Hey,

Pretty new to League, I have about 100 wins and I am level 27. My friends and I range from 90 - 160 wins. ( 2 of the 5 are currently level 30 , the rest of us 26-30).

Within about the last 5 days or so, we find the teams we are playing against to have 400+ wins each? Is it normal to face teams who have more victories than you do games played?

Is it based off a winning percentage? So lets say they have 400 wins... but have played 900 games they are under .500 for pct? So matching them with us, would make sense, if we have 100 wins and 200 games played?

Or does it factor in Experience at all? If someone has played 900 games, vs our 200 in this example, one would assume they have used more characters, and are more familiar with more items and how skills work etc?

Anyway, just trying to get a feel for how matchmaking is done, as it seems recently we are facing teams on average who have 4 times as many wins as we do.

Normal wins =/= skill

Someone can have played a lot of League of Legends and still suck at it. The Match Make Rating (MMR) aka hidden elo is the system behind the balancing system behind the matchmaking.

It is like the old elo system, but if you do not know what that elo system is, I will explain it briefly:
1. It is a number (for example 1200)
2. If you win a game, you get points in elo (for example +10, with fair matchmaking)
3. If you lose a game, you will lose points in elo (for example -10, with fair matchmaking)
4. If you play against someone with a higher elo than you, you will get bonus points if you win, and will lose less points if you lose (for example +20 if you win or -5 if you lose)
5. If you play against someone with a lower elo than you, you will gain less points if you win, and will lose more points if you lose (for example +5 if you win or -20 if you lose)
6. Elo/MMR is invisible and cannot be showed to you in any sort of way (though you still can guess it based on their ranked division, but still it is not entirely the same + you cannot play ranked yet :P)

Thanks for the replies, appreciate it. So in saying that it doesn't take into account games played. It seems to be based mostly on your win lose vs the win lose of your opponents to generate a number.

Someone with 1000 games played and a 500 win percent vs fair matchups would have probably used more characters, played different roles more often, earned more IP for various rune / mastery setups , probably also owns more characters due to ip earned. Played on more varied team s and better understands the game.... in regards to gank times, spawn times, builds etc

Not that the current system is broken, but would be nice for it to calculate games played into the equation, as at 100 wins, ( now with ARAM im finding it easier ) I am still not even familiar with how all the characters play, and what counters what etc.

Guess I will just keep playing, and using Mobafire to better understand.

Once again, appreciate the feedback

I believe they actually changed matchmaking a while ago so that the system did take number of games played into account, at least for normals. There was a line in the patch notes some time ago to that effect anyway.

Normal matchmaking attempts to put wins into consideration.

The reason you're matched higher is because you queue up with friends. Matchmaking includes that as a communication advantage, so your MMR gets bumped up a bit.

Thanks. I am just going to assume I have hit a rough patch this last week in terms of matchups. Keep learning, and hopefully owning :)

I use This website to estimate my hidden ELO. You'll need to know the total amount of wins & losses you have for normal games though.

It may be a little off since you haven't played many games, but it'll be in the right ballpark. Keep in mind that the only way you can know of your opponents' MMR is if they have ranked stats on their account. I am like 80% sure that when making teams, the MMR factors in win/loss ratio, experience, attitude, and honor in that order of precedence.

Sorry for the bad luck you've had, bro!

Here's another friendly reminder to NOT play ranked right when you hit level 30. GL~

I hate the fact that normal "Elo" is hidden, seeing how as soon as you reach level 30 you get thrown into the deep end. From what I've noticed from playing, 1300 (for example) elo at level 25 would be completely different to the same elo st level 30.

I'll post more what i think later, I'm not too sure if that hidden Elo should be hidden. But i guess that's what ranked playlists are for, isn't it?
