I've been looking around a good bit since seeing an AP Kog'Maw in a game the other day just absolutely destroying my team from a screen away, doesn't seem like it's very popular. Is AP Kog'Maw actually viable - or is it just something to mess around with in a game every now and then?

AP Kog'Maw is viable. Is it as viable as AD Kog'Maw, I don't know about that. Right now, though, it's just that Kog'Maw himself isn't viable. With the popular adcs being Jinx, Lucian, and Sivir, who are strong in the early game and late game, while Kog'Maw is really only a threat when he's got most of his items done. As an AP, the popular mids have good harass, and a strong early game, as well as some mobility, like LeBlanc and Ziggs, which Kog'Maw lacks.

Kog'Maw is literally a walking bag of spit, where one little poke will cause it to explode. Once late game arrives, though, he turns into a deadly bag of spit, where you won't live long enough to cause him to pop. He's just not strong in the current meta.

I personally main Kog'Maw, AD initially then have been using him mainly as AP. He is very viable either way, and I've even been using him a lot as AP bot lane with a support. Going ap koggles both mid lane and bot lane has its weaknesses, mobility and ganking power for the former lane and not as strong as dragon killing potential if you run him ap bot lane. There's also the fact that he has no hard CC that will help you stop champions who decide to jump on you so early game, it is pretty difficult (next to impossible mid lane against a good LeBlanc, Kassadin and Fizz.

As long as you recognize what his weaknesses are and though and safely play around it, you're generally good to go.
Check out my guide. AP Kog all the way!
