He's good, and his ganks are scary. I wouldn't say that he's lost popularity though.
The only flaw that i see with maokai is that he's susceptible to being counterjungled pretty easily. If he has indeed lost popularity, it's probably because the junglers who like him have been getting sick of being counterjungled by xin, vi, and j4. Just a guess though

I use him all the time and I see him just as frequently as I used to (which is less than other junglers sadly). Dunno what question is being asked here.

I play him regularly with the build I created. He's incredible. He has some counter jungling weakness very early on, but if you're careful and are able to avoid it, you can't really lose.
