Do you like the idea of a phone worth keeping?

It's all a money issue in the end. The companys won't agree to it because producing "breakable" phones is more profitable for them. If the phone never breaks, because you can easily fix it, then why should people buy new phones? So it makes no sense for the companies to produce them cuz they are rather interested in making profit and selling as much as they can, instead of being interested in the actual quality.

Laptops are been build to break after about 2 years. Heat sensitive parts are build right next to hot parts just so they will break. It can b easily avoided, but they don't want to do so, cuz it would last too long then. Easy as that. Getting a laptop which is not build like this but actually is build to last for quite some time, has it's price. Very high price. Same will go for phones.

Sorry, dearie. But you're just flat out wrong here.
It is in fact a money issue in the end, but the issue is not that the companies want to make intentionally fragile electronics so that they can sell more of them when they break. The issue is that it will cost a lot more to manufacture a modular phone, like the one this campaign seeks to do.

I've made some rather long-winded comments on this earlier in the thread, but let me just try to summarize it a little for you:
"A modular set of electronics can impossibly be smaller, lighter and cheaper than a fixed set. That is just the reality of the situation."
"Just look at consumer electronics: they have less modularity the smaller they are. That's a clear indication of something in my opinion."

If you'd like to get a bit more detail I suggest that you go read the rest of the thread.

It was actually in some news here that actually building heat sensitive parts further away from heating up parts wouldn't be such a big deal. It's a matter of re-araging and actually wouldn't be that expensive. They just don't want to do so.

In the end it's up to you to decide if you want to pay extra from the beginning, to have smth that lasts for more then 2 years, or if you want to replace your device all 2 years.

As far as it goes for phones, ours all are still alive aswell except 2. One of them fell into water and didn't really recover from that, and the other just stoped working one day. which was rather weird...

I'd like some more info on that.
What company was doing so?
What products were they making?
What news site, paper or TV channel reported it?
How did they come to those conclusions?
Which parts where sensitive to the heat?

Please answer as many of those as you can or I will completely disregard your statement.

Well, it's unclear as to what you're referring to here, but if it's cheap **** that breaks easily I can't do anything other than agree. If you're referring to the 'Phonebloks' on the other hand you're clearly not realizing the magnitude of the problems with the idea..

Will try to look up some info when I'll have the time (means probably this weekend).

Was refering to the industry at this moment, not to Phone Bloks. Because this is how it seems to be. Nearly everyone gets a new Phone/Laptop all two years ( at least it's what i see from people around me).

Hahaha, Motorola(Google owned) has apparently been working on a concept like this for over a year.

Looks far more realistic than the Phonebloks campaign. And sure as hell: these phones are gonna be larger, heavier and more expensive than normal phones. The pictures alone should be obvious hints of the first two at the very least.

I want a phone that'll last me a long time. My issue is that my phones tend to derp. I'm not interested in smart phones, but all the "free" phones my provider offers at the end of each contract are data-plan-required phones, which really pisses me off.

So yeah, I like this idea of a customizable phone. I'd probably go for a bigger speaker, bigger battery, and memory storage for texts. Wouldn't even bother with the camera. Oh, and vibrator and charger block, obv. I don't really use any other features. If it's a phone that'll last a day and I can understand the people speaking to me through it, it's a good phone to me.

So you're one of those people that actually think they get their phones for free on contract XD

didn't really look through it clearly but here are my 2c:

i highly doubt this thing will become successful main reason being they're targeting a relatively smaller audience
hardware customization for phones just doesn't seem to attract as much people. most people prefer a packaged phone. It really only targets a limited amount of people. Do note that phones are vastly different from versatile devices like desktops or cars as the whole purpose of phones are to cram a vast amount of tools in a small device.

the only benefit i see from the phone would be easier reparation, but then I'm pretty sure most people don't break their phones as often. there are guarantees as well for reparations within a certain time frame. People that I know around me break their phones at most two or three times per year. There's no point in buying an aesthetically unpleasing phone with probably a worse weight and size that has one small feature

moreover people often replace their phones in a year / 2 years mostly due to the quick advancement in technology, this new product will soon be outdated as well, ruining the main purpose of the phone - to be long lasting. Unless the phone can somehow "update itself" without having to buy extra components I don't think it will be as successful.

Also, I'm unsure about software compatibility. I think they'd need a specific versatile operating system and with current technology I'm not sure how everything's gonna fit in a small device.

I may be wrong, but as of now I don't think this will be a huge success. I feel this would be much more suitable for larger tablets or for future devices, when people actually have the material and technology to create long lasting devices.

Yeah, the problems with this concept are pretty much: weight, size and cost(as I've stated many times in this thread). All of those will be worse with a modular phone.
It's of course possible they could make an attractive product even with those problems, but it is considerably less likely.
