Hello, my name is Mintleaves, although you may call me Mint. This is my first MobaFire Guide, and I figured I could do it on one of my top ten favorite champions,
Ryze.
Ryze is an AP carry, preferably played mid against other AP champs, his ability range from stuns, to AOEs.
The reason I like
Ryze, is because of his ultimate,
Desperate Power, plus his E,
Spell Flux, which bounces between 5 enemy units, his ulti makes any spell of his an AOE move. Using this, I can add some range to my arsenal, and not be able to get out ranged by a
Twisted Fate or
Annie.

Lore
I've seen guides which have the champion's lore so I figured I might as well do it too.
There are many on Runeterra who are attracted to the study of magic or, in recent times, the emerging field of techmaturgy. For most, pursuit of such knowledge is formalized in a college or university. The halls of traditional study were never for Ryze, however,whe felt a more raw and primal connection to the magicof Runeterra than those who tried to teach him. He struck out on his own as a to discover what already called to him. Ryze traveled the world, seeking the wisdom of powerful hermits, witches, and shamans - anyone who had something to share beyond what was taught in the city-states of Valoran. When he had learned all he could from these fonts of wisdom, Ryze turned to seek the lost, forgotten, and forbidden knowledge in the world, delving into mystical worlds where others feared to tread.
Ryze's tireless searching for magical knowledge led himto an ancient form of spellcraft known as thorn magic. This art required Ryze to tattoo spelld on his body, permanently infusing his being with vast arcane power and finally fulfilling his need to bond with the mysticalenergies of Runterra. His travels also led him to uncover the giant indestructible scroll he now carries on his back - the purpose of the inscribed scroll remains a secret only Ryze knows. He clams it is an abomination - something that he must safeguard from the world. This has piqued the curiosity of many, though no one is sure how to seperate the scroll form Ryze, or if it is possible to overcome the rouge mage to do so. Since then, Ryze has joined the League of Legends to study the magical creatures and powerful will-workers that fight there, in order to complete his exploration of mystical Runeterra.
In this lore I saw the true Ryze, one that wished to be all that he can be and in every game I try to do just that.
Pros / Cons
Ok this is, in my own opinion, what's bad or good about
Ryze.
Pros
+ Good Nuke Late Game
+ Has amazing array of spells
+ Hilarious Taunt "Take this scroll and stick it... Somewhere safe."
+ His passive runs of mana making him and
Archangel's Staff a match made in heaven
Cons![]()
- Very Squishy Early game
- Champs like
Twisted Fate and
LeBlanc can outrange him easly
- Ganks kill him
- He's Blue
So as you can see it's really a tie between the Pro's and the Con's
Item Explanation / Alternative Starts
In the item build you may notice how I started off with a
Sapphire Crystal and two
Health Potions
The reason I start off with those is cause it gives me a basic "ima stay in lane and heal" type deal. Now those items build into
Tear of the Goddess and you dont build that into
Archangel's Staff until like, the very end.
Another alternate start is
Meki Pendant and 1
Health Potion and one
Mana Potion
This start is a "no lose mana and health start" plus
Meki Pendant is also another item into
Tear of the Goddess
Then again you could always start off with
Doran's Ring for more health and mana regen in case of some early ganks by jungle.

These items work good with Ryze because of his passive
Alternative Items
This Chapter covers some items that are best left to your opinion or how the game's going.
1.
Trinity Force This item is a good replacement for two items on the item build.
Frozen Heart This item can be replaced for one reason: The fact that after he uses an ability his next attack deals more damage.
Rod of Ages This item is a hard choice to make while I might lean more to RoA, Tri Force can be useful in a lot of ways, but like I said it's more or less your opinion.

Void Staff This item was suggested by yehosera: "If the game has gone that late a void staff would be a better idea, as the enemies will have loads of MR by then." and he's right by the time you get towards the end of the game they will have MR.

Archangel's Staff A second Archangel's Staff was put in because it gives you at max 1000 more mana but the AP off it doesn't scale off The First one so replacing it with a
Void Staff will be better.
3.
Will of the Ancients Getting some Ability Power is fine, but giving your allies, ability power and spell absorbtion, makes this an amazing item.

Archangel's Staff Basically for the same reason for
Void Staff, having this is better becasue it also helps your team in more fights.
4.
Rabadon's Deathcap This item gives you the most Ability Power in the game and it gives a bounus 40% AP
Rod of Ages Replacing this will Deathcap will be no easy task having Deathcap means you will have to be more aggressive in a fight so you will have the money to build it. (Original Price 1140, Ingredients 2460)
Rod of Ages is 850, Ingredients is 2200.
Second
Archangel's Staff This seems to be the most reasonable choice as recommended by Rzympolista who said "I'm not 100% sure, but i think that by changing ONE archangel to rabbadon Ryze's damage would go up by some nice amount."
Rylai's Crystal Scepter This is a good pick for
Ryze considering how his Q is like his auto-attack, it spams. So slowing and chasing is a good thing to get those kills.
Lich Bane A good situational item if they have a lot of AP, the movement speed is what we focus on, for chasing.
That is all the items I think would be worth mentioning but again like I said It's really your choice on the matter.

This item is one of your main's, it is a wonderful item that can restore your health and mana upon leveling up.
This item is a good one that also requires
While I'm sure you won't be fighting AD champions in mid, once you hit late game it's time to leave and explore other lanes and those will surely have AD carries.

Summoner Spells
These are the spells we chose:
This is a classic summoner spell used on almost any champion. This will make sure that even if they get away they will most likely die. It also gives you more damage in a fight.
An escape mechanism or a chasing mechanism I cannot tell you how many times this has given me the last hit or saved my life (At least 50 combined)

Summoner Spells To Consider
These Summoner Spells are good choices if you don't have
This Spell is good if you don't want to leave for mana, and stay in lane a little bit longer.
This Spell is good if your in a 1v1 and feel that your losing or if your getting ganked and want to live.
A good spell especially for ganks, when they throw a slow, stun, or a fear, plus this helps get rid of the
