Why so many yasuos?

I don't play frequently LoL which is why I was inactive for a month. The last two days I decided to play and ended up seeing yasuo mid in most of my games. Additionally, I looked up his statistics in Lolking and he has around 30% pick rate and more on other servers.
Now, has he always been this popular and I was only oblivious or did some changes influence him? And while we're at it some good counters, so laning phase isn't as annoying as it is right now against him.

There was no real change but many of the popular mid laners at the moment are decent or favorable matchups for so he is being played more often.

right now in the current meta alot more champs in the mid lane are starting to become ad champs and overall just assassins. Yasuo is a late game carry he needs to cs early and get into the late game while other assassins and ad champs can scale easily early game and in mid game a good example of this is pantheon he has huge damage and power spikes early and by the point of the game where yasuo can do something it's usually already over now that the tank meta is gone games don't last as long as they do :3
