From questions asked in the US chatroom, it is a necessity on most, if not all, tanks. Most of the times, it is one of my first 3 items I build with tanks.
Sometimes it provides just enough Armor/MR to your teammates to make it through the fight.
Other times, it's just nice to have.
Vary rarely will I find myself selling it for anything unless my team already knows to stack Armor or MR against the enemy.

It's an awesome item that can turn fights around even fights.
It's a must on all teams, but the tank doesn't have to carry it. The tanky DPS can carry it too. Just don't make a squishy carry it.

OT: The aura that it gives is wonderful, specially when you are running around with 4 people that have no idea how to play LoL and that items are actually something you want!

That one item I cant think of, but 15HP/5 on Vayne... PEOPLE
So with AoL you can hopefully make up for a small bit of stupid.
