Well, I started in Lua, programming for a game called Garry's Mod. From there I went into multiple web design languages (HTML, PHP, CSS, JS) and then one of my college classes introduced me to Python and I loved it. I still primarily program with lua but if I sit down long enough and have access to google I can figure others out really easily. In fact, at where I work, I've made a couple programs that made everyone's lives there easier.
Regarding the java question, I wouldn't know, as I'm not very fluent with Java myself, but I recommend starting with a language that you understand the most. If you don't understand anything about the language you're trying to learn you're pretty much getting nowhere.

As a programmer (I have a degree in Computer science and Electrical engineering and I currently working as a system software engineer) I will admit that java bypasses a lot of low level information that can be useful to know when transitioning to c/c++ or any lower level language. On the other hand as a second or third language it can be a great tool for coding quick applications and really getting to know what you can do. Not to mention that java is everywhere and a very important language to have on your resume. As compilers are evolving and processors becoming faster/cheaper a transition to more object oriented languages is becoming possible. This doesn't mean that java will rule the world as I feel .net(c#) is a much stronger language but the knowledge of object oriented programming you gain from java is still VERY important.
Java is also much easier to pick up than c/c++/c# so it gives you the ability to get your feet wet without killing the "I can codez good" the buzz-kill that c and c++ can be for some people. Pointers are pointy and if you aren't careful you will want to put something pointy in your eyes lol.
