Support Types / Categories for Picking and Counter-picking  Patch 12.5

Description

Just a support main's attempt at organizing the types of supports and trying to get good at filling out team compositions and counter picking. I'm someone that loves giving every champ a shot and getting really intense about the draft phase and what's needed of me.

Organized left to right, row by row, strong to weak.

In the current iteration, each support is organized into each category they have minor strengths in. A champion with multiple talents may be lower down in multiple categories, but thus being strong overall (like Lulu). However, I don't include champions that technically fit the category without it being at all a strength (like Rell in sustain)

I try to include most workable off-meta picks in the waiting room at least, but despite my enthusiasm to play everyone, even I can't try them all.

Feel free to let me know where I've left champions out or where you disagree!

Thanks for reading!

*****
1

Poke

Whittling down (or chunking down) the enemy. In a poke vs. poke matchup, range will play a big factor. Brand does the most damage, but will be outranged by Zyra, who would be outranged by Xerath.

2

Peel

Made to peel off engagers, typically from your ADC. When to pick: The enemy has several divers/assassins/juggernauts, enemy bot lane has major engage potential. Peel is the most common utility brought to the table by the support.

3

Protection

Made to mitigate damage or negate it entirely. Anti-poke rather than anti-engage peel. Pick into Poke lanes with mages and ADCs like MF, Sivir, or Ezreal

4

Engage

Able to start a fight and go all-in, putting themselves in danger, when it's advantageous for your team. These champions tend to have strong roaming potential as well.

5

Catch

Has safer CC capabilities that don't require going All-In. Prevents enemy escape.

6

sustain

Sustaining them and their ADC through poke, often trying to go even in lane and shine later in the game. Pick into poke lanes and scaling enemy comps.

7

Scaling

Tries to go even in lane, scales well late game with either more levels or gold.

8

Enchant

Champions that have the most frequent opportunities to confer buffs from Shurelya's Reverie / Ardent Censer / Staff of Flowing Water and/or heals from Moonstone.

9

Tanky

When your team has no other frontline or is entirely squishy champions and you need somebody who can take some heat.

10

Blind Picks

For one reason or another, these champions function well without knowing what they're headed into, and it's highly suggested to have one in your arsenal when you don't know the enemy composition.

11

AD / Lethality

Riot is slowly growing design space for Ad in the support role, especially with the expansion of lethality items that offer unique utility like Umbral Glaive's vision control or Serpent's Fang being the only "shield greivous wounds" item. Consider one of these if your entire team went AP for some reason or the enemy comp lets you get away with being a double ADC bot lane.

12

The waiting room

Here are all the champs that are really on the line when it comes to support viability. Most bring something unique to the table that allows them to support in a way only they can in niche situations. Many aren't tuned for the role and might need additional utility in their kit, less "selfish" abilities or ults, or a rearrangement of base values and AP/AD scalings. If one of them appeals to you, know that there are definitely some people out there making them work and you may come across them every so often in the enemy lane. I personally draw the current line right about after Neeko and Galio but just before Taliyah and Veigar. Experiment with these in norms though, you might stumble upon something great!

What do you think about Rakan blind pick? and, can I say the situations where lulu is good, milio is too ??

I don't like blind picking Rakan because of how counterable he is by both the enemy support and ADC (Something like Morgana with a Vayne who can tumble away would be awful), but if the roaming is going to be good, it could be worth it anyways.

And yeah my guide is pretty out of date at this point, but Milio is generally Lulu with less focus on one person and more spread out across the team.

Especially after Worlds this year, but also in Solo-Q I would love to see Heimerdinger in the Situational/Waiting Room! <3

Nice one. Always had a list like that when playing Dota 2. Like that organizing Stuff!

How are Sona and Karma in the engage tier? They have really low range, not to mention being super squishy

It's probably cuz sona E and sona ult are pretty good at actually starting an engage while also being helpful when you actually want to disengage. And sona is pretty good for bursty trades bc she can just press all of her buttons and generate a bunch of damage and shields.

As a yuumi main, I personally think that if you really know how to play yuumi, employing her in&out playstyle as much as possible without getting caught, she's pretty much a blind pick. Just have to trust that my ADC knows how to play with me (but i'm usually duo queueing anyways).

100% agree, always high ban rate especially if you don't have first pick. Also matches all Blind Pick criteria for me. Maybe not as versatile as some of the others, but still works in a large majority of situations.

i just wondering why taric isnt in the "Sustain" "Scaling" and "Enchant" tier. Just because he out sustains Alistar, Bard, Seraphine and Swain.
He outscales Swain for sure and in general he scales very good, but not good against an full ap team tho. And he is basicly a Melee lulu so i dont understand why he isnt in the Enchanter tier.

But besides of this i like your tierlist. Just a bit critic from a 800k P1 Taric otp :)
Nice work on the tierlist anyway, i just saw you wrote smth to every champ too. Just so much work in it.

This is an amazing tierlist. my only question would be about braum, could he really be considered poke? his q is big and predictable so trying to hit it by itself it already difficult and should be used more as an engage then poke no?

He's at the end of that tier, but it's not negligible damage, and he can afford to throw quite a few out without going OOM. It's enough he can create some space for his ADC with the threat of its damage instead of just being a punching bag for mages (and old kleptomancy users) like he used to be.

It is a curious tier list, the truth is that those who play the most are in the waiting room, it is still informative, at least Seraphine seems to work in many scenarios, good list

I wish there were one of these for each role in the game, this is such an interesting and useful tier/guide.

Hi, don't you consider Thresh also a tanky support?
2
Majestueux (11) | February 28, 2022 8:12am
Hello! I actually don't. I think it's the biggest misconception with the champion. He doesn't have anything that provides him with natural survivability in his kit; he's built around setting up his teammates. He does tend to build support tank items and use the resolve tree, but this is mostly to survive long enough to peel his ADC. Thresh remains relatively poke-able and burstable throughout the game compared to other champs, especially other hook champs.
