"building AP, no armor or MR, and maxing E - this would certinly increase the damage output, but do you have to use a safe playstyle and dash in and out - or just dodge any enemy damage?"

"Resolve tree makes a lot of sense.
Building 2 points in Q early helps me because otherwise it's just a AA cancel"
