Views: 1171 Giving ANIME second chance
|
Hello everybody!
I must say - I never liked anime. All animes I saw looked stupid, childish, had a terrible "story" and there was a plenty of stuff that just got on my nerves every time they used it - and it was like every 2 minutes.
But few years ago I saw about 30 episodes of Full Metal Alchemist and I really liked it. And today - again few years later - I decided to give anime genre second chance. Maybe there is more "normal" anime movies/series, that are worth watching. And since I get a feeling lots of oyu guys like anime, I hope you can suggest me something worthy.
I think it will be for the best if I explain what I hate about anime, so you don't recommend me something like that.
ADULT STORY
I don't want anything childish like Pokemon or Dragon Ball Z. I saw few episodes and was dissapointed. I don't mind fantasy, sci-fi or whatever, but it has to be for adults. I don't mind gore, horror, or dark atmosphere. I wouldn't mind even an action packed story, or artistic one. But the story should be interesting and not childish.
STROBOSCOPIC DISCO PARTICLES
I've seen it in nearly every anime. Character jumps in the air, surroundings changes to a one coloured blurr, with some particles shooting down (so it looks like he is jumping to the 1km height). And it lasts for 5 minutes, while he is either growling, speaking or thinking out loud. It's killing me and the whole atmosphere. Best part is later on, when they split the screen, so they show another character doing the same, but with different colour in the background. Or they change the background colour every time characters clash together during the fight. All in all, I can't watch anime with this nonsense.
10 MINUTES LONG EYE SHOTS
You know what I am talking about - close up on the face, eyes are twitching.. and it just goes on and on. If you go for a piss and come back 5 minutes later, those eyes are still there, on the screen. Oh dear...
NEVERENDING STORY
I heard about naruto having about 1000+ episodes, Full Metal Alchemist about 60 + 2 movies... well... I don't have so much time. I prefer either a movie, or a serie that has no more than 60 episodes (if it's really good, I will be able to push that limit a bit further). But 100 or more episodes - I'm out.
SUPER-MEGA-ULTRA-PENTA SKILLS
I don't mind superhuman abilities and such, but some "skills" and "powers" I saw back then, were just ridiculous. I don't think I can handle it.
TL;DR
So, is there any anime, that will suit me? No above mentioned nonsense, short, with a good story and preferably with full English subtitles (I wouldn't mind to watch it in original language with EN subs)? I am afraid to download just some random series or movies, as I may get scared and dismiss any future attempts to watch this genre. But I have this feeling, there actually may be something, I may like. Any suggestions, my good fans? :)

And I must say, after first 2 episodes, it really looks like something I was looking for.
Btw. I was surprised to see, that characters in there are without those eyes that are covering half of the head, as I saw in all anime before. And the story looks great.
Thanks again and +Rep for you all :)
Personally, I'd like to recommend Eyeshield 21 (HAAHAA!), which is a great sports manga/anime that doesn't contain any supernatural assessories, but is very well character-driven! And damn funny to boot!...But maybe not mature enough for your tastes. You might wanna consider giving it a try though.
Series that fit your criteria and that I personally enjoyed are:
Psycho Pass
Shinsekai Yori
Kara no Kyoukai
Shingeki no Kyojin
All of these are mature, high quality anime that you will definitely enjoy if you keep your mind open.
Neither of them are too kidalike, but it's true, it's been some time since I watched anything of higher quality in the ranks of anime, as I said, other people are probably far more proficient here.
I "ach!" a lot when I watch animes, most purposefully at the cause of being japanese myself and henceforth finding it ridiculous, then again I'm more of a connaisseur of pop culture referencing series, so I'm probably not up to the task of guiding you through the depths of anime watching.
That being said, Soul Eater isn't too shabby (watching more than the first 3 episodes is adviseable), and looking through my mediocore manga section I can detect Fairy Tail, an alrighty manga/anime, keeping in mind that it is implied for sexually driven teenagers and sadly confers a lot of unnececarry fanservice.
Addendum: That's racist. Oh and ask our beloved friend cyberskull, I'm assured he has a lot of adequate anime series to confer.
Tbh, the anime that you describe are exactly the animes this guy does not want to see :P

I definately recommend the first 3, as far as I understand your taste :P
I think you should read this discussion :)
I really like Death Note myself
