His Passive is dealt by how much damage he takes, so Armor and MR do help your shield a little. Though grabbing a Thornmail by far is one of the best items to get him, then just build either a Randuin, Sunfire, or GA at that point.

His passive is technically a 10% Effective HP boost ((HP * 1.1) / ARmod = (HP / ARmod) * 1.1), so there's no special way to build specifically around it.
In other words, just build him for the most possible amount of effective HP, just as you would for any tank. (Keep in mind there's a difference between physical effective HP and magical effective HP)
