iirc, they had **** where you could get something named after you (grez the lizard lord in TT is the first item named after a player)
you could even get enough referrals to fly down to riot games and design a champion. except for those things though the new system is pretty much better.

Edit: It seems to not only be me but I'm missing a lot of referral friends. I had like 70+ complete but it only says 24 =(
