I'd say try playing Normal Draft Pick mode. And try it A LOT.
Watch streams, which can give you ideas on the mentality of the game, and furthermore: You should have full rune-pages before trying anything ranked. It'll only be a disadvantage to face opponents with full runepages.
Also: Read guides on the champions you like, and determine whether they are viable for ranked or not. If not, find new champs to play - for ranked at least. You want to play it safe the first games, and hope to God that your teammates won't feed. If you feed, then it's your teammates I would feel sorry for, though.
You have to judge yourself, and decide whether or not you are ready for ranked play or not.

I'd say 500 wins is a good benchmark for when ppl start getting good at the game (usually).
I like to play some ranked games, if I feel like I'm not doing well enough I take a break and play normals to get better, then try again!
My #1 tip is quit after a loss, you will just keep losing. I'm serious.

I've seen people with around 250 wins play better than an 1800. ;p

Thanks to The Nameless Bard and Vavena for the sigs!
