Hey there,
Well I started League of Legends a couple of months ago when a friend of mine requested me to. It around the time of my 10th grade IGCSE exams so it was actually pretty stupid thing to do, but I did it anyway. Before this game I had actually never played anything on PC as I was console person who was getting pissed due the fact I couldn't get a newer console and the new and awesome games were only being made them. I was stuck, I thought this is the end of my gaming life.
So I downloaded my first PC game (exciting) and I realised. I have a really ****py laptop... It has 3gb RAM and runs windows 7 and it 8 years old (yeesh). I run the game and I see that I am only getting like 10 fps (literally), and it was hell. By the time I can make a decision on what to do the game has already changed and something else has to be done. It was frustrating.
Now everyone would be like, why not upgrade to a better laptop or better yet get a desktop? The thing is all of this costs money and that is the one thing I don't have. It is too expensive for me to get a desktop or laptop. So for a very long time I have been searching for ways to improve my condition and get a better performance out of the system. I even called up Riot and support and the only advice I could get was to upgrade my RAM (not blaming Riot I appreciate their help).
After that I practically gave up and settled for what I have. After some changes in the settings I managed to up the FPS to about 30 which kind of satisfactory I guess but still not a great gaming experience.
But even after all that League of Legends still clings on to me. I still go and run the application even if it overheats my computer (hell, I keep an ice pack under my laptop when I play), I have gone to such creative measures to keep playing a game which is truly not fun... :) What I mean is I like the competitive nature of players even in normals, so I have no idea what ranked will be like. One game I had a bad early game and I was 0/3/0 and my mid lane tells me "You're reported for feeding". I was laughing so hard at that, it was unbelievable, the levels one would go to just win a normal.
That is why I haven't played a game of ranked yet thinking of the seriousness people may have over there and I will mess things because of my system performance.
I did try to play ranked once. I had recently hit level 30 and got 20 champions, I was ecstatic to jump into my first ranked game. Upon joining my teammate interrogates me why I am playing ranked so early and that my normal games suck (Which was true at the time), before we got into the game he dodged. I was kind of hurt but decided it was for the best.
So that has been my personal experience in League so far, I still play but I am waiting for the day where I can have a system with better performance and finally play ranked.

Anyway that out of the way, welcome to MOBAFire/League! I was never a console player personally (can't use a controller to save my life) but League was also pretty much my first game, if you discount the Sims and that sorta stuff. 30 FPS is pretty annoying but I'm glad you're still able to play :) Do you have any ETA on when you might be able to upgrade your laptop or buy something new?
