As for Avatar... Have you been watching The Legend of Korra? It's terrible. Nick doesn't have Avatar, it had Avatar.
And as for your brother... Most children simply don't have a good frame of reference to tell whether or not something is actually good. A lot of things made for children seem to abuse that fact, which is why, to us older folk, it's clear that some things that children enjoy aren't actually good.

I used to like Drake and Josh & Spongebob on Nick, and Codename Kids Next Door.
I don't watch TV anymore. We cancelled our plan and it's we only use our tv for footy on friday night and movies on sundays.
Everything else just makes me cringe. The shows that are supposed to be "humorous" are full of lame, corny jokes that I'd expect a 7 year old to be making in the yard.

Everything Nick has that is any good is Spongebob and Avatar, the rest of their shows are utter waste. Especially the GarbageTV that is somehow being received well. The best thing I found on the show was this short joke that was supposed to be funny but turned out to be masturbation material:
