As far as I know abilities that deal damage fall into 3 categories.
Physical Damage.
Magic Damage.
True Damage.
Physical damage IS affected by armor pen/reduction.
Magic damage IS affected by spell pen/reduction.
True damage can NOT be negated by resists.
Physical Damage.
Magic Damage.
True Damage.
Physical damage IS affected by armor pen/reduction.
Magic damage IS affected by spell pen/reduction.
True damage can NOT be negated by resists.
Skills dealing physical damage are affected by all forms of ArP. This is why 
Last Whisper is a good item on AD casters like Riven or Talon.
