I'd take Diadem only in the case where both teams are very beefy and neither has much burst damage, so you know fights are going to be long. And even then, the healing doesn't actually come from Diadem itself like you said, it comes from the rapid Helia procs! So I think Diadem is a pretty situational item nowadays.
Seraph's was my preferred item because it fit my playstyle of rushing 300 AP as quickly as possible and then throwing W debuff chords onto enemy carries for something like a 37% damage reduction.
All of my builds involved going Helia first, but I'm now seeing that Helia is NOT the overtuned item it used to be. When I played, Helia was almost a "give Sona all the kills so she can get Helia early" kind of item. Now it's just.. okay. Which is probably why people are building Fimbulwinter first.
And honestly, it makes sense. I'll quote myself from the guide:
> "Raw HP is more reliable than armor or magic resist. At least until your third item. But ultimately your movement speed defines how much HP you have. No amount of armor or magic resist saves you from bad positioning."
So before one positions well on her, HP is preferred. :)
Once her playstyle starts to click, she becomes such a joy to climb with. So much so that I'm a forever OTP now! x)
