GIMP is good...it's not quite as good as photoshop, but it's also free which nearly makes up for it.

1. Start out by opening your chosen render.
2. Now we're going to add a new layer to it.
3. Now we need to move the layer so it is underneath the render.
4. Now we're going to add a colored background, I like to use a cloud effect called PLASMA.
Because I prefer a smoother color transition, I lower the turbulence on the plasma. You can leave it as it is if you like.

5. Now you hit "OK" and it will apply the plasma as a background.
It will look something like this (yea, yea, yea I shouldn't have changed the plasma retroactively, I know...)
6. Now you need to add another layer on top of the plasma layer. This is so you can fade the background texture if you choose.
7. Choose your brush and size it accordingly. Now place the brush and click to apply it to the new layer. You can change the whole mood of a sig by changing the brush so feel free to play around with it.
8. Fade the texture layer if you choose, I left it alone on this sig because I liked the unfaded effect.
9. Now add another layer to the image. You'll need to move this layer to the top of the image so it overlaps both the render and the background.
10. Choose a brush that will add the effect you want, and pick a color that fits the color scheme.
I chose a splatter brush.
Here's how it looked after I placed the brush.
11. Now you may want to fade the brush, there are several ways to do this, I chose the overlay fade.
12. Now we're gonna add text, this part is annoying because a box will pop up every time you try to move or change anything about the text.
13. You can leave the font as is but I prefer to change it.
14. Now for some kind of fading. I dodged the text, but you could do something else with it if you prefer.
15. Now move the text and crop it so it is the right proportions.
These last steps are optional, because you may not feel the need to finish your sig in another program the way I do.
16. Upload the sig into Picnik, click on the edit tab and click resize. Make sure keep proportions is checked or your sig will be stretched oddly and look totally wrong. I also like to use the percentages option but you don't have to.
17. Now add a vignette border, this will look more finished than a plain edge.
18. Now you can save the sig or add a few more of the effects from picnik if you wish.
Now you have a finished sig!
