Best I can give you that's at hand. Not sure about how good it is.
I myself am planning on learning from a book I have, and Wintermond is currently attending a class to learn Japanese.

If you have the opportunity to visit a class nearby(Outside of school) to learn Japanese, do it. You learn much better in a class than from self-studying.
Otherwise, search for good self-teaching books. I'd rather have a book than something from the internet.

Well I found a two books from my School Library. I chose the one I got because it had the symbols, how many strokes it has, the meaning and all that. But the book was presupposed that you read the JAPANESE LANGUAGE PATTERNS book and learned about grammar. Which was... the other book I had to choose from. This book I have talks about Kanji.
I can't take a class because I do not have time for it with schoolwork, daily chores that seem to be a necessity, and me being with my father half of the time in two different towns.
So for right now I am teaching myself from this book, learning the symbols and meanings. Not knowing how to pronounce anything due to the fact that I don't understand anything.

I took Japanese in College for fun. The basics are relatively easy, once you know the characters and their meanings. I'm not gonna lie, that was over 10 years ago, I forgot everything. The only difficulty at first is gonna be the grammatical structure which is entirely different from English (Or French since I'm French) and somewhat backward compared to what you know. But it was fun, and surely easier than other Asian languages, even though they do use a large number of Chinese ideograms. Good luck, though.
