I wouldn't say that he's the best tank, nor the worst. I suppose that you could rush RoA and then go tank. With his high AP ratios and basedamage you should be somewhat dangerous for some time. His ult is on fairly low cd with Frozen heart or other CDR items, so I guess it's good enough for disruption. His W makes him take less damage which is great too. His AS debuff on his Q isn't weak either.
But.. Cho' is just as viable I'd say. Silence and a (somewhat reliable) knockup. And of course ****loads of true damage, even without lots of AP. Meh..

Like a week or two ago, I played with Kramer112 (now Gragas112, a very well-known Grag player) and he jungle/top laned Gragas and it actually did pretty well. Gragas seems like a pretty tanky champion so I guess I can see it work out, it's just really awkward at times. I still prefer him as AP though but tank Grag can work, especially with RoA.

Before they completly ****ed up Gragas while Locket was in the game, he was viable as tanky AD. But then, they first nerfed him totally down and then removed Locket, making him like eve atm or Garen after the limitation of sunfire cape. He got some buffs but he still isn't back to his old form, riot did a very bad job at him.

^ Except he's still super strong and viable and before was insanely OP :P

well, c'mon. if you build the common tank build on gragas like warmog, fon, tm. etc etc. wont that render his skills worthless?
umm, correct me if I'm wrong. but ap-related tanky item which is worth buying on him is rylai, or maybe RoA also.
unlike other tanks, all his skills rely on ap, considering that they are just burst damage(1st and ult).
