These lectures are very helpful. Though they're long and you should ignore nearly every comment about the champions mentioned (they're fairly outdated), they make things clear about what a role should and shouldn't be doing.

When it comes to Support I tend to find one simple word sums it up - PATIENCE
You got to be patent enough to realize that your teams time will come, at some point your opponent will step forward too far and you have to be ready to pounce with your ADC but the only way that will happen is if you allow them to make the move - If you are too forceful you could end up making the one step too far and be caught yourself.
You also have to have faith in your ADC that if you have to disappear for a brief moment that they can indeed hold out long enough to get what you need to do done whether its warding, assisting in a sudden fight in the jungle or just simply buying your next major item.
Finally one of the most controversial things I will say is you are not meant to be the "Hero" as the support - What I mean is if your ADC or another member of the team as gone in too far and is caught and you can't do anything about it then DON'T simple as that - I have seen teams fall because the Support tried to do the Gallant thing and save his or her team mate and in most cases its turn what would be a meaningless single kill for one team into a ACE in the blink of an eye.
