In the jungle, he doesn't have as much money as if he were top lane. Defense items are a lot cheaper, and easier to build parts of, than straight offense items.
I don't think he'll work mid as he doesn't have a good gap closer or any range. Compare that to Talon or Pantheon and you'll see a clear winner for midlane.

It's also because jungle Udyr tends to max Wingborne Storm whereas top lane Udyr maxes Wilding Claw which actually scales well with AD.
It's definitely possible to jungle Wilding Claw so feel free to try it. You'll still need to build at least somewhat tanky though or you'll die before you even get into range.

Wilding Claw jungle behaves better than Wingborne Storm in S3 due to AS buff working so well with Hunter's Machete.
In season 2 phoenix stance jungle udyr was probably the best option to go with Udyr because personally it was the fastest way to clear out the jungle. It still is now, it's just that the jungle camps are harder than before.
With mid Udyr, I have not really seen it before so I am not so sure... maybe the AD casters or bruisers mid might have been talon or pantheon. Talon is a viable mid because of his silence and high mobility, easily dodging skill shots. With pantheon, he's pretty strong mid if you know how to play him right. Have seen a lot of high elo pantheon mid games ~
Anyways if you're jungling Udyr just stick with the normal jungle items, just make sure you have Wit's End, you can also get Blade of the Ruined King but you should also consider being tanky so have a Randuin's Omen alongside with you. Bloodthirster is fine, nothing wrong with that.

So yeah, I have some questions about Udyr, jungle Udyr ! I've been playing a few games following guides, and I've noticed something : Udyr jungle is played as a tank, when Udyr top is usually built to do a bit more damage... Is there a specific reason for that ? Can I build Udyr a bit more agressivly n the jungle ? By agressivly, I mean with items like Brutalizer, Bloodthirster and using his Q a lot more ! I guess it would make it much harder in the early jungle but uh, I was wondering why not ?
Another thing : I've seen more and more AD casters mid, and I even saw some bruisers. Can Udyr be played mid against champs like Fizz or Diana ? I can easily guess that Udyr wouldn't work against ranged nukers as Ryze or Orianna, btw !
