Alistar, Blitzcrank and Leona are my current favourites but thats because I hate feeling useless late game and like to get in on top of someone
Taric, Sona and Janna are all decent but they need the right team comps. Janna is good to take in the lane if you have Amumu on the team for example, because the team can then intiate a fight, kill off an enemy and reset the fight again.
And we have all played matches where we've never died so calm down :P

Don't get me wrong. I didn't mean to extra-value myself as a player, I just wanted to explain that maybe Sona is the correct choice for me, while others are not. I'm trying to learn, still.
Leona seems fine but I can't get her as she's not available for free, same for Blitz.
I found Janna way to cheap as support, good mobility and weak shield.
Have you tried Soraka or Taric? Shen seems good, too..

Alistar is good because he can net you a kill at lvl 2 with the Headbutt+Pulverise combo. He also has decent heals and has a tanky ultimate to let him take damage for the carry. He also continues to be useful for the team throughout the game regardless of items.
Amumu can be a support but he suffers from not having items and lacks any sustain, but it can work in niche situations.
Blitzcrank is much like Alistar. Can net you kills from almost just his presence and remains useful regardless of items. Lacks any sustain though so if you can't kill your opponents then you are in trouble. Best used with an AD carry like Graves or Cait.
GP is an amusing support option as well. Not fantastic but all he needs to do is spam his Q on the enemy and get a couple of gold stackers. He lacks sustain for the Actual carry but can soak up a lot of damage etc. without having to worry and is a good harrasser support.
Janna is good for obvious reasons. She would lose to say a Soraka + Vayne lane typically. But her and Pantheon and Ezrael can work. She also needs very little to continue to be useful.
Karma. Lots of people argue about her. In the end she is a problem is that although she can do well she needs a bit of farm to remain useful and thats her biggest problem.
Leona is the CC Queen. She just sits on the enemies face and her passive simply adds to the AD carries harrass. Great with champs like Ezrael and more melee champs like Riven as well who can keep up with Leona and constantly proc her passive. Lacks sustain however, but needs little late game feed.
Lux support can work as well but like Leona needs an aggressive laner like Sion or Ryze to make it worthwhile. (Thats right bot does not need to be support + AD carry :O)
Malphite is another interesting bot lane support which kinda works. He harrasses and keeps them off creeps but loses to sustain lanes as his harrass can't really be kept up. Scary with a Graves however.
Moaki is another interesting one. Him with Irelia allows for them to close a large distance and deal a LOT of burst damage. If placed with the right champion its hard to lose the lane.
Morgana can work bottom as well but not as great because she does need farm.
Nidalee is a recent favourite because she can harrass with spears, traps and provide heals whilst still having nice burst lvl 6+
Nunu is an option you don't see often, mainly because it truely turns him into a CC bot and he lacks sustain to go with his harrass. Can work though.
Rammus is another surprising option. Try him with Blitzcrank ^^
Rumble is yet Another surprising option. But his harrass is so strong he can out harrass sustain champs like Soraka with no effort at all. Does need a bit of farm to remain functional late game but as it is his damage is still quite high and his CC very worthwhile.
Shen is an ok option but his sustain can be a bit hard to pull off since it requires him to 'push' the lane. But again with an aggressive laner he can work well.
Sion is a hilarious option. Go Sion and Graves and watch the fun. Lacks sustain except self sustain at lvl 6.
Sona you know about.
Soraka is just a heal bot, but handy at that. I find she becomes very vunerable late game however. If they have a lot of assassins Soraka can find herself in trouble.
Taric syncs well with champs like Cait who have another stun and high AD damage. You can lock people in place whilst combining burst to just chunk their health down.
Zilean is also nice because he can harrass so well but he really needs farm late game to be completely OP which is why he is in mid-lane more often. But he has his uses otherwise

ALSO, any stun basically beats Soraka in lane (Leona, Ali, Taric). Heaps of sustained damage beats Janna in lane (Sona, Zil. She can't heal her carry!)

Australians, the best gamers in the world combined with the worst ping.
I was a loyal Sorakasupportplayer, but after many many games with her as support, supporting random idiots i decided to go something more offensive, since i cant play either Taric or Alistair(when i play Taric i just feel dont right and fail and idk bout Alistair prob. im to bad for him) i started to play Leona, sucessfully, but i got bored fast of her, at the moment i play supportzilean, his bombs are OP in the lanephase cuz of doublebombs+high base dmg. His speedbuff/debuff is good over the whole course of the Game and his ultimate is just broken and even reviveheals as support enough.
The only downside are the manaprobs, thats why i run 16 Manaregperlvl runes and get Philo Stone asap and even then he has some problems, maybe its because i try to harass as often as possible as soon as my bombs are lvl 2. Also after the 0815Supportequip(3 golditems, wards, shurelia) you can still go AP ;3

I would really try Leona out but she costs a lot and she's not in this rotation.
Other options which remain are Shen or Amumu here, but you both didn't say they're good as I see.

I see a lot of Ali, Taric and Sona these days, with some Sorakas and Jannas floating around. It also depends on how you like to play. If you like playing aggressively, Ali and Taric are near the top IMO because of their good CC that can punish an out-of-position player.
I'd say Alistar and Sona are currently the best ones.
Soraka, Taric and Janna are obviously really good too.
Then there are those less good ones like GP, Teemo, Maokai, Leona, Lux, Karma, Orianna, Zilean, Nidalee, Ashe and Blitz.
I think blitz would be the best of those ones.

At this point I can say Sona > Janna.
But considering I'm supporting an AD carry which is the best choice?
Soraka and Taric are viable?
What if I'd have to support an AP one?
Supporting characters like Xin-Zhao or Singed worths? I mean, letting them farm all the way while harassing enemies and heal mates allows them to get all the creeps and feed, staying in lane a lot, isn't it?
Just for information, I've played a couple of match with Sona where I've never dead, maybe I'm just doing it good.
