Man oh man. I've tried Kassadin a few times. I'm just not doing so well with him. For some reason he is very difficult for me to play. His early game is SO BAD. I'd love to get better with him. But I've seen so many different strategies that I have no idea what would be right for a beginner on Kass. I remember one person recommended getting tear on him and using that one skill that charges up his blade a bunch to get mana built up quickly. But is that a waste of time? Should I just go straight for dcap? O__o
I'm so great with almost every champ, but this one is just difficult for me. I was wondering, do champs seem hard to you guys for a little bit and then all of a sudden they just "click" with you and you finally get how you're supposed to combo and such? It'd be nice to know that others are like this too. Like when I was new with Akali, I was SO BAD. I thought she was so difficult and I was like SCREW THIS.
But later after a few more tries I finally got it and started pwning. I've noticed, that now that I have almost 800 normal wins, and about 500+ in AI/custom/season1 ranked, that it's much easier for me to just start a champ first time and do very well.
But Kassadin, I just have trouble with STILL! Maybe I could get some pointers from one of ya'll that's beast mode with Kass? :)

I was new to Kassadin alright?!
Point being mind which side of them you blink to.
You know when you riftwalk over to use your force pulse? I've ran into the problem of rift walking on top of them and missing my force pulse. Should I try to rift walk a bit behind them? I guess I don't know the full range of his ult damage so I still get that dmg before I FP.
I'm going to check out his guide right now. And thank you so so much. <3 +repz
Kass' only weaknesses are his squishiness early game and his vulnerability to zoning (he has no reliable way of remote-farming until later). If you're getting zoned, have your jungler gank quickly to reestablish your lane dominance. Kass really shines when he can control the lane; he's an incredible assassin. If you're having sustain difficulties, don't be afraid to buy health potions. They'll more than pay for themselves if they can keep you in lane.
Blue buff is also extremely important and you should pick it up whenever your jungler can give it to you (if you have a Lee Sin jungler, you'll probably get the first blue). With blue buff you can actually last-hit with Null Sphere if necessary, as well as spam harass very often. Again, read Searz' Kassadin guide. It's the guide I used when I started playing Kassadin again. The build works wonders.
As for your second question, I personally sucked at a long list of champions before I hit 30. When I had a few hundred wins, I started trying all of the champions that I used to suck with (like Kass) and suddenly I could actually play them well (with the help of a better build ^^). There are still some champions that I simply don't play because they don't suit my playstyle, but not nearly as many as before.
