That was sort of what I was trying to get at. My build may not be what people expect, but by mid game I've started playing support. Early game I play more caster/DPS than anything, saving heals for situations when they're actually needed instead of spamming them (which is why most people have mana problems with Soraka). Buying better items means that I sustain myself much longer in a lane. Not only can I support with heals, but I can 2v1 if needed, I can mid if needed, I can fit myself into almost any caster-related role the team might need. In my opinion this is another kind of supporting, but I don't know how many other people play this way.
I've also experimented with playing Soraka as sort of an anti-carry (which works surprisingly well), but I wouldn't recommend that for novice Soraka players, as it's actually kind of difficult.

She really can't do **** against carries. She can really only support others.

She can silence with infuse and DPS their health/lower their MR with starcall. Infuse has a pretty good AP ratio so you can deal quite a lot of damage with it with almost no items, and starcall deals progressively more damage with every hit (and boosts infuse's damage). The combo of the two is what makes it devastating: If you can get 3 or 4 starcall hits on a carry that's usually enough to make their magic resist about zero at low levels so then you're doing true damage with infuse. I've only done it a few times and, like I said, it's pretty difficult to do...It works better if your build has a Rylai's so you get a little more CC.
Still:
She really can't do **** against carries. She can really only support others.
She's squishy as **** and doesn't have high base damage.

There are AP support sorakas too. Support isn't about the build, it's about the playstyle.
