Hello people
As you might know some months ago I had burglars at my university place, and they stole my relatively new laptop; so I had to get my old laptop back and it was not exactly in mint conditions.
This said yesterday the comp went dead.
After firmly unwinding my rage against a wall with a broom stick I felt just so very calm, and decided to see what the hell was going on.
Apparently the hardware is safe and sound, it is just the OS that decided to die one me. I attempted to reboot it quite a few time and I encountred failure after failure, but for some reason every time I tried reboting in went a lil higher in the % till it stopped last time at 71% and after that last time I could not even enter safety windows mode.
I tried some various build in tools and tright now the reboot is at 81% and seems like going, like the turtle, slow and steady.

What's the point of this thread you mite ask..
gee I really don't know, I belive that the boredom of no computer, and average temperature of 42°, no sea in reaching distance, the fact I have not enough money to spend on things to relax myself like beer and, much less, drugs...
But yeah in the end I wanted to tell a story and ask a question about computers
the story above is just a treat for the audience, 'cause people tend to find it just amazing how computers always end in absurd ways in my hands (so far in 17 years of computer usage we got 6 computers under my ownership, and in this spawn of time 3 motherboards, 2 hard drives, 2 batteries, 2 hard drives, 2 usb ports, 1 dvd-blue ray drive and 1 alimentation adapter died under my ownership)

Let's say this rebooting fails, is there any chances to install a new OS using an external hard drive instead of a DvD?
fact is, the DvD/blueray drive that is broken is from this laptop so using my ubunti dvd to install linux: not an option.
But I have a couple computers available at my place that I can use to download stuff and an external hard drive, but only 1 usb available in the comp that has to be rebooted.

last news: error at 86% that's a personal best since this all started

Most good Linux distros can be installed through USB (2GB minimum for Ubuntu, I think).

The problem with your Laptop might be your HDD from what I hear. When an HDD is getting too old data gradually gets "corrupted" (making lots of things crash, including your OS). Running a disk check can prolong the life of the disk a little, but chances are that when it starts to go bad it won't be many months until it breaks down completely.
So as long as you got USB 2.0 or higher you could run your entire OS from a USB stick (you'd probably want Linux since Windows will eat sooo much space).
Any cheap USB stick will do it (HDDs are slower than even the slow USB sticks, they just have sooo much more storage).

I got the reboot to 100% after leaving my comp running vaio recovery utility for between 1 and 3 days while I was away. when I got back the reboot got to the end.
I gotta say next comp I'll buy, if I don't build one, is gonna be a Vaio.
