain and help you deal with early damage.

Roaming - Playstyle Section

After playing few games as Rengar i was shocked to notice that so many players don't know what is roamer, leave it be how to play one or what his role is. I'll start with some explanations.
So what is Roamer?
Put simply, a Roamer is a high risk high reward hero who, rather than playing in a set lane, roams the map ganking other lanes. They are mostly used as part of ganking strategies to help put early pressure on the other team, although the metagame does not currently favor the practice.

Advantages of A Roamer:
Frees up a second solo lane
Allows you to gank dangerous opponents effectively to help keep them down
Puts pressure on the opposing side, as they can never be entirely sure that they're safe
Greater map and jungle control than most of junglers
Disadvantages of A Roamer:
Roamers are generally under-leveled and under-farmed
Your second solo may suffer in a 2v1 laning situation
If your Roamer is unsuccessful, you are likely to be at a disadvantage for the remainder of the game
Your team should be built around the Roamer - having a poorly chosen lanes can cause the loss of the game. This makes Roaming in pubs a risky business
You will be called troll, fail jungler, etc.

spacespace

Rengar ganking potential is tremendous, he able to almost one-shot people at level 1 and he still wins early fights without putting much effort in it.

Here are some cardinal rules you want to stick to:

  • Never try to gank without 3 bars of Ferocity(4 are mandatory on lower levels)
  • Be pattient, dont just leap out of bushes immediately coordinate with your team mates, let them know you're ready and let them make a setup
  • Pay attention to map, constantly look for gank opportunities and be warry of enemies movement(especially junglers!)
  • Help your team, buy some wards, report misses cover lanes while team mates go shoping/regen etc.
  • Be unpredictable, strike where they expect you the least
  • Don't feed, 1 for 1 trades aren't permitted

There are many options to start game with roamer and its up to you and your team mates creativity to gain advantage over enemy team.
This example cover the most basic since it's doable in solo queue.

Level 1 gank

  • After purchasing starting items we rush to neutral camp closest to our first target(pick it carefuly considering summoner spells, probable items, masteries, abilities).
  • At 1:40 min mark we start stacking Ferocity viaHIT AND RUN as shown in this video.
  • Hide in bushes and wait for kill opportunity(Rengar can burst down almost any champion in split second at this point so you can go pretty much rambo)
  • Stack Ferocity up to 4 and you're ready for next gank

spacespace

Early Game

Early game is crucial when roaming, if you're successful you will most likely snowball and carry your team to victory. It's high risk high reward play style and it will be much more efficient if you do this with team you know you can trust.

After buying your starting items( Boots+pots or Doran's Blade you should carefully chose your first victim. Take into consideration potential lane partners, summoner spells and champion abilities. Obvious choices are low mobility enemies, squishes and aggressive nukers. Avoid stunners, high mobility or just though, if you have team mate with hard CC probability of success increase drastically.

This map shows the best spots to stack your ferocity with arrows linking them to preferred lane to gank. Obviously this routes are for blue team, red team has the opposite.
1. Your safest bet, bot lane will usually consist of AD carry and support, you will also have 2 team mates to help you, use bush to your advantage. However this is also most obvious place for gank and might be warded.
2. If your mid champion have some strong CC, or enemy has no flash/ghost feel free to rush to this spot. Also allows to gank bot lane a bit later but u must remain cautious of enemy jungler movements.
3. Dangerous spot when enemy team has a jungler whos not starting at blue buff, but allows to gank top and mid lane depending on situation.
4. Similar to 3rd but allows faster top lane gank, which is easiest to recover if unsuccessful. Watch out when moving through yellow marked spot!

After your first gank depending on how successful it was you might want to rush to another lane(after stacking ferocity) or stay in lane for some last hits and experience. Keep ganking and roaming as much as possible, your presence alone will keep your enemies at disadvantage. Sometimes after failed gank it's good idea to try it again after dozen seconds, players will rarely expect it. You might also try hunting for enemy jungler. At level 4 game becomes much easier, thx to your Battle Roar you will be able to clear jungle camps fast and keep you healthy.
At your first back it would be perfect to grab bonetooth necklace and upgrade your boots. From now on ganking will be even more rewarding. If you had bad start take Long Sword+ Ruby Crystal and focus on jungling. This should help you recover. Otherwise by now you and your team should outleveled and outfarmed your enemies. After reaching level 6, your ganks will be much easier.
Mid game starts after obtaining your core.

For Mid and Late game sections scroll below for your chosen playstyle.

Laning - Playstyle Section

Early Game

You preferably want and probably get Solo Top lane, however Rengar is 100% viable in dual lane, so don't worry if you won't get solo.
Starting items should be chosen depending on what champion/champions will be faced. Cloth Armor+5x Health Potion is strong choice against hard hitters/harassers like Riven or Pantheon. For tied lanes you can get a Doran's Blade but i prefer Boots+3x Health Potion.

Remember to help your jungler, he gains faster clear time and you get bonus ferocity, its a win-win. If you got no jungler/he has different route than wolves/blue or you simply went for dual lane stack it on neutrals by hitting an ability and running away(as portrayed in section above) Bonus ferocity will let you put amazing pressure during first contact with enemy.

In lane focus on last hitting and build up Ferocity, landing your double Savagery should be enough to push anyone back. Hiding in bushes is great way to prevent enemy harass, and you can still last hit pretty well thank to your passive. Spend your Ferocity to harass enemy and hopefully out-zone them, you should always stick close to the bush though, abuse Cooldown-less Pounce from your passive! This is scenario for 1vs1 match-up, when facing 2 enemies you will obviously need to play defensively and wait for your jungler's ganks or exploit their mistakes.

Depending on situation your first recall should get one of: Phage, 2x Long Sword for The Brutalizer or Ruby Crystal//[heart of gold]+ some potions(if having sustain issues) and a ward of sight when cornered. Once you have enough gold get your bonetooth necklace or upgrade Ruby Crystal into [heart of gold] a component of Phage. One of the top towers will probably wont last much longer.

Mid game will start when either you or your opponent/opponents take down top tower or both mid and bot towers gone. Mid and Late game section is covered below depending on your playstyle.

Matchup Section

Champions in alphabetical order for better navigation. On left you have your opponent portrait, skills leveling priority(note that this is only for cursory glance only for better insight you should read skill sequences section) and difficulty of the lane. Middle contains explanation and on right you have preferred items against specific champion.

Easy
sp Akali
You easily out-trade her early, be as aggressive as possible. Shes not really a threat to you, at least until lvl 6. Utilize your passive, if possible last hit from bushes and harass with your Q+Pounce combo followed by immediate return to bushes. Your kit counters her in every aspect, mitigate her burst with your Battle Roar, with Savagery + Pounce you can harass from nice distance if she decide to fight back use Battle Roar and proceed to dump your auto-attacks and abilities on her. Avoid fighting in Twilight Shroud and be wary of enemy jungler movements.
sp

Medium
sp Cho'Gath
To be honest im yet to play against Cho'Gath once again play aggressively. Cho is squishy early on and his sustain depends on how successful he is with last hitting. Force early engages and you should be able to push him out of lane. Your success depend mostly on how well you dodge his Rupture, therefor Boots are mandatory. He will start to catch up with every level and since 6 he will be BIG problem(literately) Deny him his farm since level 1 and he won't be much of a threat later.
sp

Medium
sp Darius
Darius is one scary champion, many players are scared by his sight alone and make a mistake of playing too defensively. You want to put as much pressure as possible, Darius kit however makes it problematic. His armor gain is among highest(if not THE highest) in game, deals mixed damage and is quite hard to get away from. Max Battle Roar first, your bola/savagery damage are joke to him. On the other hand your double casted W deals sick damage, while buffing your defenses and restoring your health(getting used to its range will take some time but it pays off). You will NEED Boots. Open on him with 3 ferocity: open with autoattack(prefarably with pounce) followed with Battle Roar then, depending on his reaction: if he back off-punish him with E>W>Q combo/if he decide to fight you, throw Savagery and run away from him most likely you will get pulled by Apprehend, dont panic and throw Bola Strike to shake him off hit him with your empowered Battle Roar to regain lost HP and neglect damage from his passive. If you pulled it off correctly you won your small skirmish and earned yourself few seconds of free harassment as Darius without his pull is a joke, just hit(pounce) and run, spamming skills. DON'T LET HIM STACK HEMORRHAGE or else he will get upper hand. This matchup is all about how well you know your limits and use abilities.

Jungling - Playstyle Section

Start with Cloth Armor+5 Health Potion unless you go for an early gank, if so get Boots instead.

Standard route:

Wraiths=>Red Lizard=>Gank/Golems=>Wraiths=>Wolves=>Blue Golem=>Gank

If you have leash, great if not - no big deal. Start with big wraith and hit your Q immediately after first auto-attack, spam your Savagery on every CD and last wraith should die leaving you at 4 Ferocity. Now move to Red. Open on big Lizard in the same way auto-attack followed by immediate Q, repeat this on every Savagery Cooldown to reset your melee swing. You will still want to pop potion and smite here. After killing large and one small lizard, leave last one to stack Ferocity up to 4 at this point you're free to gank or continue jungling.
Usually it's good idea to let your Mid/Top lane champion get Blue buff, you should consider it. From level 3 on jungling will become far easier thank to Battle Roar

First back to base should be after obtaining +1000g to get your Madred's Razors and Boots.
With those you can clear jungle pretty fast, focus on jungling but pay attention to map and punish overextending enemies.

Since level 6 you will be much more aggressive, you ultimate lets you bypass normal wards to some extent so it will be much harder to defend from your ganks. The only tricky part is deciding which ability you should empower with Ferocity. Normally if you have team mates with strong CC, Savagery is the way to go, otherwise throw Bola Strike letting your team catch up. You want to gank at every CD of Thrill of the Hunt
Note that Rengar is exceptional pusher as his Savagery deals bonus damage to towers. Sometimes all it takes is single gank to bring tower down from full HP.

Keep nice mix of ganking, jungling and pushing, completing Core items will start your Mid Game, this section will be covered below depending on your chosen playstyle.

Assassin - Playstyle Section

Early game was covered in sections above as they will vary depending on your chosen path: Roaming, Laning or Jungling

Mid Game

Mid game will consist of ganking, small skirmishes, dragon control, ganking, farmin and ganking in that order.
Remember that if you did not buy Phage you gonna need Red Lizard Buff the best option to get it is naturally kill previous wielder of it but don't bet on it. Unless you got fed you will need some kind of slow for reliable ganks.

Mid game team fights are where Rengar really starts to shine, your power peaks right now so use it to your advantage.

During team clashes you will usually want to save your ultimate either as defensive CD or to hunt fleeing enemies. Wait for tank to initiate and try to Pounce above their beef into squishes. Don't get obsessed in targeting squishes though, your damage is high enough to tear almost any champion and Battle Roar will let you to take some punishment. If you get focused, pop ultimate, it can get you out of sticky situation, remember it has fade time though. Thrill of the Hunt might be also used offensively, by popping it immediately after burning your Ferocity, wait for full Ferocity bar and unleash your full combo.
Remember that even when on low hp full Ferocity bar makes Rengar significantly stronger. His burst is enough to bring most squishes from 70% to 0 before they realize what's going on, use this to lure overconfident players into a trap. Getting hold of what are you capable of and what not will surely take some time(and inevitably, deaths) but once you master it you will be able to turn any situation into your advantage.

Late Game

While your damage and burst potential are great, you will notice drastic drop in your survivability when CCed.
If you have good initiator like amummu or anti-initiator like Alistar, you will have the luxury of using your ultimate as in mid game. If not you will need to use it offensively in most situations.
Most common strategy is to pop Thrill of the Hunt, wait for 5 bars of ferocity, get into position and activate your Savagery + Youmuu's Ghostblade(won't break your stealth) followed by immediate opener on your victim and use your Savagery again if you did not pick a bruiser or god forbid tank, he should be dead before anyone realize, bonus movement speed from ghostblade will most likely let you get away if you picked too much attention or move on another squishy.

Don't ever initiate, NEVER. Let tanks do their job and focus on yours which is wrecking carries. When team fight start you want to take down enemy carry ASAP, however you can't rush it mindlessly. Sometimes you will need to wait for enemies to blow their CC away. Assassin Rengar can rape any squishy in blink of an eye but if you get CCed you will fail miserably.
Sometimes you will be able to Pounce their carry from the bush, look for and exploit those situations, your ultimate will come in handy later on.

Quick tip if enemies don't have an oracle try to move into melee range instead of Pouncing from max range. Nothing gives you more unwelcome attention than loud roar preceding sight of a big, fat cat flying across half of a map to rape poor little Teemo, god i hate him so much.

If you managed to kill that pesky carry, congrats you just lifted whole lot of pressure from your team, now lay your sights on any remaining squishy, rushing for CC heavy champions might be also good idea unless they we are talking about super beefy champion like Alistar. Stay away from tanks until others enemies die.
ALWAYS try to use bushes to your advantage, Pouncing over the battle field will discourage people from targeting you and is great to kite bruisers and avoiding skill shots.

Your ultimate since level 16 has pretty low CD especially when Cooldown Reduction is stacked. You might want to pop it occasionally and look for lone champions. Other than that you should focus on ganking, Baron/Buff control, ganking, farming and ganking whenever possible.

Bruiser - Playstyle Section

Early game was covered in sections above as they will vary depending on your chosen path: Roaming, Laning or Jungling

Mid Game

During Mid game Rengar effectiveness peaks, you want to take your part in every fight. Even though you're not a tank sometimes it's good idea to initiate, especially if their team is out of position. If possible save your ultimate to chase fleeing opponents or refill your Ferocity after your combo.
Your job in team fights is to bring down the most threatening enemy ASAP(note that this doesn't exactly mean a carry).
Your presence alone will be disruptive to their team so you want to stay in fight as long as possible. This translates roughly to Ferocity management and is something one must learn by them self via practice. I can however give you some starters:
As a bruiser i don't recommend opening with full Ferocity, preferably start with 2 bars. After Using your first set of abilities you will have full resource bar anyway, in addition better insight at situation. In example: when taking heavy damage use your heal, enemy assassin going for squishes? root him with your Bola, when you don't have to worry about protecting your teammates or dying yourself nuke someone with your Savagery.
Remember that Battle Roar gives you huge boost to your defenses but only for a short time, try using it to mitigate burst and high damage spells.
When running away utilize you Bola Strike and Battle Roar, prioritize using bola if chased by one bursty champion and roar otherwise. With full ferocity you might want to use your double Savagery combo to burst down unsuspecting chaser, it's risky but works quite often.

When having problem in surviving fights due to a lot of Burst damage or CC rush Frozen Mallet, otherwise get B. F. Sword and work for your Bloodthirster. You need both of them to stay effective and if you manage to get them fast you will wreck enemy team easily.
Aside from small team fights you should focus on ganking when possible and farming while not. Buff/Dragon/Baron control may make or break the game so be sure to keep an eye on them.

Late Game

Late game your power will start to deteriorate, and you will need to rely on your team much more. Remember you are not a tank, don't initiate, your job is to disrupt enemy carries from doing damage.

If you know fight is about to start, you want to save Thrill of the Hunt to chase down fleeing enemies but if they got strong initiation with some heavy AoE CC, it might be good idea to rush stealthed into enemy squishes when fight break out. In this scenario you want to put as much pressure as possible, forcing defensive CDs and shutting down enemy DPS output.
Try not to wander off too far from your team or you may find yourself in though situation. Mix offensive and defensive use of your Ferocity, peel off enemies focusing your carry with Bola Strike and perma-slow from your auto attacks, disrupt enemies DPS with your burst and try to maintain bonus resistances from your Battle Roar as long as possible.

Thrill of the Hunt has pretty low CD, using it to reveal enemies might lead into catching them of position and allow your team for great initiation. Use it to scout nearby territory when you can't see whole team or simply want to hunt champion who is wandering alone. Works wonders in department of Baron control.

Wizard - Playstyle Section

I hate to admit it but it does work. It's stupid, skilless and not fun, but i'll be damned it really does work.

This playstyle turns Rengar into dumbed down version of AP Sion As you may know AP Sion is viable thanks to 1.0 AP ratios on his stun and moreover Death's Caress. His playstyle is based on using shield detonation do deliver huge amount of magical AoE damage, AP Rengar is the same but his damage is delivered instantly and twice.

There is no much to say your playstyle will revolve around mashing your Battle Roar. With full build your Battle Roar with deal around 1k damage to every target in range, on single cast. Press it twice and you just dealt 10000 dmg to the enemy team.

There are no individual sections for Early, Mid and Late game on this playstyle, because it's binary and nothing really changes.

Nothing surprising here, start with Boots+3x Health Potion. Take bot or top lane. You can try to harass your enemy, but play safely until level 6. After that you will be much more aggressive, and pretty much unkillable. Good idea is to use double roar on your enemy/enemies, pretend to run away and use ultimate. Then after filling ferocity double roar again, throw Ignite, Savagery and Bola Strike that's enough dmg to get a double kill.
Farm until you have enough gold to upgrade your boots into Ionian Boots of Lucidity and Needlessly Large Rod, if you were forced to go back earlier get boots. From now on single Battle Roar will be enough to clear a wave of minions and farming is a breeze. If you feel confident get Mejai's Soulstealer if not work towards Rabadon's Deathcap. I strongly recommend getting Mejai's Soulstealer you deal huge AoE damage and in most cases you will pile up stacks very fast.
For the rest of your game you will run around map one-shouting creep waves and looking for a fight. When it comes to it pop your ultimate and place yourself between enemies and use your double Battle Roar.

Just follow this build and you should be fine:
Quick explaination:
Lich Bane with this, all your abilities deal damage based of your AP, sweet.
Void Staff provides all magic penetration you need.
Hextech Gunblade Lifesteal for Lich Bane procs and SpellVamp for Battle Roar, also nice stats

This build is perfect to ruin you game experience with Rengar. I don't like playing him this way, but it's very easy and effective and should be mentioned.
