I'm having a real blast with Awesomenauts and I'm getting pretty decent at the game. So far I've devised a few builds for 'Nauts I like.

Many Nauts have upgrades that give the same stat, but they differ in that one of them are more expensive but compensates for that by being more cost effective.
Froggy G has 2 of those just on his Splash Dash skill. Buying Golden Watch twice give the same stats as Clock Necklace, but also costs 50solar more(240 vs 190). In most cases it's worth grabbing the skill that is more expensive, but in some cases like for Raelynn with her sniper shot (1.5upgrades cost 262.5, the expensive one costs 260) it's not worth it. All you need to do is some simple math.

Froggy G

Hit n' run build:
Ice Cubes, Clock Necklace, Hydro Smash.
Turbo Tape, Bio Fuel Cells, Right Back At Ya! or Can't Touch This.
Swirling Octopus Cartridges, Mutant Worms, Thorn Fish or Piranha Cartridges.
Space Air Max, Power Pills, Med-i'-Can or Piggybank.

Start out with Splash Dash and Power Pills. Then get Swirling Octopus Cartridges and Space Air Max.

Nuke build:
Ice Cubes, Hammer Pants, Hydro Smash.
Boom Box, Twister Tweeters, Right Back At Ya!.
Mutant Worms, Thorn Fish, Piranha Cartridges or Swirling Octopus Cartridges.
Power Pills and 2 of these 3-> Power Pills Light, Space Air Max, Piggybank.

Lonestar

Pushing build:
An Extra Stick, Rubber Sleeve, Transfusion Grenade.
Cattle Rebooter, Bull Charger, Mature Ribbit Snail Slime.
Eagle Bullets, Crystal Eagle Bullets, Booming Bullets.
Power Pills and 2 of these 3-> Power Pills Turbo, Rocket Boots, Piggybank.

Start out with Dynamite Throw and Power Pills. Spam Dynamite all the time to kill robots and harass. Get the lifesteal upgrade on your Dynamite as soon as you can. Get the Bull Charger upgrade soon.

Derpl

Nyan build:
Strengthened Trap, Super-powered Grid, Lead Casing or Empowered Grid or Hydrocollision Lava Lamp.
Sniper Bullets, Solid Fist Bullets, Hollow Point Bullets.
Longcat, CAT Package, Bat Catsuit.
Power Pills, Piggybank, Med-i'-can.

Start with Siege Mode, Piggy Bank, Power Pills and 2 points in Med-i'-can. Buy one point of Longcat early. Leave Hollow Point Bullets for last and get the trap longevity upgrade sometime during midgame.

Do post your builds with some reasoning behind them if you'd like.

Here's what you're doing wrong with froggy G :

Hammer pants is a godlike item on froggy, it makes his early game extremely brutal, replace hydro smash or clock with it.
The attack damage is beter than attack sped on tornado.
Can't touch this is a good upgrade, but against derpls, cocos or lonestars you can wreck face with Right back at ya, it's also godly to push turrets without droids around.
That locked upgrade for level 76 you got, it'S thornfish, it's the best autoattack upgrade in the whole game, get it with attack speed and damage.

You shouldn't make a guide without testing all the upgrades, because the last unlocked upgrades that you have on no 'naut are almost all extremely good.

Hammer Pants are pretty good, but it's harder to land (easier for enemies to avoid) a "ground slam" and they're overall less reliable than a direct increase in damage. I'm all for reliability.

There is no attack speed on the Tornado. That's a movement speed upgrade.. And it's pretty damn good at that price.
This builds were made before the HUGE buff to the damage upgrade. The damage upgrade used to suck really ****ing hard. After the buff I would surely consider picking it up, but the price is still considerably higher than that of the movement speed upgrade.

Is Right Back at Ya is 'godly' against turrets? How so? Your spin lasts for a measly 1.6seconds. That's maybe enough to take a small chunk of the HP away.
Can't Touch This seems to be the skill that brings the most utility to the table from what I can see.

I have since then reached max level, leveled up in prestige and am now sitting on level 20. So it will be a while before I have it again.
But is it that good? The attack speed upgrade is pretty damn mandatory in my opinion (it's so incredibly OP it's not even funny) and the range upgrade is really damn strong (it's a ******* 60% range increase for 145solar). I'm not completely sure, but won't the damage upgrade give you more damage than the split-shot?

That's not true.
Some of them are good, but most certainly not all.

Not that many are playing it here (as far as I know), sadly.
It's a great game.

Yeah I failed my stuff, but damage is much better than movement speed. The first upgrade wasn't too good but the second one was. WHat it did was boost both attack speed and damage form the tornado, but the attack speed wasn't documented on the upgrade's text. It gave quite a good amount of damage, it was + 4 damage per tick AND and extra tick at full level. The change isn't actually a buff, it's a rectification to remove the extra tick and make tornado do the same amount of damage all in all without the attack speed modification. They just didn't add that explaination in the patch notes.
The tornado isn't about good price, even if speed is useful, tornado is a burst ability. Froggy already has the best escape ability in the whole game in the form of his stunning, long range, invincible dash. You want to cramp up as much damage as you can by getting Tweeters and Damage, RBAY is to allow you to use it in the middle of clusters of enemies while making it's damage even higher.

Getting rid of range is what you do on fish blaster. Thornfish is much better than range. Range is good in a few situations but the DPS with TF is ridiculous.

The last upgrades aren't the best? Have a look :

Froggy : RBAY and Thornfish
Lonestar : Damage over time, Slow on bull
Clunk : Universal charger and Salvo Value Pack
Skolldir : Oily spray (WHY THE HELL ISN'T IT IN YOUR BUILD? BEST UPGRADE IN THE WHOLE GAME!) and Height on earthquake
Derpl : Bat Cat suit (Best derpl upgrade in his whole page)

As you can see, all these upgrade are the last of the row and they're arguably the best upgrades for each character you can get.

Also, poking turrets without droids with 0 retaliation is impossible as froggy, rbay brings you from the ***** of pushing awesomenauts to the master of said awesomenauts.

Yeah I failed my stuff, but damage is much better than movement speed.

You're comparing 2 very different stats. A better comparison would be duration vs damage:
The overall damage you gain through Bio Fuel Cells is a lot higher than what you get from Boom Box. I believe it's one tick per 0.4sec. That means that Bio Fuel Cells increase the total damage by 64, while B-Box only increases it by 32.
It is obviously favorable to get the damage quicker, but the increase in duration does not only give double the total damage, but it also increases the amount of time you have a movement speed boost or the time you have a shield or the time you reflect bullets.
All those things paired with the fact that Bio Fuel Cells cost considerably less than B-Box is why I like the BFC more. I may even go as far as saying that the duration is usually better (for my playstyle at the very least), but I will never claim that the duration upgrade always is better than the damage upgrade. That would be silly.

If you wanna compare utility you should compare reflecing bullets or the shield to the movement speed bonus.

I would love some proof of this claim.

All abilities are about what they give you for the price you pay. Your claim is false.

The ***** of pushing turrets would be Coco.
Froggy is very much average at it.
"rbay" does bring some nice utility, but it's not like you can take huge chunks of HP from towers. It's good, but I like the shield better (it's not like you can counterpick Derpls and such..).
Quoted:

It's also really ****ing expensive. Considering that the range upgrade costs LESS THAN HALF as much solar you really can't claim that Thornfish is clearly superior.

The amount of blanket-statements you're making is heavily decreasing the credibility of your arguments. I would recommend stopping that.

I'm just gonna prove you wrong in one simple example with Clunk.
The Salvo Pack gives an average of 6 damage extra per attack. The Juggernaut gives an average of 3 damage extra per attack.
You pay 66.667 per point of damage with the Salvo Pack. You pay 53.333 per point of damage with the Juggernaut. The Juggernaut is 25% more cost effective than the Salvo Pack. The choice is not in any way clear.
Quoted:
(WHY THE HELL ISN'T [Oily Spray] IN YOUR BUILD? BEST UPGRADE IN THE WHOLE GAME!)

I don't have that much experience with Skolldir and have yet to try it out. It does seem pretty good, even with the nerf.
"I saw [Twilight: Eclipse] in theaters with a girl I was dating at the time. I spent more time staring at my toes and wiggling them than I did watching this abomination. When Edward proposed to Blank Face, I finally looked up with a revelation.
I blurted out loud, in a dead silent theater full of teenage girls on opening night "Wait a minute, Edward has no blood flow. How does he get an erection?" I heard several men laughing, and had several girls turn and stare at me.

I did not get laid that night." - Berengier817

I'm having a blast with Awesomenauts aswell, but i've found that the best way to play any of the champs is indeed related to the lvl you are. I enjoy playing Derpl a lot as a turret, focussing on a stunning machinegun and long range. However once i'd get higher lvl it might be more interesting to indeed go catbuild. Without the damage upgrade on the cats it's simply not worth it though.

I haven't really sat down to analyse each and every skill-up for every champ, but it might be that some lower stat upgrades are less solar-effecient but will give you more stats in the longrun because they might have more upgrades. (i.e. 5x +4 damage for 200 solar each vs 3x 6 damage for 250 solar)

I'm like lvl 42, and i only just found out that apparently once you hit max lvl (85 something) that you have the choice to get a merrit badge and start back at lvl 1. Don't really see the point in that. I'd be up for queueing together sometime ^^
