Well, I would say the above list fits in quite nicely.
Try taking a look at this:
http://www.lolking.net/charts
It will show you popular usable champs and wins/losses, which might help you choose which champs you want to use (or rather, want to avoid - some people are just too alternative to be mainstream XD).
My personal favourites are:
AD Carries -
Ezreal,
Graves and
Caitlyn
Support -
Leona,
Sona and
Blitzcrank
AP Carries -
Malzahar,
Viktor,
Fizz and
Galio
Jungler -
Nocturne,
Lee Sin,
Xin Zhao and sometimes
Rengar (I don't find him too fun, tbh, but he's very OP and quite easy to use, imo.)
Solo top -
Malphite,
Jarvan IV,
Jayce and
Yorick

Riven (AD Bruiser, jungler, can carry)
Ahri (AP mage, very agile, ult can be used to follow/escape)
Warwick (GREAT jungler, pretty good ganker, can end up with lots of damage, armor, and hp)
Out of those, Warwick is probably the easiest to get started with. He is rarely picked, but he is not underpowered at all.

It has been quite a while since I played LoL and when I loaded up the game for the first time I was absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of new champions available now.
With that said, the characters I used to play were Kassadin, Malphite, Rammus, Blitzcrank, Amumu and Ryze. I think the most recent champion at the time was Nasus (who I never really played much)
One thing that I noticed is that some of those characters I used to play with are either immediatly chosen now, banned in game or mildly underpowered.
I guess what I was wondering is if anyone could help me compile a list of say 5 or 6 champions that I should begin researching/learning (possibly purchase) as I dive back into the LoL universe. I don't really have a preference as to what type of character to learn either, whether ranged/melee assassin/tank/jungler.
I guess what I'm trying to avoid is wasting time relearning a champion only to find out later that they are either:
1. Always Banned
2. Underpowered, or drop off terribly late game.
3. So popular that I'll hardly ever get a chance to use.
If this is a silly request and ya'll have a more realistic way of integrating smoothely back into this game I welcome any advice ya'll have!!!
Thanks again everyone!
