Yi is squishy, and imo his best contribution to a team is pushing towers quickly. After he gets life steal he becomes a bit tougher because of his insanely fast speed and attacks, which will heal him while he is fighting for a decent amount since he starts to hit so hard.
My advice, learn to recognize when to stay and fight and when to retreat. When pushing towers, map awareness is key as to avoid ganks. But I find Yi to be my favorite champ to backdoor with, push lanes quickly, and push towers with ease and speed. Everyone knows a fed Yi can be a very dangerous Yi, and people will tend to focus him if doing well because of this and his being squishy. I've been able to carry awful teams through matches simply because I could push so hard with him.

Once you get good with Yi and a better feel for his playstyle, you can be more aggressive cause you will have a better sense of your limitations. Try reading some guides on him. I'm not gonna say I'm an expert on Yi, but this is just my opinion on him.

Glad I was able to help. Just keep practicing and learning new techniques and strategies. I like to read really in-depth guides on champs, even ones I know how to play, just to get a new perspective on a different playstyle.
