Hi ;) I have got some questions to you. I wonder why you have chosen Unsealed Book for keystone rune? I think that main reason can be fact that you really wanted Inspiration tree... but why? Does Biscuit Delivery is so important on Malzahar? If not, Inspiration can be secondary (like in your second build), but then... why do you put Biscuit over 5% cooldown reduction? I also have question about Keystone rune in Sorcerty Build - don't you think Summon Aery would be better? I know, it was nefed a bit, but it sill always hits (unlike Commet) and has pretty low cooldown. Very good to poke in early game (level 1 and 2 especially).

I'm not sure that unsealed spellbook would be the best for malz, maybe something like glaciel augment would be good on him, slow then let your voildlings attack. i'm not sure though, only my idea

malzahar is a just a cancer pick and i main him, as mid land and support also he is very useful, ulti adc and get the kill or give it to the jungleor adc, well possible work as tanky but i like to go more for damage on him ratehr than tank, more ap also can easy solo splitpush lanes and he is great in 1v1 with ulti combo.

I would suggest to change Ryze a bit in your "counterdetails", since Ryze E will completely destroy all of your pets, which lowers the damage output.
And still.. most of time, Malzahar can't easily press R on Ryze, since he has to destroy frontline (very easily) and after that, Malzahar is literally dead :D

Lane isn't too easy for Malzahar, since he should stay a bit away from minions (which he wants to push) or he gets damaged by EQ from Ryze

Hello! ^^
I have got a question. Is it really correct to rush Lost Chapter? In my opinion this item is useful for champions that have problems with mana at early game. I think that with mana regeneration from Malzahar's W it's good to buy other items as first e.g. Fiendish Codex or Blasting Wand (to faster complete of Liandry or Rylai). What is your opinion about this?

Hey Aqua Night!

I too have been playing Malzahar basically ever since I started playing League of Legends at the beginning of season 3, after friends introduced me to the game. Throughout the years I climbed up the Ranked Ladder, often playing mainly Malzahar. When the major rework in the Mid-Season-Magic patch was announced, I was quite interested at first. I had problems finding myself back into the champion afterwards since they changed all the abilities:

-Minions were changed from passive to the W. Shield was added.
-Q Damage and CD were reduced.
-W Field was moved onto the Ultimate.
-E Damage and CD were reduced and it could be reactivated with Q.
-R Damage was removed and replaced soleley with the W &HP Field.

Then people started playing him in Jungle, which made Riot nerf his W minions. Later his movement speed and attack range was reduced which meant he could no longer stay further back in lane and stay safe. Also the passive Shield was nerfed from patch to patch.
I started thinking that the champion was becoming ever and ever weaker, which was really sad in my opinion. I wanted to continue playing the champion but he was getting nerfed more and more.

Your Guide is about Midlane Malzahar, but now I would want to know what you think about the state of the champion? Did you have similar feelings concerning the ongoing nerfs?
I still made it to Diamond 5 (up to now) this season with playing Malzahar and have more than 300k mastery points on him, still play him from time to time.
But if you look on surrender@20.net, Riot wants to nerf the minions and reduce Malz's armor more. I really don't know if the champion is still worth playing.
A guy in my friendslist who has more than 800k mastery points also stopped playing Malz (still played him to D5 though), because he also thinks the champion is getting to weak.
And I have to admit that I probably played around half or more of my 120 Malzahar Ranked Games this season on Support, because I found him becoming too weak for mid lane...

What do you think about the champ? I nearly wish Riot would revoke some of the changes they made. :(

Regards,
Critical Smite

First things first, thanks a lot for reading my guide, much appreciated. Now on to our dear Malzahar: I do keep track of every s@20 changes, and I also keep track of Riot's thoughts of him. The nerfs are mostly aimed at the support playstyle, because bottom lane is where physical damage carries go, and also, the Void Swarm change is aimed at melee supports, to give them a chance to fight them. I agree this hits on Malzahar's mid lane capabilities though. Currently, I think Malzahar is in a very balanced state, where he can actually contribute in any phase of the game, bar the early laning phase. The power creep league has now makes it hard for anyone to notice it, but a good Malzahar player, can tear teams apart (or make the buy 4 Quicksilver Sash :P). He is a good counter to many popular mid-laners (for example Ahri), and can help you climb pretty well, if you know how to play. Also, league right now is based on a meta of mobility, where mobile champions shine. Malzahar is a counter pick to this meta, meaning he is anti meta, which is another reason he might seem weak. Also, if you click here, you can see that Riot wishes to compensate on Malzahar's mid-lane nerfs, by buffing him in preseason 7.9 Patch, so that can be a boost to help anyone finding him weak. You can also check Malzahar's stats page that compares him every Patch with the rest of the mid-laners, and see that is is in a decent spot, not strong, nor weak (you can check for support too). In the end, I agree that nerfs to support Malzahar have taken a toll on him in general, but you can't consider him weak by any means, when there are mid-laners like Azir, Twisted Fate, Heimerdinger, and others, who are either at a terrible state balance-wise, very situational, or simply unviable. Malzahar has always been a sleeper OP, right now he is just regular, but i wouldn't consider him weak. Thanks for the time you put into righting your thoughts, again much appreciated. Best Regards!

Hey Aqua Night,
Thanks for the response. I thought about a couple of points you made in your explanation a few times already.

->This is very true. I have played a lot of Support Malzahar in around Plat 4 to Plat 1 and the easiest times I had were against Melee supports. If they want to engage ( Sion, Nautilus, Blitzcrank...) they will have to tank the minions and I was also able to get many solo kills against melee junglers by outplaying them with Void Swarm positioning.

or make the buy 4 Quicksilver Sash :P

->This is also quite true. Recently had a (Diamond 1...) Ekko on mid lane who was complaining about Malzahar being too broken and so on (eventhough he was just bad...) and his team bought 3 or 4 Quicksilver Sashs. They can counter Malzahar, yea.

->This really surprised me. Last time I checked on surrender@20.net, they said that they wanted to further reduce Malzahar's armor and remove 1 HP from the 3HP Void Swarm bar. I will check it out though, thanks.

->Also true. The "sleeper OP" was the part I liked about Malzahar the most and while friends said that he was a bad champion or so on I kept playing him and I probably will, just not so often right now. (I did kinda also like him before his rework)

But this is somewhat what I mean:
Offcourse in some of those games I myself played kinda bad (especially the earlier ones) and also some of my teams weren't that great (due to flex matchmaking/I know it sounds like a bronze excuse, but trust me :P)
(And I used to have a 65% winrate and 4.2kda on malz before I started playing him flex queue xD. Now I only have 60% with a3.8 kda :/ )

I just kinda preferred this time:

And that was offcourse still lower Elo, but I really enjoyed that playstyle (even though dealing like up to 50% of the enemy HP with just one E was kinda braindead).

Thanks for the response though, Aqua Night.
Regards,
-CS
