I've literally never uploaded a YouTube video in my life. But, recently, I've been recording some of my games and I listen to music in the background. I'm not monetizing the content or (purposefully) trying to make money from this, but I want to make sure I don't violate any copyright shenanigans.

So, to anyone else who has created YouTube videos: what, if anything, do I have to do to ensure my videos won't get flagged/taken down?

They usually won't get taken down if you have copyrighted music in it but they may get blocked in Germany due to copyright issues. Instead, what usually happens is that YT identifies that you're using copyrighted music and just monetizes the video and sends ad revenue to the rightful artists.

If you want to prevent this, I think people sometimes speed it up (1.05 or 1.1x) so it cannot be automatically detected.

All right, thanks for the information. I guess I probably don't have to worry if I'm not planning to make any money off of it.

Sometimes youtube will mute parts of the video too, it really depends.

Don't put music in it that you don't own.

I'm not. I listen to music in the background (online stations and mp3 files). I can't exactly edit it out without muting the entire video. I haven't even bothered to edit these videos - just record them and put them on YouTube when I feel like it.

Whether that counts as putting music in that I don't own, I don't know. I'm not intentionally trying to put the music in, but I like to listen to music when I play. I guess I could figure out some way to not record that music, but that seems like a huge pain.
