@ iamjustdrew the best counterplay to leona, is one , simple, really easy actually, ban her! XD thats the only counterplay to leona i have figured out, and if you main leona the best way to win vs morgana is just, ban her too!

Jovy (950) | December 4, 2020 6:10am
best counterplay is pick her first :D

What do you think is currently the best counterplay to Leona? I main her and I'm curious as to what your opinion is. I feel like most matchups lean in her favor and the most annoying matchup I've currently had is Morgana, because of her shield. Even then, I can just cc whoever isn't shielded.

Jovy (950) | December 4, 2020 6:09am
Morgana is a good choice but a good Leona will hold her Q until Morgana uses the shield. Janna and Lulu were the traditional counterpicks to Leona throughout the past few years, but Leona is in a really good spot right now so the match-ups are a little more difficult than they used to be. I would always go for Morgana or Lulu though.

Lulu is very squishy but she has far more range than Leona so you should try to poke her down in the early levels, while staying at a safe distance from Zenith Blade (which is when it's on cooldown, or just be ready to dodge). When she does go in, you can polymorph (W) her to stop her from perma CC-ing your marksman, or you can hold polymorph for Leona's marksman, which is also very effective. Leona can go in and stun them, but a lot of the damage is supposed to come from her marksman, and polymorph stops that.

The icons for Eclipse are replaced with the item instead of the skill, S11 confused the system

I really like the guide, the only thing that's confusing me is that the items at the beginning of the guide and the items in the itemization section are different. Could you please fix that, as I don't know which items to go with. Other than that, it's a really great guide that has helped me a lot.

Thanks for the catch, I didn't notice that Gargoyle's was missing from the guide. The build in the cheat sheet is currently the one to follow, but I'll update the guide later today! That being said, new items are coming out very soon x)

Hi,
your guide is pretty good but I want to ask something strange. Recently, I have seen in a guide Black Cleaver on Bard. I am wondering If it can be a thing on Leona too. It provides her with a lot of cdr, hp and some damage. Also, it makes her more mobile (with the Phage) and it reduces enemy's armor so your ad teammates can finish them of easier.
Have a nice day!

Jovy (950) | October 30, 2020 11:50am
The Black Cleaver reduces enemy armour only when you physical damage to them, and Leona deals physical damage only with her auto-attacks; so she's not good at applying it at all. Redemption, Locket of the Iron Solari, Zeke's, Knight's Vow are all items that are far more beneficial for her team than The Black Cleaver; and they give her nicer stats; on a support salary too.

  • When you're looking for synergy, pick any ADC that does burst damage or is just super aggressive. I like MF, Draven, Twitch, etc. ADC who rely on their range for poke like Ashe and Caitlyn have less synergy with Leona.

  • Basically in the early game you can keep track of what spells, both summoner spells but also abilities, an enemy has used. Say you're playing against Thresh/Blitz, you would know their hooks have a cooldown of about 20 seconds, so after they use it, you have a good window to engage onto the enemy ADC without having to worry about a counterengage from them.

So essentially you gotta know the champions your enemy is playing and understand your win conditions against each of them; this all comes with a lot of practice. Sometimes you're simply outmatched, Leona may struggle a lot against Lulu and other poke supports.

In short, some things to watch out for: the enemy's abilities' cooldown, your jungler (is hear nearby, can he gank), the enemy's summoner spells, the enemy's health and mana (lower better), the enemy jungler/mid lane position (if you see the enemy jg top, he can't gank bot lane if you engage).

So considering how all of her damaging skills stack with AP, wouldn't it be better to go with relic shield as her support item?

As going for the full tank build you're really not AA-ing the enemy that much because of the slow attack speed.
Sorry if anything.

Jovy (950) | September 7, 2020 1:01am
You actually will do more damage simply by auto-attacking because melee champions tend to have good base AD. As a melee support it's very important to utilise your autos early game when they deal the most damage. Anytime you Q, you are applying AA damage. When you E someone, you're in AA range.

If you went full AP, you would still not do a lot of damage with Leona because her AP scalings are very bad. For Q it's 30% and for E it's 40%. Her ult scales well with AP (80%) but you can't rely on your ultimate do deal all your damage for you, and that's not what her ultimate is for anyhow. Suppose you go full AP, your Q and E will be slightly stronger and your ultimate might deal a lot of damage if it hits someone.

However, that's when you go full AP. The 10 AP from Targon's Buckler will effectively do nothing to increase her damage.

Thanks for answering :) I've started playing LoL recently because of a friend, after 4k hours on Dota 2 so its tons of fun thinkering how everything works out.

Any advices for the secondary rune? some matches i feel like cookies and tonic just doesnt pack the punch, specially when going solo (90% of the time being i'm a solo player) and my carry is very slow to start attacking whenever i engage the enemy.

Hello Jovy! Here is the supportive comment you ordered!

First of all, I love Leona. She's one of my favorite supports. Tanky, a lot of CC, great engage... Love her. This high-quality guide is exactly what Leona deserves! UwU

I like the visuals here, especially because the eclipse skins are gorgeous (I have solar eclipse from a chest :D). It's definitely not over the top either, which makes it pleasant and easy to read.

At the same time the guide is really informative, offering every aspiring Leona (myself some months ago included) everything they need to know in order to succeed. I only have one remark: the description of Shurelya's Battlesong is outdated. :p

Overall, fantastic guide! Keep up the good work (this counts for all your guides of course)!

(This comment is free of charge, but I do always accept donations in the form of pet pictures.) ;)

Thank you for the lovely comment Silver and good catch on the Shurelya's, it has been fixed :) Leona is also one of my favourites (defo favourite tank support at least if we don't count Thresh) and Solar/Lunar Eclipse are just some of the nicest skins in the game I think :)

Some cat tax for you <3

Hi, thanks for this guide! Only one question, I have seen runing Inspiration second with perfect timing or the free boots rune instead of biscuit delivery, could you explain why do you like the last one? I have also seen runing Precision with Triumph and tenacity, and I am driving crazy figuring out which ones should I use. Thanks a lot, you answer would help me a lot :).

Jovy (950) | March 16, 2020 12:21pm
hey HAISSVAT! :)
There are a lot of ways you could go with your secondary setup, so I think the best thing you could do is try out a few setups and see what you prefer.

Players who go for inspiration go cookies, stopwatch, hextech flash, dematerializer, cosmic insight etc. Personally I like stopwatch because it can help you out in a tight spot and make diving safer + plus you buy Gargoyle's later out of it. Cookies help me stay healthy so I can keep engaging. But the other runes have their merits which other players may find suit their playstyles more.

In the precision tree, I would opt for tenacity for sure as well as presence of mind, which helps me stay in a fight longer. Leona is good in longer skirmishes because her Q has a quite short cooldown so getting health and mana after takedowns compliments her natural ability to fight extendedly.

Hello, is stoneplate an core item? If so then why?
1
Jovy (950) | March 14, 2020 8:10am
it's a really good item for tank supports right now, Leona likes it for the same reason as any tank; it makes her very tanky and is very useful in teamfights. As a melee engaging support, you will be in a position to pop the active very often.
