How did you choose your main role?

So far in solo queue, I have bounced around between all roles, and I took everyone's advice to have 3-4 champs in each role that i feel ok about. However, I really feel like to take the next step forward in my game play i need to focus on one role and log as many games as possible in that role. The trouble is, well, I'm sure everyone has experienced this, but what to choose?! I feel like I can usually win my lane handily as solo top, but it sure seems to me that EVERYONE in solo queue wants top, not to mention I may not enjoy it as much in higher skill brackets, wehre getting easy 1v1 kills is probably not really possible.

Anyway, I'm just curious, was anyone else torn with what role to play? And how did you decide in the end? Thanks!

I just played various champions until I played Taric and liked him. Now, I main support. You just need to find out what do you like to play / what are you good at, and that just takes time.

Hmm... LZ seems to be behind on schedule.

Did I help you? Do you feel nice today? Take a look at my guide,I would really appreciate it.

I used to only play solo top as Wukong, and Jarvan IV. Then Viktor came out and I fell in love with his kit, so now I pretty much main mid lane... I'm constantly looking for characters that match my level of fun there as Viktor though and so far only Brand and Swain do it for me.

I used to just go in game and just click lock in (giving me a random champion) and I HATED (still kinda do) having to work with others, so I would just go solotop. My team started ranked 5s and that was my role, it's been pretty successful.

i like any lane but bot, because that lane is also heavily dependent on your support (cuz i only play AD carry).

I started a lot with Twisted Treeline and I always liked mages. When I started Summoner's Rift, I began going mid because that was basically the place the champs I played were supposed to go.

Hahahaha, you would be right. It's due to having to
go on this thing they call "vacation" and while it may
land me in places with cheaper wares than I'm used to,
it also equals very very slow internet. The past few days
I've had none at all in fact. So that's why. I apologize. I'll
remember to bring my satellite uplink next time.

Alright so about the roles.

It's quite normal you aren't sure what to play, after all, there's
now over 100 champions to choose from I believe. Most people they tend
to go with the champion which they generally feel they either have the
most fun with or the most success with. If you continously get triple
kills with champion X, that might prompt you to try out similar champs.
If things go well, then you'll probably soon be able to proclaim your
love for a specific role, more so than other roles.

However, I don't think it's that smart to have a "main" role. Instead I
think it's more adviseable to be an all-rounder, but with roles which you
perhaps particularly like. You even mention it yourself, that many other
people want the same stations on the map as you do, quite often. Thus, realistically,
to become the good player you wish to be, you ought to stay flexible. As you
also said, you're not even sure if you'd still enjoy a given role once you
reach a higher skill bracket, since you might not be able to net as many kills
as you perhaps prefer. Thus, with that in mind, I should think it's safe to conclude
that your "bouncing around" is quite fine, provided you don't have set goals in mind,
about which role to master for instance. But let me ask you, Do you have a goal?
Is there a certain ELO you wish to attain? Because all the best players they're
all-rounders, so that they can fit in any team composition with ease.

As for myself, the first champion I bought, after trying out loads for free, was Malzahar.
I played him a lot, sometimes good, many times very bad. I eventually got the hang of him
and had some fantastic plays now and then. After getting tired of that kind of, I tried
out other roles and now I don't really "main" any lane, although I tend to favor mid lane.

If you really don't know what to play or "main", then I'd say main Supports first. If you can
master supports, that'll really help win you games. As a support you have to be a team player, have
lots of map awareness and master an array of other techniques/skills in order to become truly great,
such as learning how to zone your enemy, so your carry can farm. After supports, you can work your
way up to AD carry, since that's also on the same lane. When you get that far, you can use the qualities you gained from playing support, to be an awesome carry. This is because, that many people, in their
farming-spree, forget all about that little "mini-map" and thus get ganked, die and fail-carry.
That's not even the full-story either, as you can also use the other things you learned as support.
Needless to say, with AD carry you will learn how to be aggressive at the right times and how
itemization and lots of farming are essential. And so on with the other roles. Eventually you will
have mained all of them and become an excellent player who can turn out to be invaluable to any
team; whether solo queue or ranked.

Enjoy :)

It's about your style, what irks you and what doesn't etc.

Take me for example, I tried top, mid and support when I was lower leveled. I was meh with top, good with mid and enjoying it and kinda bad with support but loving it. Then I went to the jungle and fell in love with it, it just became my main role. Also, I love Amumu :3

Anyways, the two roles I liked/loved were support/jungler and there is only one factor that is the same in both. In support, you worry a lot less about harassing/getting last hits and in the jungle you don't really worry about it at all. You see, I love that. I love being able to just clear my jungle without worrying about missing a minion or getting distracted. The relaxation of it is very enjoyable for me, and eventually it became my main and I got really good at it.

Just keep playing, eventually you'll find the role you love. Though you'll learn that ad carry is really the only way to get out of those low elos >:(
thanks Hogopogo for the banner :D

It took me a while to find my "role"

In other games, I'm normally a healer or mage.

I tried being support and I didn't like it so much.

I tried being an AD carry and I was horrible at it.

I tried jungling and I always fell behind. It just was not my thing.

I tried solo top and I always lost my tower first.

Then, I did AP mid. That is where I found my calling.

It took time and patience. :)
