  • LoL Champion: Kog'Maw

Introduction

Kog'Maw can go either ADC or APC, and has great attack speed stats and an ult with a lot of potential. It's easier to learn him as an ADC, since you pretty much just use W and click enemies near you. As an APC you have to learn to conserve your R or else you'll be out of mana halfway through a teamfight. Playing hybrid is a lot of fun but is hard to pull off honestly, though it can be ridiculously overpowered if used right. Sticking to AP or AD alone is the easier choice. Due to the fact he's equally used in either lane, it can throw off the enemies during champ select, and he's not countered too hard by anyone if you use his utility properly.

Laning

Play safe, don't pick fights unless you have a good opening. Kog'Maw is way too squishy to pull off clutch plays, but after getting just a small bit ahead he can melt anything with his W. Mostly just poke with your Q and don't use your W unless they're starting a fight. If you're the ADC, wait for your Support to initiate, then throw down an E to prevent them from escaping, then your Q, and THEN your W. Using your W first will reduce the number of AAs you can squeeze in, and Q only lasts 5 seconds. Your ult does significantly more damage the lower their health is, and the cost doubles each use until you let it cooldown. If you take advantage that it can be reused instantly, you will run out of mana and die guaranteed. Use your Q for poking unless you know it will kill them. Your R also shows hidden enemies/monsters, so use that for checking bushes. There's no reason for Kog to facecheck ever. It doesn't show up hidden wards, though.

Laning / Farming

Kog'Maw is easy to gank, since he's so slow. Try to stay within range of your turret unless you're going for the enemy's. If you're in midlane, you can ward farther out on one side of the river and stay near that side so they have a farther distance to go before reaching you. Go for pokes often, but not full on fights until you have your ult. I find it best to poke with one AA as well as your Q, since it lowers their defense. In bottom lane, when your support impairs their movement (stun, slow, etc) use your E between them and their safety zone. Try not to fight when your W is down, it's more important than your ult honestly.

Don't use your E or W to farm unless there's nobody remotely around. It's better to save for ganks and teamfights. You can get a whole group of minions low on HP and ult them all at once if you're in a hurry. For split-pushing, just attack the minions in the back first, and by the time you kill them you can ult the minions in front to clear faster. Or hide in a bush nearby until all their HPs are low and ult the group, this makes it less obvious for the enemy team to notice you split pushing.

Abilities

Q Caustic Spittle

Always use this in conjunction with another attack, even if only a single AA. It has decent range and the armor/mr reduction means it should ALWAYS be used when you're starting a fight. Usually in laning phase I'll just use a Q then AA and fall back. It saves mana so you can sustain longer and prevents longer engagements until you have more abilities. Often you can use it just to scare off people trying to engage you, even if you don't follow up.

W Bio-Arcane Barrage

I consider this the most important ability Kog'Maw has, don't ever fight without it. AP builds will get much more out of it due to the % damage bonus. It does extend your range, but don't think that means you can fight someone under turret with it. I've seen people try to... Don't be a fool. Also, the bonus damage reduction from minions isn't there anymore - or at least it doesn't mention it in-game anymore.

E Void Ooze

This was recently nerfed, so it's not as important to level up anymore. I use this for poking people who constantly hide behind their minions in laning phase, and as a combo for my supports' movement impairs. Sometimes if I'm in a hurry to split push a minion wave, I'll E then R - but only if I know all of the enemy team is away from me. If you see someone coming to gank you throw down your E in their way. They'll have to decide between going a path more advantageous to you, walk through your slow, or just wait. If your team is about to gank, don't use your E until the enemy is about to run. Try to use this sparingly, as it is double the cost of any other ability you have (except after stacking your ult's effect)

R Living Artillery

DO NOT SPAM THIS. I see everyone spam this, whether it be to start an engage, or as soon as it cools down in a team fight. If you use it early on, it doubles in mana cost, meaning you could possibly not be able to use it when you do need it most. The damage increases significantly the less health they have, so in a fight try to ONLY use it after a Q, or on an enemy near death. When roaming or in laning phase, use this to check bushes. It gives temporary vision and has a huge range. The range increases every time you level up, and buying a Rapid Firecannon is a great combination. Nobody can escape your Lv3 R with it. Try using it to steal jungle camps, it works wonders.

Team Work

Always stay behind your tanks or a wall, and trap enemies into teamfights with your E. If you ever see a teammate stun/grab/etc anything like that, that is the perfect time for your E. Whittle down everyone's HP using your W, but as soon as their HP goes below 10% or so just use an ult on them and switch to the next target. Kog has terrible movement speed, so you should be the first to leave a teamfight if it's going badly. Kog'Maw isn't a hero, he's a caterpillar. Run.

Summary

Utilize your W as much as possible when engaging, and only use your ult if necessary. It eats up mana faster than it looks.
Play safe the entire time, no matter how crazy fed you get. Kog'Maw is squishy no matter how you build him.
Over anything, avoid being focused because if you get their HP low you have plenty of range to ult them.
Q = intiate
W = fight
E = trap
R = cleanup
