Well, most current distros are all based on the big old distros (Debian, Slackware and Red Hat).

Slackware and Debian etc. Typically are very
stable for one, since they've been around for a
long time. Plus there's other benefits like large
repositories. I love that about Linux. You get access
to repositories, where you can download things which
are all digitally signed; thus inherently more secure
than most windows programs for instance.
