Hi, Artesenc here, I'm currently level 29 in EUW and looking forward to start rankeding (I know I should wait some time after hiting lvl 30 and I'll try to do it, but I really want to play rankeds, so... I'll do my best) and I've been looking at my champion pool but also at my role pool, what I mean by role pool is the roles where I want to play.
Nowadays I like to play every role and I want to buy champs of every single role, I told this to some more experienced friends and they told me I got it wrong, that I should pick one, two, three at maximum and then focus on these 3 roles, get champs for those roles and improve my skills in those roles and forget about the other 2 (in the current meta).
So my question is really simple: Is it viable to play all roles alike? It's just that I enjoy playing each one of them and I don't want to drop them. Or is a noobish thinking way and I should focus in few roles and completely master them?

And now, two questions that I supposed you've already answered like a milion times:
- Is it better to buy runes for the role and then the champions or to get the champions and then get the runes for their role?
- When and how did you feel that you were ready to start ranked?

Focusing on a few champions across 1/2 roles is most efficient in terms of progressing as fast as you can. If you wanted to a be a virtuoso musician, would you practice seven different instruments sporadically, or just one for 6-7 hours every day? Not a straight up comparison, but the point stands. It depends how far you want to go and how fast. If you're goal is to get diamond and do it fast you are better off focusing, if you just want to have fun and improve/climb at a relaxed pace, playing all roles is perfectly fine. After all, we play this game to have fun. For some, climbing the leagues is the pinnacle of enjoyment, for others it is just playing around.

That said unless you are confident enough in one role to win it pretty much every time, and thus afford the IP loss from queue-dodging, it probably helps if you can branch out. Especially if you main top/mid, which seem to be the most popular positions. Some knowledge of every role is also helpful for skill in general. Learning to jungle has increased my awareness of different junglers ganking paths, times and jungle routes and thus improved my laning.

As for the last question, I'm approaching 200 wins in normals, but I'm not ready to head into ranked. I've a checklist of certain goals before I head into it.

[edit] Ah, now I remember what else I wanted to say! Even if you focus on 1/2 roles, there's nothing to stop you from playing around with other roles in normals. I'm focused on mid, not sure about the other role, but I enjoy pretty much everything. I try to secure mid as often as possible for the practice, but I enjoy the odd game as something else. Plus there are about 15 champions I enjoy in mid, not a practical pool to keep up. I'm using the next month or so to narrow it down to 3-4 champs. I'll occasionally play others in normals, and perhaps swap things around if I feel like I can swap a main.

in normal do what hell role you want XDD ahahaha but in ranked i would suggest you master at most 2 roles and practice 1 extra role (this role should most likely be junglers as most hate to be junglers, but any role that you find in your server to lack)

i am a top and support player, i suck at mid and jungle and i sometimes sub adr if no one wants it. another reason not to master all roles is that switching between them would be really hard and could set you off game.

to answer your other questions;

-what you buy depends on you. since i focused on top and support i just bought the general armor seals and mr glyphs after i bought a couple of champs in those roles. i then got a more specific marks and quints after mastering at least 2 champs of that role. but really it depends on you and how much ip you gain every now and then.

-i started ranked when i have mastered trynda and made him my main. i am in silver 5 (4 but then the stupid decay kicked in) but starting ranks depends on how much confident you are in playing a role :D

ahahaha hope this help ^^
+rep if i helped or if you just happen to like repping ^^

If you bought runes first, you'll never know if your set-up is appropriate for the champ you'd like to play. Champs first, runes later.

When I hit level 30. With only like what, 200 plus wins on normal games, I tried ranked. My elo got reduced as low as twelve hundred because I didn't practice much on normals.

Point being, pick one or two champs, master their mechanics, THEN take on ranked. If you're still losing ranked, keep playing normals.
