GP5 is just a means to an end. You're not
supposed to just sit comfortably for the whole
duration of the game with GP5's are you? If so,
that could explain why you die easily and/or let
your team down.
A good reason for making GP5 items build into items
like the reverie, is because everyone knows (if they've tried)
how difficult it is to get gold, if you're playing a tank or
support. Thus, it provides a way for support/tanks etc. to
gain some utility, in order to help their team. So, after
you've run around with your GP5 items and gotten enough
gold, you could opt for building a reverie. This will provide
you with a very useful active that is useful in many situations.
On top of that, you also get a number of other stats that boost
your usefulness even further, such as the CDR (Cool-Down-Reduction).
Thus, even though you don't farm (at least you shouldn't) like a carry,
or get kills, you will still be able to build some items that benefit you
and your team.

From another side as a support player, shurelya is a must, all the other "upgrades" are not you usually just keep the Kage and Hog and make an aegis, zeke's, Will of the Ancient, glacial shroud and well most of your money is for wards and oracle.
Most of the time you build will pretty much be, Shurelya + Boots + HoG + Kage's + Wards + A last aura item + Oracle somewhere in that. (some gp10 can be avoided if you and your partner are doing awesome in lane)

That's why you wait on your Gp10 till 30~ minutes. Generally upgrading to Shurelya's and/or Randuin's should begin after getting Aegis of the Legion and Tier 2 boots.

You can farm later in the game. It's just that
carries and others, need the farm more than you
do, as support. Late game, if minions are pushing
your tower, it can be okay to farm. Of course if
someone else needs it, you give it to them usually.
And depending on your masteries, you can get quite
a nice amount of gold from assists. On top of that,
if the other team is warding and you don't die often
or at all, you can also farm some gold by destroying
their wards. Not to at all mention that your team ought
to take dragon and baron too. Whenever you kill a tower,

rack it in. Since I start out with what's equivalent to
a slightly better GP5 item. Plus I get the extra gold
from my masteries ^^. But that's just how I play.
