I do truly believe that we would be better off as a species if we didn't fuss so much over our gender. This creates unnecessary segregation between the genders, in a addition to the obvious segregation already present (like separate changing rooms/showers, which actually have a use).
By not fussing over our gender I believe social attitudes will grow more tolerant.
Trans is a tough topic. I've been reading a bit about it and there seems to be very torn opinions on it, as with any hot topic.
It is classified as a mental disorder. And from what I've read this classification seems to hold water, scientifically. To the point where even the very hospital which pioneered the sex-change operation is no longer doing it. They are now using medication to help a person come to terms with their biological gender.
The disorder is likened to disorders where a person has limbs (like an arm or a leg) they feel don't belong to them. I mean, just think about it. In those cases you can't very well just cut off their limbs to make reality adapt to their mind, now can you?
While the sex-change operation was successfully making some individuals happy, it wasn't working for many others (a majority I believe). Suicide rates after the change were still very high.
It's an incredibly painful procedure that takes many years and operations to complete. I believe male to female is the most painful and troublesome as they have to carve out a cavity in their body which was not there originally. This creates all kinds of other medical issues. The permanence of the procedure didn't help either.
Considering the risks, pain, permanence and low success rate of the operation, it really does seem scientifically and logically solid to classify and treat trans-gender as a mental disorder.
