Mundo does as he please. That is all you need to know about mundo.
On a serious note, Mundo is a meh champion, we saw this at DH.
He is great at solo lane as he hits level 6 he can almost stay in it for ever, but however he easily brought down, just burst him down and done. This I think is a problem in team fights as he can't really do as much as other off-tanks such as alistar.
Personally I like playing him from time to time, would I play him in ranked games? No.
Do I think there are better off tanks? Yes.

He's a viable champion to play... not too strong after the nerfs that happened decades ago. He's all about stacking as much health as possible and your main poke skill is your cleaver. The ABC's for mundo is Always Be Cleavin'. Never stop spamming and try and hit something with it ALWAYS.

I love him personally in solo he throws off the opponents strategy with is constant " im here and never leaving or dieing " with him I always stay around in bushes when partners go back and continue to farm and poke and only buy items if were hurting terribly bad or I have the gold to buy the completed item outright. So as long as you rush spirit visage then warmogs your fine and if you can farm enough and possibly get a few kills you can have them both by level 8.
On the other hand if you can't hit your clever and suck at skill shots your worthless, and prolly should 1) quit the game, or 2) only play ryze lol

He is a solo artist. To be able to help in a team fight you have to build for it be an off tank.
I usually build him (when I played him a lot) Merc boots, Warmogs, Force of Nature, Hextech Gunblad, Rylais, Frozen Mallet.
Crazy I know BUT the upside is that everything you do both heals you AND slows the opposing team. And in the middle of a team fight that can help a lot. So you become a swirling, flaming, cleaver slinging, slowing, health regening off tank of death.
But the key to Mundo is hitting with the cleaver. If you cant well then...

In 3s there is not always enough DPS to kill him while his ult is on. Similar reason Morde is a beast in 3s and in general just a pubstomper in 5s.
