I know the title is ambiguous, so let me explain: i was playing today as Shen, and my team comp was pretty good, we had AD ranged, AP, support, tank, and a melee dps. The game seemed to be going pretty well the whole time. We were typically winning team fights. They had a jungle yi though, who was rarely involved in team fights, and literally just pushed side lanes constantly. by the time we got there, he would just ult and run away (i think he was also running teleport). We lost cuz of that guy. I was really intrigued by the idea. Are any other champs good for this kinda thing? Like can just do their own thing all game long and come out ahead? His final stats were like 1/4/1, but with 5 towers. Anyway, just looking for a recommendation. I have heard sivir and singed, but man, I STINK when I play singed. I see other players dominate with him, and I have NO clue how they do it. In their hands he is unkillable, in mine, he just does alot of nothing. Anyway, thanks, just looking for a champ that can kinda be independent all game and do their own thing instead of waiting around in that stalemate by a tower that often happens in teamfights.

Sounds to me that guy played Yi knew well enough what he was doing.

But to answer your question: every champion has it's own role in a team. And even more importantly, it's own role in a game.
Every champion is capable of pushing down turrets, some do that a bit faster then others and you should pick a champion you absolutely love to play.
With love for your pick, some practice and a good amount of creativity you can achieve anything.

But to narrow your search down quite a bit; if you like playing something like Master Yi (unpopular in ELO's though) you should definitely choose an assassin class champ.
Because that would be more suitable for you, I guess...

It might also help to read a couple of guides, even on champions you don't play, to keep you well informed about everyone's abilities and making any game somewhat easier.

This technique is called split pushing, and good champs for this are mostly tanky dps, such as Irelia, Warwick, Xin Zhao and so on. Especially Irelia is very good at split pushing due to he passive and abilities which allow her to escape from every gank. But you should only do this if you are sure your Team can handle 4v5, otherwise it will end very bad for you!

I wouldn't say tanky DPS are good at this - rather, it's champions that are mobile while having a decent amount of map control that are also able to deal a significant amount of damage to towers while forcing the enemy to make poor decisions.

Nocturne is a great split pusher because he's very strong at farming a lane, very strong at escaping with his 3 basic skills, strong at killing towers because of Duskbringer and his natural damage, and capable of joining a team fight quickly should one break out by using his ultimate. This forces the enemy to draw attention to you and when you can just rejoin your team in 2 seconds, you now have a 5v4.

Likewise, Shen/Pantheon/Twisted Fate are also great split pushers because of their ultimates.

Teemo is excellent because his mushrooms tell him when enemies are coming to try to stop him and his Move Quick lets him just dash away.

Shaco is also an excellent split pusher because he can decimate a tower in seconds with Hallucinate, can have map awareness with Jack in the Box and Wriggle's Lantern, and can escape extremely easily with Deceive.

The best split pushers are ones that can easily escape. The aforementioned shaco is great because whenever he sees an enemy champion he just deceives and gets away. Generally tanky DPS are better at this (than carries that don't have special split pushing skills), but many of the best split pushers are great at it because of certain skills they have, and few of them are tanky DPS.

Twisted Fate is one of the best IMO. Both AP and AD TF are good split pushers because AP can clear creep waves really fast, and still hit decent. Then AD can take down a tower fast. This makes AD TF really good at backdooring open inhibs as well. This plus his Ult makes him a deadly split pusher, and if you run Teleport you can be even more effective at split pushing (though teleport is not necessary for him to be a good split pusher).

Sivir is a good split pusher with teleport since she can clear creep waves fast with her boomerang blade, and kill towers fast.

Yi as you have seen, is also one of the best, he can backdoor turrets very effectively with his Ult + youmuu's, or if he doesn't use his ult to bd then get away quickly with his Ult with your teammates come.
