Depends on the "rage level"
Normally I try to calm them down with 1 or 2 sentences (you don't want to distract yourself for too long), with no hate, or irony intended.
If they continue or start raing at me, I say something to shut them up (usually "nobody cares" or "so play better than him" "shut it and play" and so on)
Third stage is hiting the MUTE button and not giving a flying toast about them anymore.

I thank myself for this awesome sig!!!
In my opinion always try to go the diplomatic approach if your trying to win.
I don't really play normals seriously, so I generally resort to talking ****, but what brought me up from Bronze to Diamond was really a change in my attitude towards others.
If your trying to win and some guy is being a ****, you should just not respond or just ignore him. The ignore function can be found by pressing tab and clicking on the message box icon on the same row as their name.
Generally I just don't respond, but I don't ignore him either, in the event that he might have some important stuff to tell us such as MIAs or tips that might benefit the team (however small that chance is).
If things get out of hand between the flamer in question and another person, just tell them to chill out and some motivational stuff like "lets win this, ok?" etc.

Chance of rage kid telling something important or even calling ss, is 1%. I had the same attitude, I told them "ok, muted" and did not mute them for the same reason as you wrote... but it only affected my gameplay in negative way. I had to read all that sheit and it was distracting me too much. Nowadays, if I can't calm them down or make them cooperate, I mute them asap.
But I agree with motivational stuff, it helps lots of time.
